1. Chanukah?
larry ,   chicago   (12.16.08)
Gosh, I did not know it was Chanukah yet. Well if niffty president Bush, lit the candles with such important dignitaries and singing and pomp, I must get my menorah out from the basement and light it now too!!!
2. Rings kind of hollow .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (12.16.08)
Considering Bush's policies in the Mid-East, I can't help but have a somewhat bitter laugh at this display of friendship. Nonetheless, no one can deny that such an event would only take place in America. It has always impressed me that while we are a small minority in America, our holidays are given public acknowledgement, a tribute to the spirit of what makes America such a great country. This does not happen in Europe. Europe likes to commemorate dead Jews in Holocaust memorials but is much less friendly to live ones. As it happens, the story of Hanukah is most appropriate to our current circumstances.

8. WHAT???
jewish mother ,   Jerusalem   (12.16.08)
It's not Chanukah this week. Did his advisors get it wrong? Were there any representitives from any community who could explain to him that he got the date wrong? Is he celebrating Christmas early too? Can you imagine if, Chalila, he got the date wrong for a Muslim holiday? What a prat!
9. Now Bush does not have to hide he is Jewish anymore.
(12.16.08)
He and Mrs. Bush changed the White House kitchen to a kosher kitchen years ago. He is descended from Joshua and George Bush who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
10. 4 When Jerusalem is divided and the US Embassy moves to
(12.16.08)
Jerusalem and the International Community recognizes the borders of Israel as changed since 1948, that will be the Covenant with Death Daniel in the Bible spoke of that leads to Armageddon seven years later. That is good and bad, depending on whether you live to see the Messiah come and/or are resurrected from the dead as the righteous dead....or are among the eternal dead or those who die of plagues, famine, wars, invasion, etc.
11. still hazy
m ,   jerusalem   (12.16.08)
maybe he lit it with the shoe he almost caught yesterday. biggest tool in the world we should persecute him just for being an idiot lol
12. Will Livni light the Christmas Tree in the Knesset as well?
George ,   N.Y.   (12.16.08)
USA is a Christian country by population, history, national holidays. Since we are a real democracy, we candle a Menorah for the 1.8% American Jews. Does Israel to the same for the 2.5% Israeli Christians (christian arabs and russians)??? No comment...

Lawrence Tendler ,   Safed Israel   (12.16.08)
Not only is it an inappropriate way to treat a friend but the shoe could hit a candle and start a fire...

He knows how to respect an old Flame...
17. THAT's not news.
Gideon Reader   (12.16.08)
If an Israeli journalist threw latkes at the President, and he (the reporter) was shot by the Secret Service,...THAT would be news.
18. Chanukah Comes But Once A Year...
Brana Lobel ,   Israel   (12.16.08)
Yes, he missed the technical date. But Americans, come on...it was probably like having an office Christmas party early. After all this is the country that changed presidents' birthday celebrations so they could happen on Mondays and give everyone long weekends. I think it's great that Bush did this recognition ceremony. So, Americans don't understand Jews. Jews don't understand Jews. We need more Jewish movies, blogs, books, songs etc esp religious ones. I think it's very appropriate that Bush (Esau) chose a Jewish military holiday (albeit with a spiritual foundation) and I think the movie should be made with Harrison Ford as Mattityahu and go on from there.
19. No shoes thrown here?
(12.16.08)
No one courageous enough to throw a shoe at Bush here?
20. Light unto the nations?
Rowan Berkeley ,   London, England   (12.16.08)
Hardly. Every single stream of Jewish thought, whether religious or secular, is continually expressing grave unhappiness, if not outright panic, about the condition of the State of Israel. Not that Bush knows or cares ; his job is to regurgitate the clichés his speech-writers collect for him.
