1. Farce conversions
Moshe ,   Israel   (09.25.08)
I know many people who converted and soon after go back to not observing almost anything. Their conversion is a farce, no matter which rabbi did it.
2. Limit Haredi influence in Israeli politics and society
David Turner ,   Richmond, USA   (09.25.08)
Religious extremism cannot be allowed to dictate law to the secular and democratic state of Israel. In any other country anti-nationalists are highly unlikely to find employment as gatekeepers to national identity. Israel is exceptional in the world as the only state of the Jews, not as a Jewish state identified by its most extreme religious elements. If Israel is to continue to fulfill its Zionist mission as refuge to all Jews regardless of affiliation or lack thereof she must find a way to limit political influence of the radical and anti-Zionist haredim, politically and socially. They are eroding the state's mission, projecting a hostile face to the world Jewish community who, as in Israel, are overwhelmingly not orthodox, to say nothing of extremist haredi. It is sad to see Jews anywhere in the world seeking the destruction of Israel, born of centuries of persecution most recently expressed in Shoah. To see Israeli haredim travel to Iran to applaud an Holocaust denial exhibition, to see their American counterparts join Ahmadinejad and applaud him as a "peace seeker" defames and justifies anti-Judaism not only in the eyes of our enemies, but confuses our Diaspora regarding these, who increasingly come to be identified with Israel and her mission.
3. Someone who does not observe commandments of the Torah
Avraham ,   NYC   (09.25.08)
issues rulings on conversions! Amazing.

You forget that the Rabbinical court gets its power from these same secular Jews. Under Jewish religious law they have no basis of power over Rabbi Druckman.
5. it was so stupid and bad to disqualify those convertions

6. As a Haredi Jew,
Ephraim ben Aharon ,   Bnei Brak, Israel   (09.26.08)
former talmid of the Mir Yeshiva, and very very very attached to the Jewish tradition, I say Bravo to Mazuz! I am not the only Haredi Jew in this country who agrees with Rabbi Drukman. I know that Drukman is not Haredi, and many of my friends do not consider him as a Rabbi. I did hear him talk once and I concluded: 'er ken lernen" (he is not an ignoramus), he is a very G'd-fearing and responsible person. Our Jewish tradition and culture will not survive if we shall not make conversion to Judaism easy, rapid and free.

That someone has legal authority in Israel, and that is what he is doing. He was nto making a halchic decision, but a legal one. Just liek you may make a decision according to your capacity, he made one according to his. As for the conversions, the Torah only stipulates that a man need to be circumcised in order to join Israel. The various halachic issues such as mikve etc are rabbinical and artificial.
8. Why?
Convert ,   Israel   (09.26.08)
I underwent an orthodox conversion, though I do not live a religions lifestyle I have deep respect for those who do. I am also trying to bring up my children knowing they are Jewish. However, the one thing the made me go VERY distant from religion is the Rabbis in this country. I war refused a Teudat Ravakut, my Teudat Giur arrived 10 month late. The religious leaders are not only parasites, they create a huge gap between them and most Jews of this country. Start thinking...not filling your pockets and stepping on everybody!

10. Mazuz's Opinion Is Irrelevant
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (09.26.08)
Mr. Mazuz 's interfering in the rulings of the rabbinical courts is a clear breach of the concept of separation of religion and state. What it is his business? Mr. Mazuz is not authorized to offer an opinion on the validity of a Halachic entity and their decisions since he is not himself neither a rabbi or rabbinical court. It is a deep embarrassment that so-called "observant" Jews had to appeal to the secular authorities for a judgment given the latter's well known dislike for Hareidi courts and their stricter application of Jewish Law. It was highly predictible from the outset that Mr. Mazuz would favor R. Drukman as the latter is perceived by him as soft on conversions, very much in tune with the soft approach the Secular take to all of Jewish observance. The operative principle being "do whatever you can to weaken and undermine authentic and meticulous Torah observance among the people."

Thank you. If we are to survive we must be more welcoming.
12. Conversions?
Rachel ,   Jerusalem   (09.28.08)
In the town where I used to live the Reform rabbi gave potential converts 6 whole lessons in Judaism and then converted them. They were not told to keep Shabbat, Kashrut, or anything else. I certainly don't feel that these converts are Jewish. Only an Orthodox conversion to a convert who promises to keep the minimal: Shabbat, Kashrut, and Taharat Hamishpacha should be valid.
