4. Death Penalty is against our traditions?
Abraham ,   Azor   (09.16.08)
I don't think. Maybe Mr. Carmel could be right about the difference between cases, but the law in Israel must be more strong for violence episodes and of course, the death penalty must be included in order to persuade all this violent people. We have gangs, mafia, school violence, child's abusers, recently neonazis but there's one thing that you can't see walking in Tel-Aviv: the classic policeman who can make the difference between civilization or jungle.
5. Terrorists with blood on their hands should be sentence ...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (09.16.08)
Terrorists with blood on their hands should be sentence to death. Israel's repeated willingness to release terrorists for live and dead hostages makes clear the need to implement the death penalty against terrorist murderers. The criminal code permits the death penalty to be used in cases of treason, murder, crimes against humanity, genocide and crimes against the Jewish people. The problem is not the laws on the books; the problem is the state prosecution's refusal to use them. Regardless of the nature of their crimes, the State Attorney's Office refuses to request that judges sentence terrorists to death. More at : http://xrl.us/kj6sj
6. Say no to death penalty
Leon Rogson ,   Los Angeles, CA, USA   (09.16.08)
Say yes. The mechanism we currently have, leave our innocent civilians as targets for abduction and barganing. Give us our murderers and we will return your innocents. If we had imposed the death penalty on Qantar we would have never had to trade him for bodies. It is also clear that the reason for the attack on our soldires would have been less. There is too much nonsens and Political Correctness on the death penalty. The penalty is condoned by our religion, and it has a place in our jurisprudence. Leon
7. Death Sentence
Shlomo ,   Israel   (09.16.08)
I'm with you 100% numbers 3 & 5. Can you only guess how many people would willingly carry out a death sentence against this ronny ron, kuntar, nasralla, achmadinajad, haniya, abbas, and all the other murderers and preachers of murder.
8. Say no to death penalty... SO WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS...?
Simha ,   Toronto, CAnada   (09.16.08)
SO.... DEAR FRIENDS: Because there is nothing for a deterrence... THE CRIMINALS GET WHAT THEY WANT; as follows: 1. COMMIT THE CRIME 2. MAKE IT TO THE NEWS WORLDWIDE.... 3. THE PREDATOR KNOWS HE WILL BE OUT OF JAIL.. AFTER A LONG/SHORT HOLIDAY (being looked after in the jail system. With complete support) 4. WHEN OUT OF JAIL.. Guess what... JUST START ALL OVER AGAIN... WHAT HAPPEN WITH STONING OUTSIDE THE CITY....! THAT WILL MAKE IT TO THE NEWS !! .... Your truly, An OLD FASHION SAILOR..
9. How about forced organ donations?
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.16.08)
Make the killers give up their life to save others in need. There's too many wicked people on this planet. Get rid of them!
10. #4 - Abraham, Check out the Halakhot regarding...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (09.16.08)
Check out the Halakhot regarding capital cases and what was necessary for a sentence of death to be handed down. Halakha and its history with the death penalty might surprise you. Adin Steinsaltz's "The Essential Talmud" is a great place to start...
11. Child killers, prime minister killers....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (09.16.08)
and anybody-else killers need to be put to death. Period.
12. Completely wrong...
Gabriel ,   Toronto   (09.17.08)
The Death Penalty goes against, not only Jewish tradition, but more importantly, against the way modern Democratic countries work. It's a barbaric custom belonging to a bygone era born out of hatred rather than justice. Here are some Judaic principals for the religious of you. According to the Talmud, in order to have a death penalty, there had to be two witnesses to the crime who warn the murderer before he kills. Rabbi Eliezer Ben Azariah said... "a Sanhedrin that effects an execution once in seventy years is considered a bloody Sanhedrin" Rabbi Tarfon and Rabbi Akiva said "If we were members of Sanhedrin, nobody would ever be put to death" Then, in 70 B.C.E, the Rabbis abolished the death penalty completely.
13. Lunacy and insanity
USA   (09.17.08)
These are the words to describe Israel's crime and punishment. You allow terrorist and child killers go free in exchange for dead bodies.
14. Author is wrong. A murder is not always a murder
Steve ,   Fla.   (09.17.08)
There are indeed differing kinds and degrees of murder and killing. Some kill in self-defense. How can the author compare Samir Kuntar's brutal slaying of a Jewish child -- crushing her skull on a rock on the beach -- to an accidental killing or one in self-defense? Mr. Carmel says, "A murder is always a murder?" The fact that Israel has no death penalty for brutal murderers like Samir Kuntar makes a mockery of justice in Israel. Perhaps Mr. Carmel sympathizes with this brutal murderer, Samir Kuntar. What has become of the Jews? How can Carmel plead for the lives of these horrible, brutal murderers? As we approach the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, shame on Amos Carmel for writing this piece. This author only contributes to further injustice in Israel.
15. All said, it should be reintroduced.
Daniel ,   ISRAEL   (09.17.08)
Such characters should not live in our community.
16. the story from the start is against god rule
sarah ,   jerusalem   (09.17.08)
mother and father are not responsible nor this grandfather . i think the child must not be with this family from the start .and the state must be aware of such condition .not leave children with these corrupt humanes . it is not freedom but it must be the rule
17. Bring it back - and bring it back NOW!!!
Talula ,   Israel   (09.17.08)
Not only for child murderers, but for terrorists. It's quite obvious why terrorists who have murdered Israelis need to be hung or lethally injected- no prisoners - no swap. As for child murderers - they should ALL be hung and not left in a cell to ponder their vile actions - anyone who murders a child has no conscience, no humanity, nothing - hang them all.
18. no life more sacred than another
Ilan ,   Ariel   (09.17.08)
I have to agree with Carmel that the death penalty does not really solve the problem of murder. Not in the case of nationalist or ideological motives and certainly not in socio-pathological cases. Perhaps keeping somebody like Amir or Baghrouti in prison for the rest of the lives is the greatest deterrent possible, as short of torture prolonged imprisonment is the greatest damage a society can inflict upon an individual. In any case, nothing will bring back the victims, and gratifying the public sense of revenge is of no utility.
19. Execute! Execute! Execute!
szamuel ,   budapest   (09.17.08)
Capital punishment now for terrorists, rapists and murderers!
20. Kuntar wouldn't be a Free Man Now
Esther ,   Ofarim, Israel   (09.17.08)
If we had the death penalty. Terrorists who murdered Israeli citizen wouldn't be freed, if we had the death penalty. Premeditated murder and the murder of children should get the appropriate punishment. Punishment shouldn't include getting a college degree on Gov't funds, getting married and having conjugal rights in jail. The life of a murderer should be forfit.
21. A GUARANTEE is REQUIRED
Christy ,   Boston, US   (09.17.08)
People want to be 100% sure that someone convicted of a heinous crime will be locked away for the rest of his/her natural life. When courts, society, the PC Police, etc. can NOT guarantee that the perp sits in prison for the rest of their life; ordinary citizens start demanding the death penalty. The death penalty GUARANTEES that the perp will NEVER go free. This is one of its attractions. When Life means Life (no parole, pardon, prisoner exchange, etc.) then the death penalty is not perceived as needed. So, make Life MEAN Life and you can stop talking about the death penalty.
22. No!
Felix Benninger ,   tel aviv   (09.17.08)
Thank you for this article Mr. Carmel! Besides all the tragedy and horrific details we received, the only thing left for us is to keep our dignity and try to see further than just the yellow tinctured news promoting revenge. The only response to these inhumane incidences is to stay civilized and respect our laws and jurisdiction. Otherwise we are getting deformed exactly by the people committing these crimes. Punishment and removal from society yes, but blood thirsting revenge and us becoming like them: No!
23. #18 But that's not the case is it?
Talula ,   Israel   (09.17.08)
The death penalty is the ultimate punishment for murderers - it also puts an end to prisoner swaps for cold blooded murders. You say "Perhaps keeping somebody like Amir or Baghrouti in prison for the rest of the lives is the greatest deterrent possible" Oh really? you think so? Marwan barghouti will be release very soon and, the way things are going so will Igal Amir. Samir Kuntar has ALREADY been released and probably planning his next terror attack - even though he was given a million life sentences. If life meant life here in Israel, fine - but it doesn't - it means life until the next prisoner swap or the president issues a Pardon. The death penalty MUST be reinstated - it MUST!
24. Amos Carmel
Doreen ,   israel   (09.17.08)
is absolutely right, murder is murder. And death penalty? In the US they have it and look at the crime rate..
25. No one has said no to abortion.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (09.17.08)
Why should the murderers get a free ride? We don't even save innocent infants from the gallows. Why save the most inhumane scum on earth from the gallows? Let's quit acting all saintly. We aren't having any problem knocking off our children. Why should murderers get a free ride? To make us feel better about ourselves in the big scheme of things. Pleeeeze. Liberal nonsense. Hang em high.
26. The difference is, in a word, Oslo.
Jake   (09.17.08)
Do not compare Little Rose with Yitzhak Rabin, Mr. Carmel. Little Rose is an unblemished soul, who is not responsible for the Oslo tragedy that has led to so much death and tragedy. Rabin is. Yigal Amir was a cold-hearted murderer with an evil smirk, and I despise him for what he did. However, 13 years after his death, I have nothing but contempt for Yitzhak Rabin, his legacy, and his disciples. Rose departed form this world without harming a soul.
27. the death penalty
tom ,   toronto, canada   (09.17.08)
i am shocked to see that the israeli public has become completely accustomed to the immoralities of terrorism. terrorists who kill men, womena dn children in cold blood are kept alive for years at the state's expense, and then sent home to a hero's welcome, all in the name of "peace". yes, the death of a child is troubling, and at the hands of her family makes it even more shocking, but the death sentence won't bring the poor child back to life, and it really won't protect other children any better than a life sentence. however, for terrorists, the death penalty would be more appropriate, and better serve the interests of society, plus it would preclude the obscenity of "prisoner releases".
28. death penalty
Bear ,   Zefat   (09.17.08)
Murder is not always murder. sometimes there are extenuating circunstances,, Etc. But cold blooded pre-meditated murder(if proven) should be dealt with appropriatly. However, regarding murder of innocent victims by enemies of the Jews should be dealt with as harshly as possible.
29. Say 'no' to the death penalty?
Kev ,   London   (09.18.08)
Say no to justice.
30. Steven Wilson, this is not an Article about Abortion.
