The first reference to Jew rather than the more general Hebrew was during the rule of the Persian Empire, after the Kindom of Judah remained the final remnant of the Tribes of Israel. Mordechai ha-Yehudi - the Judean - the Jew. Or did you not realize that Judaism merely means "the faith of the Jewish people"? But what do I bother, eh? in Arabic Hebre means rabbi and Ahbar means rabbis. Abraham is called Khalil (intimate friend of God) corresponding to Hebron, or Hebrew. So the broad term Hebrews fits more the chosen people!
