31. 2 Lawrence: No, it happens all the time in America...
Rivkah   (12.17.08)
The illegal Mexican who stole a truck in Colorado and got drunk in California and switched lanes on a highway, hitting my husband head on a few years ago, demolishing both trucks, has not been deported or charged and is back at work in California as if he is the king of something. Police much prefer file false police reports than to prosecute the guilty who might have mafia associations. Yep. The mafia rules in Israel and America and everywhere else, it appears. The driver in this accident probably had a mafia god-father the police are afraid of.
32. Transportation <inister
David Feigenbaum ,   Netanya, Israel   (12.17.08)
What do we expect. The Transportation Minister allows his driver to drive recklessly because the minister is "late for a meeting".
33. suicidal driving mission ended with a prayer
observer   (12.17.08)
They said: "Just minutes before crash he had an argument with another driver. But, in fact he was reciting his last prayer: "Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha'olam, dayan ha-emet". That doesn't require a Minyan, and even chevra kaddisha is required only for one Jew, the driver!
34. Brian - #18
Kate ,   London, UK   (12.17.08)
From Car-Accidents.com: "There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes." And then we have all those tremendously unselfish deaths by gunshots...
35. tragic !
avi   (12.17.08)
Ok for the driver but FIX THE ROADS. At least some paint !! roads to/around Eilat are all traps !!! Put up rest places, not one on TAV to Jerusalem ! warning signs put where it needs ...
36. Low Israeli Standards
Janet Keno ,   Baltimore   (12.17.08)
Low standards are he reason this happened. Look like bus company will go out of business after the law suits.
37. SUE the bus company
Michael ,   Toronto   (12.17.08)
The bus company should be forced to change its regulations and to pay out a large amount to the dead and the injured. That will teach them. Also, it would serve as a warning to other irresponsible companies.
38. # 18
Sana ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (12.17.08)
Very good point, Brian. That's all it is me-me-me. People here drive like an animals. No rules applied to anyone. And the rest of the life style goes same way: me-me-me. To bad- they are chosen, but don't deserve to be; or they just waiting for another of God"s ponishments....
39. Accident
Vicki ,   Kadima, Israel   (12.17.08)
Firstly, please let me convey my sincere condolences to all of those involved from this horrific accident. Secondly, on driving back from the Dead Sea 2 days ago, I witnissed first hand the appalling driving that was on the road, by both busses and regular drivers. The driving from these people was aggressive and downright dangerous. Many times, cars and busses were overtaking each other without a clear view of what was happening in the other lane. Many times on my journey, I held in my breath as near misses were seen time and again. The attitude on the roads in this country is a JOKE. Coming from the UK, were curtesy and manner prevail, it is always a major wind up to see the behaviour here on our roads. One of the other talkbackers mentioned about hooting when the light are green and you don't set off immediately. I agree, this happens all the time. It is much more sensible to wait a couple of seconds before setting off, as who knows when the driver is really going to stop when the light is red. There is not enough delay between changing of lights, as soon as one light is red, the other is green, which is exceptionally dangerous, another example of the lack of care taken by the powers that be to ensure a safer road. It seems that each driver on this road, is playing out their own personal war, with confrontations and excpetionally poor driving skills on top of that. The overall consensus is that just like the rudeness and impatiences that is prevalent here in normal circumstances (banks, supermarkets etc) spills over onto the roads, where a car is used as a weapon.
40. #23 ThanksTahl, you Summed it up nicely! (re. Brian #18)
Esther ,   Ofarim, Israel   (12.17.08)
Brian is a small minded person. He chooses to see the worst. I have many stories to tell about rude American drivers, but wouldn't consider lumping together all Americans because of a few bad apples. Thanks for setting him straight!
41. #6: Not at all - now his life can be made worse than death
5th generation ,   Israel   (12.17.08)
many, many times over.
42. The road to blame ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.17.08)
after hearing some people in the radio , i can only say that it's easy to blame the road . There are danger signals , no passing signals , speed limits on this road , but people don't care . With the tragic consequences . Due to the topography , it's almost impossible to build a 4 lane road there . Remember this accident that happened some months ago , where three young people lost their life on highway # 1 , a much too high speed involved . And this road has 4 , sometimes more , lanes .
43. 22 convictions?
Talula ,   Israel   (12.17.08)
Whoever gave him his license back after his FIRST conviction, is responsible for this tragedy. Infact ALL those responsible in allowing him to continue driving should be guilt ridden….not to mention fired. For sure there will be a long drawn out dissection of the case, when really, all of this could have been avoided if one half smart person would have taken his license away for good.
44. Mofaz and his elitist friends in the press are hiding info
Sheine   (12.17.08)
What is the driver's name? What is the driver's ethnicity? What is the tour operator's name? What is the bus company's name? In any democracy, these are the immediately relevant questions which would be answered in newspaper articles.
45. Sheine ? no . Miesse ! Yes
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.17.08)
The bus company's boss talked to reshet Beth this morning . But is this so important ? his ethnicity ? don't be racist , we have already enough trouble with such people . You'll better call yourself "miesse"
46. #44 Chances are he's a typical Israeli Jew.
Observer ,   Galut   (12.17.08)
Since everything about this is typically Israeli.
47. 44
Talula ,   Israel   (12.17.08)
You will not be given these details now. There is going to be a criminal investigation, as 25 people died, and the therefore, the name of the driver cannot be given until after all legal proceedings have ended. Well, that's how it works in a normal country, anyway. Besides, why do you want to know the ethnicity? Why does that matter to you?
48. Apparently his name is common knowledge!!!
Talula ,   Israel   (12.17.08)
The bus driver was a 39-year-old named Edward Gelfond from Petah Tikva.
49. #34 - dont be stupid
Adam ,   Raanana   (12.17.08)
You cannot compare the statistics with a ratio of 1:1 as the U.S. has about 40 times the population of Israel.
50. I've said it a thousand times...
Al   (12.17.08)
Brains and israeli Jews dont mix. The Israeli Jew is an aberation in the Jewish nation. Thats what happens when you take religion out of the equation.
51. Adam , 49
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.17.08)
USA Population 40 x Israel Deaths on the road 100 x Result : their death ratio is 2.5 times Israel's .
52. driving in Israel, the U.S. S.Africa etc
Ilana   (12.17.08)
I have lived in all 3 places. Brian is an obvious "Israel didn't work for ME so it is all Israel's fault" case. Drivers in S.A. are not overly polite, to be polite about it, and yes, Israelis are more aggressive, but their environment is not an easy one, it is an aggressive one and there are problems here, true. But where ever or whenever there are problems in the world ranging from economics to antisemitism, most Jews run here. That is the reason why it needs to exist. So, Brian, because you could leave, you did. Many can't, many don't want to, but I would NEVER abandon the ship, sinking or not. Believe me, we could sit all day and compare, Israel this, Israel that, and the same for the U.S.- unless you are a middle class citizen, living in an up part of the city or the suburbs. Don't stray too far- you'll end up in bad places. And if you are not middle class, but lower, life gets really tough. We have enough enemies who are against us, don't join them.
53. To Al
Ilana   (12.17.08)
what a horrible thing to say. You make many ignorant brainless errors in your statement. 1. generalizations 2.Ignoring all the inventions, advancements in technology, medicine, fashion, art and military per capita in Israel is the highest-check itout 3. insults- are usually based on jealousy or hatred or prejudism but one thing is for sure, it is very impolite and I am personnally astounded. Look up Israeili achievements on google and astound yourself. Hereare some: 135 out of every 10,000 workers in Israel are scientists and engineers, compared to the USA, in second place with 85 out of every 10,000 workers. Nine out of every 1,000 workers are engaged in R&D, nearly double the rate of the USA and Japan. Israel has the highest capita of museums in the world Israel is the only country in the world with a net gain in the number of its trees and medicine? oh I have no patience, the list is too long! And same with hi tech. So who needs some more brains?
54. 31 , rivka , again a nice story out of your
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.17.08)
