1. LIKE IN FRENCH IT IS NEVER LINKED TO ANTI-SEMITISM..
David   (10.03.08)
EVEN IF ATTACKED JEWS HAVE BEEN INSULTED WITH ANTI-SEMITIC SLURS BEFORE. JEWS MUST REACT AGAINST THOSE BASTARDS
2. fiction out of Jewish psychosis
observer   (10.03.08)
She said investigators do not believe the attack was linked to religious prejudice.
3. I thought it was just the IDF
Brian ,   NYC USA   (10.03.08)
I thought religious Jews only got harassed in the Israeli army. My mistake.
4. #2
(10.03.08)
so, enlighten us, what was it linked to? i can imagine if every black man in the army was beaten and treated as such.....what do you think? the factthat he wore a kippa has anything to do with it? do not be naive, there is plenty of anti semitism in the usa army. being a past soldier myself and liberating dachau, i have also seen and heard slurs about the jews that were laying flat and dead on the ground in that camp. some of the american soldiers in my division, a few, were not only vocal re the jews, but downright disdainful from my memory of the event. so were some of the brits and russian soldiers.
5. This guy wasn't cut out for the army
Bill ,   US   (10.03.08)
Ok first of all you're not allowed to wear a kippa as it goes against uniform regulations. This has been dealt with before. Secondly, is this the only guy in America who hasn't seen Full Metal Jacket to know how officers talk to privates? Army life is supposed to be tough and the soldier who punched him probably didn't appreciate having to serve with a guy who is so sensitive.
6. Any bureaucracy will deny discrimination [end]
SL ,   NY   (10.03.08)
7. You don't leave your kipot behind when you sign up.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (10.03.08)
8. #2 : how can u be so stupid ? have u a secret ?
(10.03.08)
9. actually ... kippot allowed in US army
AT   (10.03.08)
Congress passed a specific permission for this, stemming from the Goldman case.
10. Be Patient
Shimon ,   Cincinnati, USA   (10.03.08)
Wait for the investigation to end, and get an interview with the soldier in question before flaming the entire Army, etc. I have no doubts that something happened, but we really don't know just what, yet. Until there are some facts, it really serves no purpose to rant.
11. I am a US Army officer
jp ,   NJ, USA   (10.03.08)
1) You are allowed to wear a kippa 2) Officers don't talk to privates, Sergeants do 3) There is a lot of anti-semitism in the US Army, much more than ever 4) There are many KKK serving now
12. Descrimination at Fort Benning
Kathleen J. Long ,   Bloomsburg,USA   (10.03.08)
I subscribe to the Southern Poverty Law Center Newsletter and the army and armed forces does have a problem, there are quite a group of skinheads in each arm. The best way besides legal measures for a Jewish person to try and stop this mind set is to teach that without the Old Testament there would be no Bible and that the christians should respect that. It might take the heat off if you tell them, Jesus studied the Torah and Holy Scriptures just like you do. Just a little help from a Jewish girl who has been through similar situations as a civilian.
13. i think micheal should go home to mommy
JL ,   israel   (10.03.08)
14. DoD Directive 1300.17
Jonathan Wortman ,   Raanana   (10.04.08)
The Department of Defense Directive 1300.17 allows the use of religious garment and even mention kippot (uses the word yarmulke as in the article) and limit it in certain ocasions (of which the dining hall is not one of them). This directive also limits the use of religious garment in various ways and for various reasons (e.g., uniformity, interference with duties). And establishes the procedure for decisions of religious accomodations. There are several places in the military (US) that this soldier could go with his complain.
15. Bush US army recruiting bottom of the barrell.
naro ,   nyc   (10.04.08)
The US army under Bush is so desperate for recruits that they are taking everybody, including racists, criminals, and psychopaths. They are bribing then with big cash bonuses of up to $40,000 dollars.
16. Jews in the U.S. Army
Ephraim ,   Atlanta, Georgia   (10.04.08)
I served in the U.S. Army in 1982-1986 and it was the best experience of my life. Everyone knew I was Jewish and it didn't make a bit of difference to most of them. Yes, i heard nasty comments directed towards me at times, but that was rare. I hope most people reading this article realize that what happened to Pvt. Handman is wrong and must be dealt with appropriately. At the same time, it is important to remember that this is an isolated incident and this is not common. Jews hatred in the army is no more prevelent than anti black or anti hispanic sentiments. Unfortunately this is the reality of any society and the military that represents it.
17. why does anyone even bother
jerome ,   basalt co.   (10.04.08)
with #2 the un-observer?!?!?! He's a Baffoon!!! yes I capitolized the B in Baffoon.
18. Oh Please
Thundercloud65 ,   Oklahoma City USA   (10.04.08)
The US DOD is intolerant to religious intolerance of any kind. This kid probably mouthed off to somebody and got his butt kicked and now is waving his religious card and boo hooing. Best he get out of the Army before he's asked to earn his paycheck and then pleads "conscientious objector." pffft!
19. Jewish soldier beaten
bill levy ,   ormond beach USA   (10.04.08)
Of course he was beaten for being a Jew. Conscripts in the army today are the closest things to professional thugs or criminals. The sergeant who made a anti-Jew slur should be discharged, lose his pension and be sentence to ten years in Leavenworth prison. The soldiers involved should join him after being dishonorably discharged and be given five years in prison. Jews have to be strong, not weak. American Jews don't know how many Jews won the Congressional Medal of Honor-18 since the Civil War. This should not be swept under the rug by the typical Jewish organizations like the ADL who are terrified of any publicity. Cowards only fear strength and we Jews should be strong and proud and make our enemies fear us.
20. He wore a Yamuka
Laila ,   Montreal, Canada   (10.04.08)
Article does not mention he wore a Yamuka. What would one expect in the intolerant US Army where gays and people different are persecuted.
21. Wait a second
Gentile ,   USA   (10.04.08)
Don't take this the wrong way, please. But if a Jewish man wants to serve in the army, shouldn't he serve in the Israeli army protecting the land that God gave him? I'm proud that he would want to serve for me. And I appreciate that he loves America more than I did at his age. Praise God for men like this. But, it seems to me that God has called the Jews home, and, not to minimize this soldier's decision, but a Jewish soldier's place is in the defense of God's country. America was graced by God, but this is not the homeland that God gave Jews, as much as I welcome Jews as fellow Americans for as long as they choose to be so. Perhaps evil incidents like this are allowed to happen to confirm God's plans for the Jewish people. There is no America in Biblical prophecy, but Israel has a glorious future. Forgive me if my words offend. They are not intended to.
22. Kathleen # 12
Bill H. ,   Oregon, USA   (10.03.08)
It's hard to understand why so many people who think of themselves as Christians are unkind to Jews and treat them so terribly. If they had any sense they would understand that Jesus himself is a Jew and the Bible makes it quite clear that the Jews are God's chosen people.
23. Same old story
Jackie ,   Florida   (10.04.08)
My father served in WW1 and faced similar antisemitism from his supposed buddies, even on the front in France. It's all in his diary which I have. I guess things never change
24. We have our own country now
Daniel ,   Netanya   (10.04.08)
This guy needs to be informed that we have our own country now with an army that is fighting a war of survival, not wars for oil!
25. Do not ignore anti-Semitism.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (10.04.08)
Do not ignore the hate of Jews : you know where it starts, you never know how and when it stops as, explained at : http://xrl.us/kw6hh
26. Let's see: what would have happened if the guy was Muslim?
The Doc ,   Haifa, Israel   (10.04.08)
- burning of US embassies? - revolt of US Muslims maybe burning Churches? - high treason commited by Muslim soldiers in the name of Islam? - 1 Million Muslims march incited by Farakkhan? - anti-American incitement in US Mosques? - anti-American rallies at US Universities headed by "Islamic Studies" faculty staff and students? That American soldier must be a veritable "hero" for hitting a Jew and not a Muslim. It is easier to hit a Jew since it is known that nothing of the above would happen... and besides - everybody applauds - the Islamo-Leftists, the Anarchists, the Liberals, the Muslims and the Nazis! Nice friends you have there GI Joe! You must be feeling really proud of yourself!
27. #s 9, 11
Bill   (10.04.08)
9. The Goldman case was what I was thinking of too but I thought I remembered him losing. After all, if an enlisted man wants to grow dreadlocks, why shouldn't he be allowed if he converts to Rastafarianism? 11. My mistake. I thought everything above PFC made one an officer.
28. 18 Thunderclound65, THERE YOU GO AGAIN. Making assumptions
Stewart ,   U.S.A.   (10.04.08)
and unwarranted allegations before you researched the facts or waited for the results of the investigation. If you haven't bothered to read my last critique of your ill informed, rash comments; I suggest you get involved in Native American Indian politics. There are plenty of reservations in Oklahoma where you are from. At least you will be closer to what is going on. That should make it less of an effort to find out what's really going on. P.S. Don't even bother with one of your condecending, "My dear friend ... " replies.
29. Treating chosen people an unchosen way?Discrimination!
Tayfun_Turkey ,   Istanbul   (10.04.08)
