people like you are looking for enemies. you must learn to say thank you. stop being so negative.
2. Good point.

3. So close..
John ,   Jerusalem   (09.26.08)
But you still missed it. It's not their values and morals, but rather understanding Christianity from a Jewish perspective that allows them to truly love the Jewish people and the Land of Israel. The New Testament surely doesn't teach anything against the Jews, and only those who look for an interpretation such as this will find it.
4. To #3 John is way off the radar
Avi ,   Kiryat Shmona   (09.26.08)
How can one understand Christianity from a Jewish perspective when the Jewish way of life significantly differs, both ideologically and practically, from Christian dogma. Your statement about no anti-semitism being shown in the Bible is also highly erroneous, since, as this article clearly states and academics/historians have agreed upon throughout the ages, "the root of modern day anti-Semitism is found in the New Testament and throughout the centuries we have suffered terribly at the hands of devout Christians."
5. Israel
Jeff Marran ,   Palos Heights, Ill   (09.26.08)
Mr. Brickman, I am a devout Christian that resides just outside of Chicago, Illinois. I would like you to know that the Christians I spend my time around are devout and have a true love of Israel the country and the citizens of Isralel. We are taught in our bible that the savior is a Jewish man. Our bible teaches us that salvation is first for the Jew and then for the Gentile. When I read this passage prior to being a Christian it was very odd as an American citizen to be told that in essence I am second in line. After my relationship with the Lord grew I realized that the Jewish people are very special. I want you and the Jewish people to know that we pray daily for peace, love, wisdom and patience for you. We might be on the other side of the world but most Christians that I know hold you and the Jewish people in a special place in their heart. May the Lord bless all of you.
6. Very good points ... with a caveat
Avi ,   USA   (09.26.08)
All the above principles can and should be applied to individual Christians. However, they can not be applied to entire Christian movements. To understand how to deal with movements, one needs to look at their leaders and at their theology. The problem that we face as Jews is not that we are friendly with friendly Christians. That's normal. The problem is that many of our lay and religious leaders are friendly with Christian movements that have duplicitous leaders and scary theologies. And they seem to discard all those red flags just because they crave the acceptance of others. They should be more discerning.
7. Wary of religions
Ben   (09.26.08)
" We must be wary of those intolerant people who use their religion to look down upon and be intolerant of others." Like Chabad or Orthodoxy?
8. Avi, the New Testament is not anti-Semitic
Barbara ,   USA   (09.26.08)
If you think it is, then all the horrible things the OT prophets said about the children of Israel must be anti-Semitic (by your definition) too. Read Isaiah, Chapter 1 for example.
9. #4 and #8, there are anti-Jewish statements in New Testament
Jake   (09.27.08)
and there is no doubt about it that some of these statements have been the cause of anti-Jewish hatreds and blood libels against Jews in Christendom. In particular this in Matthew 27: "23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 24When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children." It is known for a fact that these Gospels were written decades after the events they depict, around the time of the Jewish rebellion against Rome (66-70 C.E.), when anti-Jewish sentiment was widespread in the Hellenistic eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. The gospel writers, who wrote in Greek in Hellenistic environments, had every reason to shift the blame for Jesus' crucifiction away from the Roman governors and towards the Jews. Depicting Pilate as a humane but weak leader who could not hold back vindictive Jewish mobs flies in the face of everything we know about the man! Pilate was described in detail by Josephus as a cold, calculating, powerful brute who would send plain clothes agents among Jewish mobs, and proceed to bust up those mobs with clubs if those mobs appeared to be on the verge of a riot. He was in fact recalled from Judaea back to Rome for excessive cruelty. There is no precedent in Judaism that a Sanhedrin would convene at Passover just for the sake of condemning Jesus for alleged blasphemy. There is no record in Jewish history of the Sanhedrin ever condemning to death a man accused of such crimes. However, even if they had the authority to condemn people to death for religious crimes, as John 8 implies, the penalty would have been carried out by stoning. Crucifiction was a penalty reserved strictly for rebels against the Roman state. Jesus was crucified because his messianic claims as 'king of the Jews' was seen by the Romans, and perhaps their Jewish political appointees in Judaea such as Caiaphas, as a usurpation of ROMAN political authority. The real reason for Jesus' crucifiction is implied in John 11: 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. 49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realise that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.

11. Absolute Nonsense
Matthew   (09.27.08)
I appreciate Rabbi Brackman's willingness to appreciate the millions of Christians who love and support Israel. However, I would expect a Rabbi to be somewhat more learned. Take, for example, this false remark: "Many academics rightly point out, however, that the root of modern day anti-Semitism is found in the New Testament and throughout the centuries we have suffered terribly at the hands of devout Christians." According to Merriam's Dictionary, modern means "of, relating to, or characteristic of the present or the immediate past." Okay, let us go back and look at the "immediate past" with respects to persecution of Jews and anti-semitism. 1) Hitler and National Socialism: Hitler was a racist, not a Christian. He reviled Christianity, often specifically because of the love Christians have for Yeshua (Jesus), a Jew. There is absolutely no justification for his hate in the New Testament. 2) Stalin (USSR): this lunatic tormented millions of people, . He was an atheist. Again, Christianity uninvoled. 3) Islamic hatred for Jews: Obviously, this has nothing to with Christianity. The good Rabbi then goes on to quickly brush over the Islamic history of anti-semitism by implying that Muslims often treated Jews well. This is completely inaccurate. Read "The History of Islamic Anti-Semitism) by Andrew Bostom and see for yourself. Hatred for any non-Muslim is commanded on the Qu'ran. Beginning with Mohammad and the murder of every make member of the Jewish Quraish tribe of Medina Muslims have overwhelmingly despised Jews. As for "devout Christians" presecuting Jews all I cann say is the Rabbi has a poor understanding of what a Christian really is. I challenge him, or anyone else, to find any explicit anti-semitism in the New Testament. With the possible exceptions of Luke and Acts every book in the NT was authored by a Jewish person. The entire foundation of Christianity is rooted on the Tanach as the early Christians (again, nearly all Jews) felt compelled to interpret it. Many ugly, sinful people who claimed to be Christians have existed in the last 2,000 years. But simply calling yourself something does not make it true. Jesus said, "salvation is from the Jews" (John chapter4). No real Christian, someone who believes that he or she has experience that very salvation, could possibly hate the people through whom it came.

Drs. Dorothea Killus ,   Lörrach, Germany   (09.27.08)
It's just balm what you write, dear John, and so true; thank you indeed! If you, dear Avi, have ever read the so-called New Testament, I doubt very much. I have studied the theory that it is anti-semitic at university - as a false modern doctrine which could not be more satanic! It is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who leads Jews and Gentiles likewise to a deep love for God's elect Israel. Isaiah 2:2 is ever true!

14. Messiah
David ,   New England   (09.27.08)
It is true that the goyim have at times misused the message of Messiah. Paul the apostle says "I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in."
15. Example of Anti-Semitic NT
Mendel ,   Los Angeles   (09.27.08)
Recently, I had a discussion with a Xtian regarding the anti-semitism of their New Testament. I dusted off some old research materials, Greek and Latin grammar/dictionaries, and I was able to find the true version of the Latin Vulgate and the Greek NT without the "text modification" of his highness King James and presented him the following: Luke 19:11-28 The Parable of the Minas This parable is a short ditty in which Yeshke talks to his followers about being faithful to him and warning them not to be like those Jews who don't accept him as the Messiah-King. In the final verse, number 27 Yeshke refers to those (Jews) who don't accept his rule. . . .and he advises his followers that they should be brought to him and slayed. 19:27 verumtamen inimicos meos illos qui noluerunt me regnare super se adducite huc et interficite ante me 19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay [them] before me. The verb used in the verse that is translated "to slay "them" is Katasphazate (Greek) or Interficite (Latin) . . .which is translate as "slay them" in the modifed King James Version. Since the Latin translation came after the Greek it would be more prudent to discuss the choice of Greek words. This verb, Kataphazate, is used in the Greek Septuagint for references to animal slaughter and sacrifice and in a parallel secular context by the Greek historian Herodutus in reference to prisoner slaughter via throat cutting. Greek has many different verbs for the English "to kill." There are many types of killing in Greek. This verb has a unique context and for this reason it was chosen from the other optional words. Now, being Jews we won't miss this part. What is the connection between throat cutting and animal slaughter? Well, Shechita of course. This New Testament parable when read under detailed analysis states if we Jews do not accept the authority of a self-declared king and his malchus which emphasizes a redefinition of Torah and the elimination of mitzvot then as a result we (Jews) are to be gathered and schechted like animals in front of the said king by his followers and not the king himself. Funny that this "Messiah' King is to be a merely visual participant. He can't even do the dirty work himself.

Dear Precious Jews... The Torah is all about a BLOOD COVENANT.. but since the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD... you have none.. fasting and prayer will not get you to heaven.. the law is INCOMPLETE.. Jesus is the Messiah.. Isiah 53
17. Jake/Mendel - The NT is not any more "anti-Semitic" than OT
Barbara ,   USA   (09.27.08)
As another poster said, both are Jewish Scriptures. The Tanach is full of the exact same kinds of prophecies, concepts, threats, and promises of restoration for the children of Israel as the New Testament. An anti-Semite could use proof texts from the Tanach just as easily to defame and persecute the Jews if he wanted to.
18. REAL Christians who are Jews in their hearts and a part of
Rivkah   (09.27.08)
the Jewish body of Yeshua the Messiah are friends of the Jews who are Jews in their hearts and love Adonai and try to obey his commandments. Sadly, there are few real Christians in the world. Most follow "another Jesus". The book, "The Hebrew Yeshua and the Greek Jesus" is important to study, to learn which Christians are friends to the Jews and which are not. Those who worship "another Jesus", the Greek Jesus, hate the Jews and think they replaced Isarel and Judah in God's plan. Those Christians who worship the Hebrew Yeshua are one with the Jews who worship Adonai even though neither group realizes that. One of the reasons the Messiah will come is to reunite the lost house of Israel with the house of Judah. Where is the lost house of Israel? The university textbook, "The Scepter of Judah and the Birthright of Joseph" traces the emigration of the lost house of Israel and the house of Judah from the dispersion to the present. Yeshua came for the sake of the lost house of Israel long ago when he came as a servant and sacrificial lamb, fulfilling the Spring Feasts of the Lord. His disciples took the good news to the Gentiles, but Yeshua was sent to the lost house of Israel. Rarely did Yeshua help the Gentiles when he was on the earth. He helped a Samaritan woman and a Roman Centurian, but mostly, he helped Jews who needed his help, healing them and teaching them the commandments. Beware of those who follow "another Jesus". Condoleeza Rice is one. Jimmy Carter is another. There are many and they are wolves in sheep's clothing in their effect on Israel.

20. #15 The parable in Luke
DavidM ,   New England   (09.27.08)
I think the parable should be taken in light of the fact that He told it because "He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately." To disavow them of that notion He begins with "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return."
21. Some religious books legitimize and command genocide
Pete Eriksen ,   Anchorage, U.S.A.   (09.27.08)
Re: "good people will use their religious books for good whilst evil people will use that same book to legitimize and further their reprehensible desires and evil ideas." ................................. My comment: Some religious books not only legitimize genocide, but also command it .......... Deu 20 17 "But of the cities of these people.. you shall not keep alive anything that breathes.. But you shall completely destroy [the native nations] as the Lord your God has commanded you;" ........... Numbers 31:15-18 "Have you kept all the women alive? .. kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately." Ex. 23 32; Deut. 7 2 "you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them, and you shall not make marriages with them" ................ Ex. 23 33 "They shall not live in your land"
22. #15, Please look at Yehoshua 1:18
Jonathan   (09.27.08)
Yehoshua is like Mashiach Yeshua. Please let's read this verse. Josua 1:18 (KJV) Whosoever, he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death only be strong and of a good courage. Shalom,
23. 'intolerant' christian 'friends'
elliot ,   usa   (09.27.08)
does brackman mean only religious intolerant or does he include pro- plo liberal secular 'intolerant' bigots as 'friends'? thoelogically all christians are against judaism--some would kill the jews before their messiah returns, some only after.Since moschiach will be a jew and not a christian, later is far better than sooner. Thus brackman's disdain for the 'intolerant' right misses the mark. Why should jews within the jewish state tolerate any assault from enemies spiritual or other.?
24. Quran Anti-semite??
Arnold ,   Toronto   (09.27.08)
This Rabbi needs some more learning, just picks stereotypes that are not even there. Quran only rebukes bad Jews that your own books even condemn, it condemns bad Arabs as well. But it also speaks of righteous Jews who follow the Torah and not the man made doctrine. Condemning the idol worshiping Jews and Arabs doesn't make you anti-Semite, it just makes you monotheist. And righteous Jews are considered Muslims, you don't have to follow Mohammad's message to be saved, if you follow the Torah you will be saved.
25. I guess Moses was an anti-semite too
Dani' El Ben Judah ,   SF USA   (09.27.08)
Exo 32:26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. Exo 32:27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. Exo 32:28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

Walt K ,   Sherbrooke, Canada   (09.28.08)
I'm prety agree with you, but don't try to reunite every christians into the same pocket. Also, Hitler wasn't a christian, he rather desired to become the living god of an aryan religion... but he preferred to kill himself rather than be crucified... For the rest, I think lot of semit haters are simply jalous for the economic succes of the communities around the world. At last, nothing to do with christianity, but be aware about the growing influence that inflate muslim communities cultivate around the world.

29. To put it sinfully "what a load of crap"
DANNY ,   America   (09.28.08)
Those same academics tell you, "you can you can make peace" with those sworn to destroy you. They ain't actually very fvcking smart. Because there will be no peace... God tells us that. and giving away what God gave you to try and appease these monsters ain't going to give you peace. Just more suffering. Turn to your God O Israel to find your peace. From what I hear out of you all, is you don't believe in God, you are taught by idiots who change your history to make God less than He clearly demonstrated he Is, least you have to turn from your disbelief. You all is retarded...
