1. the rise of islam due to fall of West
Mark   (09.19.08)
Mr. Haber is too meek, he doesn't go far enough with the truth. The West is in decline-it has no faith, in God nor in itself; it's ripe for take over by islamists. The US is fighting the leftist desire to bring the US under EU control (all that awful American nationalism). And Israel is self destructing before our eyes, eaten up by guilt from within (as planned by the ayrabs). Civilization hangs by a thread!
2. Who gives the strength ?
Arul   (09.19.08)
It is sad that you all rely on the help of western powers. Don't you think The Almighty GOD is the one who protects you ? What a shame that a nation can go so soon forgetting the providence of the LORD GOD down through the ages. Read your Torah and understand the mighty acts of GOD. It is not the west or its support or its weapons that can save you. understanding this and relying fully on GOD will only save you.
3. The good thing about a depression
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (09.19.08)
is that we get to come out swinging again. Knocking out some more fascists.....to liberalize the world from Iranian facism. The West won't be down for long. Once you hit bottom....the only direction is up from there on.

5. weak west
leib ,   madison wisconsin us   (09.19.08)
the problem began with the West failing to understand that the Soviet collapse was a deliberate retreat to lead us to accept their temporary fake democracy under Yeltsin's first term in order to get inside Western instittuions. Bush I's mistake was to erase the restrictions against technology going to Russia and China even as the two made a rapprochement after Tienenman Square in 89. Clinton's mistake was to see a peace dividend and lower the US milita;ry to the point where it's two and a half wars strategy was eviscerated and to treat terrorism no longer as involving state sponsorship but only stateless acttors and to treat that more as policing than war. Rabin and Peres was to mistakenly assume that cold war Russian relations with the PLO Syria and Iraq and Iran were over and bring the terror chiefs into Gaza and the 7 cities of the West Bank. Bush II's mistake was to treat Putin as a Westernizer even as he 8 years ago connected with Venezuela and began the road to another Cuba like state in America's strategic rear. He also has falied to address Russia's nuclear development; first inherited from Yeltsin the Topol ICBM followed by Putin's mobile Topol and now a new sub nuke. Bush messed up the economy with the low interest rates but Congress helped for a decade with modified banking rules for credit to those who never would have received it.

baraka ,   jerusalem   (09.19.08)
civilization is changed from one generation to other .. so what you thinked it is would be not in the future . evry thing is mobile even the thoughts and believes ... west or east islam is the last religion but after that there are many ways for life western or eastern or the far east so civilization is not only what western think or used to deal
7. The lesson of history
Mike ,   Alabama, US   (09.19.08)
History is the world's greatest teacher but also, the one most often ignored. Old rule: What goes up, must come down. New rule: The only constant is change. That new rule, by the way, is proven by Israel's mere existence. No nation that has ever risen has simply disappeared upon decline. Even the old Roman Empire exists today in the form of the western democracies. So, rather than rising and falling, things do just change. Sometimes the changes are less noticible than others. America has not declined so much as the world around her has finally recovered from WW2.
8. Kiss The Vicious Colonial State Good Riddance
J. Abramoff   (09.19.08)
It belongs to the toilet of history for its racism, its vileness, for its duplicity, for its endless claims of being victimized as it robs & murder the native people of Palestine. Zionism was and is a crude and aggressive idea that endangers and shames the Jewish people.
9. Gloom and Doom
Robert ,   New Jersey, USA   (09.19.08)
I remember the same words being said of President Truman. According to contemporary 'experts,' he was a buffoon who history will remember as a terrible president. Those historians had to eat their words. Mr. Haber, despite your wishful thinking, President Bush will be seen as a visionary, far ahead of his time in SEEING CLEARLY and most importantly, ACTING BOLDLY against the threat of his time. Truman's threat was Communism and the last vestiges of Japanese imperialism. His actions ending WWII were bold. Bush's is Islamo-fascism. He will leave office with his Constitutional mandate to preserve and protect his country intact. Obama...well, he'll be a one sentence footnote by historians: the first black presidential nominee. The US is awakening to the danger of this Trojan horse - an enemy from within. Israel, wisely, is beginning to see through the empty suit, too. The eulogies of the West are already being written by the Habers of the world. He's in good company. Chavez, Morales, Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong-il, Putin and Ortega chime in this macabre chamber choir of doom. Their tune is dissonant and strident but not one that future generations will be humming.
10. haber's opinion again irritating
alexi   (09.19.08)
Regardless of the US position, israel has to prepare itself to handle situations, stop with concessions, be realistic and daring and decisive. Haber, you share some blame for israel's trouble with your stupid oslo support.
11. #2 mark need you be reminded that just 60 short years ago
(09.19.08)
the nazis tried their experiement on us also. however, they were some 60 million not 1.3 billion today we face. lets face it, in a few years or so, for us, it s ''game over'' unless someone gets the balls to stand up and stop all this crap
12. Don*t Quit US, Renegotiate exploitation of Israel
David Turner ,   Richmond, USA   (09.19.08)
Of course all you write is true. But your suggestion that the reason Israel should look elsewhere for a protector is because of the decline of the west is wrong. First of all, since the 67 War, when the US replaced France as her main protector and arms supplier, Israel shifted dependency to the US, (52nd state, Coca Cola and McDonalds, etc). The illusion/delusion that there is reciprocity between the two states has encouraged that dependency and clouded the judgment of Israel, her people and her politicians. For a prime minister to assume one of his/her primary tasks is the closeness of relationship with the US fosters precisely the situation in which Israel found herself under the Reagan Administration when, having joined the US in the highly illegal Irangate affair as arms broker, when the involvement of the US in affair became public, who did spokesmen for Reagan blame for involving THEM in the affair? Right! The same *best friend of Israel* had no compunctions regarding the sale of highly dangerous to Israel offensive weapons systems to the Saudis, including AWACS theatre control aircraft capable of following the movements of every fighter and tank in the IDF. Does Israel have more to show for the *Special Relationship* with a GW Bush Administration? The ill-conceived and conducted invasion of Iraq decapitated the only credible enemy of the Iranians, encouraging the Islamic Republic in the development of their nuclear agenda, their hegemonic threat to the US-protected oil dependencies across the Gulf and the obvious outcome, oil speculation due to threat strongly contributing to financial crisis and political instability worldwide. And, you guessed it, when the war turned south Israel was blamed by administration spokesmen to encouraging Bush to invade. As if Israel and the Saudis and the CIA had not tried to discourage this highly destabilizing war. Or take the Lebanon war: Bush encouraged Israel to take on Hezbollah, proxy of Iran who was making so much trouble for the US in Iraq. When Israel took too long Condi ordered Israel not to send ground troops north of the Litani. End of war, a loss Israel cannot afford; a mild inconvenience for Bush. Or the president*s insistence on forcing democracy on the Palestinians, although again warned by Abbas and Israel that the only victor would be Hamas. With allies like that… No, you are correct that Israel should reconsider her present alliance. But your reason, Mr. Haber, that she should look elsewhere because of the decline of the west misses the point. Israel should do so because she allows herself to be involved in a disproportionate relationship in which, for the honor of identification with the superpower, she is exploited and endangered. A better solution would be, not to jettison the relationship but to renegotiate it, to demand her worth in performing her US-intended role as cats paw to threaten those who threaten America*s true interests, Arab oil.

dave ,   zichron yaacov   (09.19.08)
It wasn't working out very well, to seek allies only in the west. And why should the west care about Israel anyway? There is little to be gained and too much is at stake. If you analyse western politics and diplomacy of most western countries over the last century, you will get a very ambivalent picture. I've been a proponent of a strategic partnership with India for years. And what we have achieved so far is nothing less but s solid success.
16. You can’t fight an enemy you’re afraid to offend.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (09.19.08)
Pick up the morning paper any day or log on to your computer and you’ll be treated to reports of savagery by followers of Islam. No one could blame you if you drew the inference that Islam worldwide is a malevolent force. Yet, many would have you believe that the problem isn’t Islam, but “Radical Islam.” Virtually all voters in “Palestine” back terrorists. In Britain, 25% of Muslims approve of the London subway bombings of July 7, 2005 as described at : http://xrl.us/ontxq
17. Then why the Israeli prsidential stupidity?
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens,NYC   (09.19.08)
If Israel needs an economically strong American ally, then the LAST thing you want to see is McCain as president. McCain in the past and especially over the last few days has illustrated he not only supports Bush's disastrous economic policies, but is even more clueless than Bush (which ain't easy). Obama is the only chance America has to dig our way out of the economic catastrophe caused by Bush. He also says every day he a firm friend and ally of Israel. Get real, Israelis. Forget about McCain. he is economic poison to the western world.

19. Perry Stone, Jr. has an interesting view on the East-West
Rivkah   (09.19.08)
power exchanges. He noticed that every five hundred years or nearly so, there is a shift in power from East to West and back to the East again. Israel can be a part of the East or the West. Power shifted from the Roman West to the Mongol and Ottoman Empire in the East and back again to the West. Now power is shifting to the East again since it appears to be a cycle.
20. Did you haer about the bank run on Wednesday in the United
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (09.19.08)
States? 79 Billion dollars was pulled out of money market funds in a bank run. 2.6% of deposits..... which help pay for companies borrowing needs....... on a day to day basis. Bernanke and Hank Paulson teamed up with Pelosi, Barney Frank ,and the rest of the gang. and told them the bad news Wednesday evening. Bernanke and Paulson told them that if they didn't buy off all the bad loans of the banks......then the bank run would most surely continue, on the money market accounts. Financial meltdown of the most serious kind.....1929 all over again...would most probably ensue. When asked if this would fix the problem....they said they couldn't be sure. You can lose your money in a money market account. That is what a lot of people recently learned. And the trust factor for banks, is out the door with the dish water. The big question is.....will this bank run stop? Or will the United States financial system implode into oblivion like it did in 1929? If we wait a few weeks more....we will probably know the answer. The government keeps everyone up to date on these bank runs you know. Yeah right! If Bernanke saves us from what Greenspan cooked in his oven.......he deserves a friggin pay raise.
21. Steve G
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (09.19.08)
The banking markets were deregulated in1999 under Bill Clinton. The Democrats and Republicans are responsible for this mess. The Dirivatives mess was started in the 1980's.... and went from 65 Trillion dollars under Clinton..... to 650 Trillion Dollars today under Bush. These dirivatives are used to insure the loans that banks make to other parties. By using dirivatives....the money loaned becomes cloaked and invisible. Stealth loans. These loans don't have to be shown on a banks books. The bank doesn't have to have any collateral to cover these loans. This allows the banks to loan out money 100 to 1. These dirivatives have allowed the banks to loan money they don't have in the first place. Which has caused this total financial disaster. This has happened under numerous administrations. Both Democrats and Republicans are to blame for this mess. McCain...Biden...and Obama... said nothing about this poison, until it welled up in the water system and poisoned the American Public. This mess has been brewing for a long time. It just finally boiled over the pot. Bush was cooking at the stove at the time. In another 4 months....the next president would have been at the stove cooking.

do when oils prices crash in the wake of an economic downturn... and china in the fall of exports. These so-called challengers are one trick-ponies
23. Israel helped
Aryeh Wetherhorn ,   Elazar, Israel   (09.19.08)
The Israeli ruling elite played a big part in this problem. Our leaders jumped on the bandwagon proclaiming there were Palestinians to whom we could talk . We, and the West, ignored the fact that theses same people have an uncompromising stand that calls for the destruction of Israel as a state. Our leaders are the ones practicing appeasment and giving away things for nothing. Israel lost a war in Lebanon because of the politicians. Hamas shots rockets at Israel with impunity because of the same people. We free terrorists in return for dead bodies! What else should you expect from a political elite that seems to care more about lining their own pockets than about serving (or protecting) the citizens of the country that elected them?
24. doomsday predictions
Ali ,   Los Angeles   (09.19.08)
The current decline of the west is temporary-i expect the west to recover, although there will be a period of continued decline. America and Europe have been too busy "imposing" their will on 3rd world nations most of the last 200 years. Colonialism in India, North Africa, the middle east etc...are just a few examples. The way to regain supremacy, defeat terror, and promote peace are all inter-related, yet the west has neither the desire nor the ability to do so at this time. Israel is a key part to this. When Obama says that Israel's security is sacrosanct, and both political parties pledge allegiance to aipac, negelecting the true victims the palestinians, it means that the united states will continue to do what is has been doing-which is protecting a true rogue nation that commits war crimes, land theft, and ethnic cleansing....all at its own expense. the west protects the arab regimes, regardless of how despotic they are, because the alternative -democracy-would generate an arab world that places values of education, equality, economic opportunity and competition in the world market. the west wants the status quo to continue...which it will not...it cannot. Israel should realize--no Israel must realize that a true peace with the palestinians and the arab peoples will allow it to thrive regardless of the strength of the west--- israel wants to have its cake and eat it too--normalized relations with its neighbors, and continiued oppresion of the arabs (both inside Israel and the region)...this will not happen--while israel has peace with egypt and jordan, the peace is only with the governments, and not the people of those nations. Blame islamic radicalism, terrorists, anti-semitism..or whatever you wish to blame, but the true hatred of israel is not because it is jewish or because its values are western, but because of what it does to the meek palestinians. Some may label my comments rambling, but those who are wise will realize the truth in it and my sincerity. peace, salams
25. #2 The real problem is Religious
Ted ,   UK   (09.19.08)
Stop live in your dream land. Yes GOD will help , like he helped during the destruction of the temple, and like he helped during the holocaust... The problem of the western world is to realize that democracy should not be taken for granted and you have to fight for it. That what thw estern world id during WII , and unfortunately it looks like it will have to do it again against the facshism of Islam
26. #24 to Ali
Ted ,   UK   (09.19.08)
Your ignorance is amazing.. as far as it concerns you history has started in 1967!! In 1947 a division of the land of Israel was accepted by the UN, and by the Jewish governemnt in Israel. Peace could have started there and then... who didn't accept it? all the arab nations around it who urged the local palestinians to wait or get out of their homes till they will eliminate the new jewish state. Who were the meak palestinian then?? they were pawns in the game of their brothers. From 1948 till 1967 both gaza and the west bank were under Egyptian and Jordanian sovereignity... who was responsible to the meak palestinian then?? both in 1967 and 1973 Israel had again to act in self-defence. In Camp David summit in 2000, Mr. Arafat was offred the deal of his life which promissed not only a full palestinian state but also huge financial support from the US. So again as the quote (from Aba-Eben) said: The palestinians have never missed to miss a chance during their quest during the last 50 years The main contribution they made to mankind is terrorism and airplane kidnapping.
27. Scaremongering
Nice Bloke ,   Rochdale   (09.19.08)
The west has faced far greater and graver challenge's than this only to come through wiser and stronger. We need to keep things in perspective; the west has had unprecedented and continuous economic growth for the last 2 decades or more. It was inevitable that there would be a slow down at some point. Our strength lies in the fact that we are democracies and have accountable politicians.
28. Credit Crunch will End Israel
John ,   London,UK   (09.19.08)
Current economic crisis will result in end of Israel. If Wall Street goes down, then US will no longer provide billions of dollors of yearly aid to Israel. When that happen, Israel will not be able to survive for 3 months. Israel needs US to regain its market strength. US dollor is declining. Israel should take notice. It has had its good days. As USA TODAY said last week, party is almost over. Iran said US is sinking and this will spell doom for Israel as a state. Jewish financial firms lead many top names on Wall Street. I think Israeli leaders ought to make sure they stay alive and not sink like Lehman Brothers.
29. Genesis in the Bible says that as long as man is on the
Rivkah   (09.19.08)
earth there will be seedtime and harvest. So life will go on, no matter what even after Armageddon which will be seven years after Jerusalem is divided or three and a half years after a world leader goes into the rebuilt Jewish temple to say he is god when he is not.
30. West lost, which east to be winner?
Lütfi Altinel ,   Orhangazi,Turkey   (09.19.08)
West lost because all structure is materialist and none moral truth faith. Present time is important what will do Israel. If Israel continiue same way then Israel to be lost. Israel must go to Tzion root and open Judaism to all nations. Because Torah is first Holy book and wisdom is capital for truth faith. Islam no way to progres, islam is closes. Only faith to Torah to be save all mankind!! According new faith should be built new world with new economical system. Jerusalem must place for new world center for peace like UN !
