this article is poorly reasoned. to understand the attack in mumbai, it is not necessary to recite every terrorist pronouncement back to the vietnam war. instead, it is more than sufficient to review al-qaeda's track record since the embassy bombings in africa. al-qaeda's attacks have used many similar features, namely multiple groups attacking simultaneously, the targeting of civilians, theatricality, and the expendability of its operatives. but a rapid reaction force, as mr altman proposes, is futile: they could never deploy in time when the target is any westernized city anywhere on earth. and extensive security measures, premised on the last known attack, merely add to the economic damage inflicted, as we have seen in america and europe. but al-qaeda has rarely struck twice with the same methods. instead, the response should be to publicly and loudly condemn the barbarity of the attackers (but NOT bemoan the magnitude of the damage), and to promise vengeance, in the language of the islamists. this needs to be coupled with diplomatic and political pressures to make the jihadists international pariahs, as war criminals and barbarians, to take away their safe havens. and with military action, as in the case of afganistan, against al-qaeda's achilles heel: the large training bases needed to prepare their terrorists and their communications, used to recruit and coordinate their operatives. propaganda, targeting their callousness in killing innocents as well as their own people, could turn off their recruitment and support in the moslem world. but it all starts with clear-headed analysis.

Yes lives were lost but all the facts seem to point out that most of fatalities were caused in the actual terror attacks and not during the rescue. A point worth noting is that today the resignation of India's Minister of the Interior was announced because of allegations of incompetency in the country's security services. Our Prime Minister was totally incompetent as was our Minister of Defense during the Second Lebanon War but it took months for Amir Peretz to resign and Olmert is still the Prime Minster. This really shows that India is a real democracy and Israel is a Mickey Mouse one! Everybody thought it has been ETA because this terrorist organization had tried to commit the same kind of attack. The most recently occasion was on Christmas Eve 2003; and on February 29, a van was intercepted driven by two ETA terrorists, loaded with 560 kilos of explosives. The terrorists had planned to blow up the trains in the same area as the 3/11 bombings were committed. It is true that ETA cannot have destroyed the evidence (the trains were destroyed within 48 hours) and hide the outcome of the analysis of explosives done the very day of the attacks. Neither could Al-Qaeda do it. So who did it?

Hello from Madrid. First of all, I'd like to make an observation to the arcticler, that I found very interesting, and is that there were no suicide bombers in the Madrid attacks. That was a rumour that was sprayed the night after the attacks by the media close to the socialist party, that at last won the election. Autopsies proved that no suicide terrorist died that day. Also, 29 people were judged last year, but only 3 of them were found guilty of the attacks, one of them, an spaniard, born in the north of Spain and catholic.
