Obama hired Emanuel because Emanuel is very, very good at organizing, is extremely smart, knows the White House and is a close friend of Obama's. He's not meant to appeal to you or to anyone else. Obama can't afford to pick a White House chief of staff simply as a ploy; he needs someone who will get the job done. #1 etc. you simply must believe in conspiracy theories, mustn't you? You're embarrassing yourselves. Rahm Emanuel would NEVER go to work for someone whom he suspected of being a closet anti-Semite or anti-Israel. So maybe you should consider that, stop the conspiracy theory stuff and the whining now, and return to the real world, in which there is bipartisan support for Israel in the USA. Israel is not your proprietary Republican cause, to be used as a rallying cry against Democrats. Israel would have much preferred McCAin. Of course for the great majority of liberal Jews in the States and some in Israel, liberalism is much more important than Israel. This guy and Obama are longtime buddies. What does his selection as White House chief of staff tell you about Obama's views on Israel? And for those of you saying he didn't get a cabinet position, you clearly have no idea how powerful and influential a white house chief of staff is within an administration.

You are only partially correct. This is historically the president's most trusted advisor, and is different with every administration. In some cases, this office is called the co-president. I would argue this will be the case with Obama - they are close, close friends from the same ilk. It will also help, in Obama's mind, win over the Jewish state.
