1. No disrespect intended but .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (11.21.08)
I'd rather see someone like Avigdor Lieberman in the position. Or we could hire John Bolton & make him an honourary Israeli. The hostile UN environment requires a tough, undiplomatic, definitely un-politically correct person.
2. Shes' Perfect - who will attack a nice old lady

4. Kol HaKavod, Dr. Shalev!
Michael ,   Israel   (11.21.08)
Advocate for Truth.
5. #1: I respectfully disagree.
Matt C ,   Canada   (11.21.08)
Avigdor Lieberman is a great politician from what I know of him, he is a man willing to say things that are not politically correct, thereby provoking debate about issues that have been avoided but are still important. He is also very forthright. However, I do not believe his rash style would be best for Israel as a diplomat; he makes a far better politician than I think he would a diplomat. Professor Gabriela Shalev seems to be doing fine from what I know, she is not afraid to speak out bluntly when needed, but is also being diplomatic in her dealings. I wish her luck in the future.
6. UN
colin   (11.21.08)
Professor Shalav has nothing to fear She must continue to shout the truth to all the anti semetic Israeli bashers. They are showing thier jealousy and sprout many lies hoping to be recorded in the media.Professor Shalav has a ungrateful position and will give Israel the praise in the unUN which is a split arab african bunch of ignoramouses.Let her voice be loud and clear Some will listen
7. KOl HaKavod Dr. Shalev?
David   (11.21.08)
An advocate for invisibility. They vote against us in public and occasionally say a few nice words to Dr. Shalev in private. So how does she defend Israel?
8. #1 - you catch more flies
Yael ,   Tel Aviv   (11.21.08)
As my mother was fond of saying, "you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar."
9. #1 tough yes, racist no
Avinoam ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.21.08)
An ambassador should be should be unapologetic, basically the opposite of Yossi Beilin. But also presentable and impervious to criticism. Someone like Avigdor Lieberman would reflect poorly on our country, and would push away representatives of countries on the fence.
10. The UN is right
Ephraim ,   NYC/Kfar Tapuah   (11.21.08)
Israel 100% deserves the treatment it gets. It should give away more land, weaken its army further, protect its citizens from enemy terrorists less, ruin its economy completely, and eventually perish. Jews have no right to have a country, or to be strong. Only when Jews are weak and downtrodden, like they were for the last few thousand years, do they deserve gentile love and pity. But strong, proud, self-determined Jews are the enemy of the free world.
11. Who blinked first?
Steve ,   US   (11.21.08)
Let me attempt to underdand this. A vicious Jew-hater, General Assembly President Brockmann, runs to embrace the genocidal president of Iran after he told the UN Gen. Assembly, the Jews are the root of all evil in the earth. These two are indeed enemies of Israel. Sometimes the truth hurts. Jews should never apologize nor seek rapprochement with our enemies for stating the truth. Brockman boasted to an Italian newspaper that he had met with all the 191 UN ambassadors, "apart from the Israeli one," i.e., the Jew. Dr. Shalev subsequently asks for a meeting with the Jew-hating General Assembly president in order to straighten things out. "I was pretty happy it ended nicely," Shalev concludes. "I didn't come to the UN to fight." OK. Who blinked?
12. SHE SOUNDS GOOD,LIKE SHE SAID,DOUBLE SPEAK??? TO US ??

13. #1 - non-taken, but what is obvious...
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (11.21.08)
is that you didn't read or comprehend the freakin' article. This lady is the "tough, undiplomatic, definitely un-politically correct person" you claim you want.
14. The UN is a toilet...I admire this woman for her guts....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (11.21.08)
and her stronge voice for us.
15. Dear Mrs.Shalev,
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (11.21.08)
Please, start putting your mouth in the mouth of the trombone and start blowing ,with full strength ,the idea of TRANFER! The world is too big ;there is space for everybody to be happy. Be offensive in your ideas.OFFENSIVE! It is a loosing of time rebuffing evil;start spreading ,out loud ,GOODNESS.It will be finally heard. Of course the idea of goodness do not exclude the use of force(military strength)when needed(now is overdue the time of this need),but the right and new idea ,which is the implementation of sanity, must be sowed. Even in the case of war,the remnants should be sent out and the cure of this madness must be DEFINITIVE!
16. A little bit of honey, no matter how thinly spread
vicky ,   Ashkelon Israel   (11.21.08)
Is better than a large amount of bitter herbs. It takes a woman to be diplomatic, men have obviously failed to get our point across. Most of the countries (i.e. Arab) and Spanish, have been fed bitter herbs all their lives, did you expect that being in the UN would make it turn to honey. for 2000 years we have been treated like sh't by the rest of the world. Its about time we stood firm and stood alone. Come out of the UN and align ourselves with countries that are also treated badly, such as Tiawan who has done better out, so why cant we. That means, they do not have access to our technology, experience in agriculture, etc, etc, lets then see who really supports us?
17. No,Terry, it requires an extremely tough
(11.21.08)
Israeli diplomat and an extremely diplomatic one at the same time.
18. Andy & others .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (11.21.08)
The UN is a swamp - scum comes to mind. It is what it's members are - and most of them are not very nice. It is not a benign international organization, a world-gov't. in the making, a force for good, etc. It is basically a collection of lousy dictatorships run by scumbag bureaucrats. A cesspool. The UN will never be impartial, objective, or fair - it can only be what it's member states are. In such an environment, our only asset is the US with a veto on the UN Security Council. But in the General Assembly, the deck is stacked against us. We can never win. Which is why I made the comment I made. I'm not discounting a certain amount of diplomacy, obviously. But an Israeli representative who accepts any part of the Arab narrative automatically puts us on the losing side of any debate. The vaguest hint of concessions is like an admission of guilt & talk of peace nothing but an admission of weakness. The UN hates the light of truth - it is based on lies & excuses & cover-ups. Our best weapon is exposure & ridicule of it's positions. This won't make us popular but in the circumstances, I can't see that we have much to lose. So, that's my opinion. Shabbat Shalom.

Apparently you are too young to understand the power of a post-menopausal woman - and I mean that in the most complimentary way to post-menopausal women! Totally empowering time in a woman's life!
20. Now, you are right on target, Terry.
(11.21.08)
Shabat shalom to you,too.
21. My Heart bleeds..
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (11.21.08)
For any diplomat representing a country as duplicitous as Israel. Perhaps it is not you they hate but your policies.
22. I dont understand diplomacy and politics
David ,   Boston, USA   (11.21.08)
When people die as a result of the hatred the GA sends at Israel I see no justification for the UN to exist. IF they really feel that way in private, it needs to be made public. Reality is what matters. People live and die from it.
23. U.N. A STAGE FOR ETHNOCENTRIC EXTREMIST EXPRESSION
dp   (11.21.08)
at the U.N., you can do & say what you want and no one will take you seriously b/c everyone is a zealot, it's more of a meeting place where the less powerful extremists can express their grievances about why they are not in the position of the ruling class and are forced to be subordinates
24. The UNO.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (11.21.08)
Arab murderers should not be put on the same footing as Israeli victims. The UNO and the Security Concil members should know that there are never good excuses for murder : ignoring the murder is the equivalent of complicity. It is the duty of every State, not only Israel, to defend its citizens – Its absolute duty. Condemning Israel doesn’t bring solutions. Only a clear, fair and objective approach of the painful Israelo-Arab problem will have a chance to solve it as explained at : http://xrl.us/bi5c8
25. hypocrisy ?
albert ,   new york, usa   (11.21.08)
No hypocrisy there. They genuinely hate Israel and the jews.
26. Pot calling kettle black
Grisha ,   Brooklyn, USA   (11.21.08)
That's a trip. Caliing the UN hostile hypocrites? That's the Israeli government. Murder they call self-defense. Theft they say we owned it 10,000 years ago, so it is ours. Beating the hell out of kids, they say it is necessary.
27. The Day Will Come
Peace Bros ,   Embra Alba   (11.21.08)
