Engaging in hand-to-hand combat is risky even for those who are well trained, particularly if it is one against many. The fight could easily have ended with the pilot having a broken arm or worse, putting him out of military commission. The pilot should have used his firearm to end this confrontation decisively and with less risk to himself. However, he was probably reluctant to do so because of the potential fallout and legal action that he would have had to face from the politically-correct regime that would likely hang him out to dry.
