1. Israel is in a war and he supports the enemy.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (09.28.08)
2. hypocrits !!
yoel ,   Ra'nana   (09.28.08)
he also declared many stupid things in the past. Andhe also told that violence against "settlers" is legitimate. It's somehow normal if some people hate him. Yes, we are supposed to live in a Democracy. But encouraging some palestinian terrorism is also unacceptable. This guy is now a victim. But I also take into account he expressed no compassion to other terror victims; while it concerned "settlers"
3. Concerning the attack on Prof. Sternhell
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (09.28.08)
There is no excuse for anyone to take the law in their own hands. But concerning the attack on Prof. Sternhell, it may be appropriate to place this principle in its proper context: If an Israeli professor were to pen an article in which he called for Jews to conduct terror acts against the Arab population, he would be indicted by the law enforcement system of the state of Israel which forbids sedition, incitement and racism. However, Sternhell wrote an article in Haaretz on May 11th, 2002, in which he called for Palestinians to carry out terror actions beyond the green line, which constitutes a clear case of incitement to murder. Hundreds of citizens complaints were filed against Sternhell, yet the Israeli law enforcement system would not investigate or indict him for incitement. Consult : http://xrl.us/bi5da
4. Promoter of killing of Settlers calls for "CoExistence"?
Yehuda   (09.28.08)
5. Rule of Law, peaceful means
eddie ,   london, UK   (09.28.08)
Sternhell, allegedly promoted terrorism agianst the settlements. For this, he should be brought to trial for incitement. Vigilante groups are not welcome. Everyone, from the PM down should keep the law.
6. Does Sternhell still support terrorism against settlers
Mordechai   (09.28.08)
Remember Sternhell has come out in the past giving advice to terrorists that he thinks it is OK to kill Jews living in the settlements. Is that still OK. Is he against all terror or just againt him.
7. Sternhell Should Be Speaking From Jail
MK ,   Philadelphia USA   (09.28.08)
8. Still no proof who doneit!
Arie ,   BaGolan   (09.28.08)
Was it a right winger? Was it a leftie trying to recreate the sympathy for the anti-Zionists that has all but disappeared from all sectors except meretz, balad, and hamass? was it qurei (the leader of fatah) trying to garnish additional support for livni as he openly did during the 1%ers primaries? First prove who did it, then make pronouncements. Until then, one can presume that this "professor" was forewarned and involved!
9. Attack was probably a fake
Mordechai   (09.28.08)
Folks lets be honest this attack was probably a fake to demonize the right. How convenient a radical leftist gets attacked and calls on the leftist government that cannot win the next election to dry up the "swamp" of the right. This is so clearly a pretext for criminal action against those that disagree with Sternhill's leftist politics.
10. Does Professor Sternhell regret inciting against those
Mike ,   Jerusalem   (09.28.08)
living outside the green line? Does he want to coexist with those he disagrees with? Is Sternhell aware that the so-called settlers as the media calls them, are of the Religious Zionist Dati Leumi theology? Does he think Chareidim are settlers? Or the non religious? Does MR. Melchior accept Sternhell's incitement and only condemn those he perceives are on the right? Would Melchior still condemn spewing hate if it was proven to him that it was the left doing it????
11. Jews and Israelis give way to much credibility to academics.
Stewart ,   U.S.A.   (09.28.08)
It's kind of a culture thing stemming from our love of learning, love of education, and love of Torah. The problem is that many academics and rabbis assume false premises in their arguments. But we tend to swallow them because they are argued so well, and their source is a "respected professor, rabbi, intellectual, ect. The Torah has always taught that people need to be educated so as to think for themselves and to be able to challange authority when authority miss steps or strays. That is the true essence of any democracy especially a Jewish democracy arugueably the earliest of its kind and the template for the world's modern democracies.
12. Over-extended media milage
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah   (09.28.08)
The word "Sternhell" produces 34 results only on ynetnews.com: clearly an over-extended media milage. "Tovia Shtatman", the 9 yrs old Israeli Jewish, and let me add religious, kid stabbed by an Arab terrorist seven times in Yitzar little more than two weeks ago, returns zero results. Now let me say, and shout it out as loud as I can: this is dishonest reporting and ynetnews.com, if it wants its readers to take it seriously, should review and correct its editorial policy.
13. Who is desecrating God? Religion or secularity?
Ben ,   USA   (09.28.08)
Rabbi Melchior...How about "he who harms the Torah, harms democracy? What is more a desecration of God? Harming the Torah laws that was given by God? or harming democracy laws created by people who don't want to be Jewish and don't want to obey Torah laws?
14. Judaism and Deocracy
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah   (09.28.08)
Judaism has nothing to do with democracy. Wake up Jews and stop worshiping this modern day golden calf, that the State of Israel is.
15. how convenient
(09.28.08)
Jews imprisoned for terrorism are held in inhuman conditions, much worse then murderers Barghouti and Kuntar. These Jews have recently been campaigning to receive rights equal to those given to Muslims who performed much worse crimes. Suddenly, a convenient "attack" against Sternhell gives the "Jewish Section" of the Security Service "evidence" to deny the Jews equal rights. I guess someone is drinking champagne today.
16. Israel has enough enemies.Doesn't need left +right threats
Sam ,   Canada   (09.28.08)
As passionate as the Israeli left and right can get about peace or biblical borders, people should have enough sense not to get at each other's throats. Both sides need each other for the country to exist and should not behave as hot-headed lunatics.
17. sternhell pretends to be israel's new god?
yahn goodey   (09.28.08)
israel's real G-D says we are not to co-exist with the strangers on His land(numbers 33:55) sternhell should move to an arab country if he wishes to attempt co-existence with them. i suggest first place he should try would be mecca in saudi arabia. can't wait to see how long they would tolerate his presence there.
18. Democrocy
Ralph Levy ,   USA   (09.28.08)
The whole election was a farce. What about condemning attacks on Jews and on Jewish religious places. What about condemnation of leftist groups getting money from foreign governments. http://ralphsrant1.blogspot.com
