3. What a self-hating fool
Shalom   (11.04.08)
How can she be "ultra-orthadox", yet belong to Meretz - it's an axymoron. If anyone looks at her in anger it's for being such a fool, not for being a Politician (although anyone who gets involved in that needs their heads examining). It reminds me of the "token Jew" in the Iranian parliament, or worse; as if Meretz are saying - look at us, we like Chareidim; we even have them in our party. Yuck!
4. Who is the man in the picture?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (11.04.08)
5. #3 You are the ignorant fool
David ,   Los Angeles   (11.04.08)
If you had even a teeny-tiny bit of intelligence, you would understand that being "ultra-Orthodox" is not the same as believing that the State of Israel should use its power to force everyone to be religious, nor with being politically right-wing. Perhaps you never thought of that, as your mind is clearly too occupied with hate and anger.
6. Ultra-Orthodox prefer atheist Meretz to Zionism?
Jake   (11.04.08)
It never ceases to amaze me how rabbinical Judaism has, for the most part, fought tooth and nail against Jewish Sovereignty in Eretz Israel since the Hashmonaim and even since Nebuchadnezzar. When the Jews were exiled to Babylon, the sages tried to keep there in the Exile. The first Zionists who tried to bring them back to Jerusalem were in fact the Persian kings Cyrus and Darius. When Jerusalem and the 2nd Temple were burning, the Rabbis cut a deal with Vespasian: The undermining of Jewish sovereignty and the formal submission of Judaea to Rome, in exchange for "Yavne and its sages." When the last pagan Emperor of Rome, Julian, offered the Jews Jerusalem with a rebuilt Temple, the sages rebuffed him. In modern times, Rav Kook, the harbinger of modern religious Zionism, was lambasted with furious opposition by the rabbinical establishment.
7. She(?) looks like an Israeli version of Mrs. Doubtfire
Jake   (11.04.08)
8. Why is the Geneva initiative an acheivement?
JPS ,   Efrat   (11.04.08)
Meretz is on the verge of disappearing from the Knesset. Why? Because the Israeli public is fed up with the Meretz obsession of giving the Palestinians a terrorist state at any price. There is not a single Meretz member or MK who can stand up today and show us a Palestinian map that shows a two-state solution. The maps do not exist, while Israel has dozens of versions of maps with peace treaty scenarios. Why is there no Palestinian map? Because the Palestinians do NOT believe in peace alongside Israel. Their equation is to use the 2-state solution as a stepping stone to a single state solution, that state being Palestine. The Israeli public has figured it out, but Meretz still hasn't. That's why come February 13, they'll be lucky to have 3 members.
9. Sad story
Ilan ,   Ariel   (11.04.08)
Perhaps this is accurate in saying her 'achievements are signing the Geneva accord' . Giving her a degree was a nice touch then again, Yuli Tamir also has a PhD in Philosophy. Great degree if you don't have anything concrete you can do.
10. Cangrats, best wishes
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (11.04.08)
BTW some hareidim are still against the state, so this paired with Merets antizionism go pretty well. I doubt she will get worse than Beilin, I wonder if anyone could get worse than him I have the feeling she will do well
11. #5. Don't congratulate yourself, David.
Jake   (11.04.08)
Leftism may be experiencing somewhat of an Indian Summer in the United States, mostly in response to Bush's reverse Midas touch: Everything he touched turned to sh**t. But people will come round to their senses when they realize that Obama, who is likely to be the inheritor of all that sh**t from the Bush years, will also cause all the toilets to collectively block and the sewage system to shut down. As for Leftism in Israel, there has never been a more convincing experimental demonstration of the validity of Murphy's Law.
12. haredi woman in Knesset
luisa ,   spain   (11.04.08)
only men adding their five cents worth to the news story? Do you feel threatened to have a woman in politics? Good for the lady-. I congratulate her- she is a brave woman. You comment on her looks? Shame on you. It is her brains you need in your government- badly!
13. To #12, if she had brains, she would not be in Meretz
Jake   (11.04.08)
After all, even rats have the common sense to abandon a sinking ship.
14. #11 Huh? Who said anything about Obama?
David ,   Los Angeles   (11.04.08)
What on earth are you talking about? What does this have to do with Tzvia Greenfield? And you are ignorant. It was Yavne that saved the Jewish people after the extremist nutcases brought the whole house down. Just like they are trying to do now.
15. New rule: Talk more polite or get your mouth slapped.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (11.04.08)
16. #14. History is written by the victor
Jake   (11.04.08)
or at least by the last man standing. The Talmudic sages, writing long after the fact, depicted ben-Zakkai's deal with the Romans to establish a Rabbinical center in Yavne as the ultimate act of salvation of the Jewish people. However, in real terms, there is nothing honorable about what he did. Even Josephus surrendered to the Romans only after Yodephat had fallen, and his comrades commited mass suicide. In Ben-Zakkai's case, Jerusalem had not yet fallen, and was in fact was slowly starving to death, as the Romans had closed the supply routes. Ben-Zakkai had himself smuggled out of Jerusalem in a coffin, to meet Vespasian and iron out a deal that would establish Pharisaic, i.e. Rabbinical Judaism, as the pre-eminent form of Judaism, at the expense of the other factions which ended up buried in the smouldering ruins of Jerusalem. In exchange, Rabbinical Judaism formally recognized the state of "Judaea Capta": A humiliated, disenfranchised Jewish people, exiled by God for their manifold sins, and beholden to the whims of foreign nations. We went from being a nation of warriors, judges, kings, and prophets to a nation of slaves and stadlans, rabbis and persecuted minorities. We thought this ended in 1948, but apparently this is not so.
17. SHE IS NOT HAREDI
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (11.05.08)
She is Shulamit Aloni in an ugly wig. People, educate yourselves and do a Google search on this disgusting creature. She is not haredi or even Orthodox. Religious Jews want nothing to do with her.
18. First haredi woman in knesset
zalman ,   safed,israel   (11.05.08)
The other haredi members of the knesset should be ashamed of themselves. That meretz should be the first party to have the first female haredi mk,shows that the religious parties have no shame.
19. Jake #16 for Minister of Education
(11.05.08)
20. Good for her , well done
Simon ,   TA the free city   (11.05.08)
I should imagine she is very familiar with the lack of human rights having come from the Charedi background. Good luck, you just got my vote !
21. Woman?
Israel   (11.05.08)
Looks very much like a man to me!!
22. Well done to her.
Talula ,   Israel   (11.05.08)
She's smart and focused and is willing to open her mind. I think that the first bit of reorganizing should be of her wardrobe - following swiftly by a spot of lip gloss. Apart from that, she's OK in my books.
23. #5
Israel   (11.05.08)
You don't live here - so hush down.
