"character witnesses" do not speak to an accused's guilt or innnocence. clearly, mk porush has nothing to offer on the question of whether mr valas did or did not shake his baby son to death. rather, character witnesses attest to the person's background, presumably to obtain a lighter sentence. but is being a "wonderful yeshiva student" a license to commit murder? perhaps the court will see fit to judge and sentence him just as it would any other accused, but consider putting him in an especially nice cell to serve out his time? the torah itself says: "lo taqir panim b'mishpat" (you shall not judge based on who the person is). how sad to see that even prominent rabbis need to be reminded of this.
