Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.19.08)
And before it a nice Jewish wedding , with an Orthodox [ a true one ] Rabbi . Why not . The reasons ? First of all , this does'nt has to hurt ANY TRUE Jew . Secondly , what will you answer your son when he will ask : Daddy , why did'nt you make me Jewish ? He can say : why did you do it . An easy answer : we ARE JEWS . Even seculars can have it done . Not being married by Jewish law can give you problems too . Where i lived they did'nt accept non Halachic Jewish children in the , not so Orthodox , Jewish school . When your children want to get married here , you can have problems too if not married Jewish . So in short , it does'nt hurt but avoids problems . And of course , we are Jews , even if Secular as i am .
32. Circumcision is NOT barbaric!
Kim ,   Israel   (12.19.08)
It has been medically proved that it's much healthier for a man to be circumsized. Besides, it looks nicer! There are also a gazillion Muslims who are circumsized, and I hear the Royal family in the UK also do it.
33. paqid + rivkah
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (12.19.08)
in light of #15, the similarities are stunning. both: -are gentiles -like to admonish christians because they are self-proclaimed experts on christianity -are experts on what a real jew is and isn't because they are self-proclaimed experts on judaism -like to talk about their private parts -are self-proclaimed experts on the bible -have serious personal issues -love to talk said issues -give these talkbacks entertainment value a perfect match made in heaven.
34. Who cares what the "reasons" are!
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (12.19.08)
Who the hell are you Tali to take away this mitzvah from ANYONE? Do you crave sex with an uncut man?
35. I dont give a flying F what the seculars
Al   (12.19.08)
think or feel.. In a very few generations they melt like snow in July. Quite frankly I find them worthless
36. #17 Israeli, Israel.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (12.19.08)
I'm not religious, I am what most would call completely secular. I have no religious beliefs - my views & opinions are formed by physics, biology, economics, history, etc. You seem to think, however, that we are only a religion. We are also a people, a nation. As a nation, we have traditions & customs that are a part of our identity. Circumcision is one of them. If we give up every single custom & tradition, who are we? Why are we even here in Israel? I place a high value on Jewish survival as a people. Trying to replace it with some ''secular Israeli identity'' will not work. As secular as I am, I recognize that if all Jews were like me, we would disappear in a few generations. You are confusing your dislike of Haredi Judaism with what it means to be part of the Jewish people. I don't hate our heritage - I want it to continue & grow, adapt to modern life & scientific knowledge. But if we give up every custom & tradition, stop observing our holidays, fail to understand our history, we simply will not survive, not here in Israel & not anywhere else.
37. To rg, #12
Sharon ,   Boston   (12.19.08)
It's not about the link to Judaism you want or don't want to create, but the link the world creates for you. Not being circumcised won't fool the goyim. You're just kidding yourself.
38. BAN THIS GRUESOME AND HEARTLESS ACT
Babies' Rights   (12.19.08)
How many of us love babies? Sweet, cute innocent bundles of happiness and love. Unfortunately, these lovely creatures also lack the ability to protest when crimes and injustices are committed against them. When irreversible and unwanted acts of mutilation are committed against them in the name of cultural norms. All they can do is utter a soft whimper as the knife approaches. It is an unfortunate reality that by the time they have grown into adulthood tyrannical society has brainwashed them to such an extent that they themselves have no qualms about inflicting the same pain upon their own poor, innocent bundle of joy. I speak, of course, of the terrible practice, well-nigh universal in the modern day, of umbilical cord cutting. Ban it now!
39. Terry, I appreciate your points
Israeli ,   Israel   (12.19.08)
But this time I don't agree with you. I don't see why we cant be a Jews living in Israel without actually taking the bible literally. My point is that the story of the bible is not true no matter how you want to look at it and no matter how many 8 day old babies you are going to inflict with unbearable pain, Judaism is still an ancient set of beliefs no better then the Islam or voodoo. Why the Greeks can live in Greece without literally believing their ancient Gods like Zeus etc. The Italians can live in peace in their land without still believing the Roman Gods. And that Terry, can apply to every nation on earth. Modern Egyptians don't worship the pharaohs anymore and no one ask them why they live in Egypt and what make them Egyptians, and so on and so forth No one ask the English why they live in England if they still don't practice paganism. Israel is the only country on earth that asks it citizens to believe in this out of date nonsense or move out. Our belief in this God brought us a lot of unnecessary pain for no real gain and the sooner we realise that the better it would be for us. The bible is a history book and not very accurate at that, we have to accept that. What God said or did is no better no worse then all the other ancient Gods that now belong only in the history books. That's right Mike Moil, God let 6 million die in order to establish the Jewish state of Israel, you are an embarrassment.
40. I like her point
C   (12.19.08)
we did not circumcise because we do not believe and it seemed barbaric. Most of the family was understanding because they do believe and if we don’t, why would we. Instead of taking it as an insult, they took it as a different belief system which can be respected. Also note, that our son went to a Naamat nursery and never had an issue with having a foreskin. He was not the only one.
41. Why not!?
Rickie ,   Porto Alegre - Brazi   (12.19.08)
Who says that man loose sexual sensibility? It's something very private that changes from one to another... It's also valid that an uncircuncised man can be less sensible than an circucised one, too! My mother is jew but not my father. Also, I had no jewish life, but I'm circucised by medical reasons, but I've been always proud about my circuncision. When I spent an year in Israel, I decide for my Bar Mitzvah at the age of 31 and I had the rithual, we did the prays and so on and now - after 11 years - I can say that I'm happier every year about my decision. What I can say, is that I just get scared when my friends says that are still thinking about it when they got a new baby-boy at home...
42. NO, Tali, you have it backwards
5th generation ,   Israel   (12.19.08)
Religious zealots have forgotten what we seculars still appreciate - that it was originally intended as a procedure to safeguard health, and continues to be so even among non-Jews.
43. Terri, #36
m   (12.19.08)
You are an intelligent commentator, so how can you be so blind to the fact that being Jewish for 2500 years didn't depend on customs and traditions? People didn't jump into fire instead of kissing the cross for tradition? No nation has continued for so long on customs and traditions and fleeting modern fads? Now you can see the unravelling of Israel, political and social. The brit is the most important factor in being Jewish, when Jews, Israelis, start questioning it you know you are in trouble. The new religion which built this country, zionism is dead, it held for some 100 years and succeded only because of the Holocaust. How many Jews came to build Israel from the "goldene medine"? No, brit is the last symptom of decay in Israel, just read about Maccabees and Israel at that time, the only problem is that I see no Maccabees anywhere in sight.
44. #13..Is circumcism the only thing holding you together?
Edithann ,   USA   (12.19.08)
Are you doing it just to screw the world ? Is that the only thing you have to 'show' for 3000 years... Just that argument alone is more telling than anything else.. TATA
45. #20..it's not..but it still doesn't make you're point!
Edithann ,   USA   (12.19.08)
But why must you compare? Do 2 wrongs make a right? I'm always amused by that argument..'well if they do it', then I can do it too'...' Let me see, that's usually a 7 year old's logic... Are you 7 years old Mark? TATA
46. Circumcism is contempt for G-d on many levels....
Edithann ,   USA   (12.19.08)
I know you all accept it as a sign of being a member of the tribe.. But is it really? Isn't circumcism defiling G-d's work? Isn't it telling 'Him' he's made a mistake..and you Jews will correct it for him...What's that saying? TATA
47. Not Cutting Is Still Cutting ...
Stuart ,   Michigan USA   (12.19.08)
It is a decision to cut off ties to the Jewish people. It is regrettable and should not be acceptable except in that context.
48. 14 Chaim cont'd: I forgot to tell you why Magog is Russia
Rivkah   (12.19.08)
AND China when previously I thought it was only Russia. As Chancellor of West Germany Konrad Adenaur said long ago, "I reserve for myself the right to be smarter today than I was yesterday." If you order a free booklet entitled "Russia and China in Prophecy" from www.thetrumpet.com, you will learn about a reference book called "Compendium of World History" by Dr. Herman Hoeh, you will find he identifies Meschech and Tubal as fathers of those who comprise greater Russia. Ezekiel chapter 38 lists countries this book more closely identifies in modern terms since names of countries have changed over time. Magog fathered the people of China and Mongolia. Gomer fathered the Cambodians, Siamese, Burmese and Indochinese. Togarmah, son of Gomer, fathered the people of Siberia and Tibet. Gog in the land of Magog is the vast regions of northern Eurasia extending from the Baltic to the Pacific. meshech is Moscow. Tubal is Tobolsk. This is good news to me because others think Gomer is Germany and Togormah is Turkey. Whoever is right, events will unfold this as times goes by. The correct interpreter gets a reward and the incorrect one does not. It is a challenge to go for heavenly rewards, but well worth it IF a person does not deliberately mislead people.
49. Most Israelis aren't Jews
russel ,   tlv   (12.19.08)
a sad fact one learns after living here for a few years. B'H I'm a secular Jew living in Israel
50. Tradition
J from USA   (12.19.08)
"...completely secular. I have no religious beliefs.... " "But if we give up every custom & tradition, stop observing our holidays, fail to understand our history..." I am confused. Is this an oxymoron? From what I understand of circumcision, at one time the Jews were forced out of the Promised Land and forbidden to follow the rules of God, some even choosing to worship idol gods. But the few who knew God's word, wanting to do right by His word, believing, like Moses did, God's word, this was one of the ways Jews were able to show to God they honored His rules; thus, the tradition carries forth even today. Maybe I explained my understanding of the tradition in too simple terms, but it does come down to still choosing to follow what God asked of His people a long long time ago.
51. Men LINE UP for circumcision in Africa
Michael ,   Galut   (12.19.08)

52. 14 Chaim: Do you recall the story of Jonah and Ninevah?
Rivkah   (12.19.08)
Ninevah's judgment was DELAYED for forty years because of REPENTANCE. You say people who warn of coming prophecies are wrong because the events did not take place when expected? Jonah fully expected the destruction of Ninevah in FORTY DAYS and was very disappointed like you when God showed mercy to Ninevah for repenting and delayed judgment for forty years. How do you know that the people who were informed of a likely coming event, delayed its coming by praying about it and repenting of evil so that God delayed the forecast destructions? You sound like a person of little faith in the ability of God's people to connect to God's mercy to delay judgment. Amos the Prophet said God would do nothing except He first tells His servants the prophets. There are many false prophets that upset you, but there are a few real ones. You have to sift through a lot of manure to find the ponies, Ronald Reagan used to say. He knew there were ponies in there somewhere. You don't like sifting through the manure, so I do that for you, looking for ponies. You also have to sift through a lot of coal to find a diamond, but the effort is worth it or it would not be done. I get no paycheck for my research except rewards in heaven some day and a bank on account in heaven to protect me in many ways. I do not believe in a trinity, but those who do are into poly theism which is from Pope Damasus who added the trinity to the teachings of Yeshua the Messiah and added verses into the Bible to mislead people because he was not a Christian. He believed in Mithraism which is a trinity religion with a Sunday sabbath of man, not a Saturday Shabbat of God. People who are genetically Jews but are not Jews in their hearts will not inherit the Promises of God eternally even if they live in Israel now. Christians who are polytheistic and do not become Jews in their hearts will not inherit the Promises of God, either. Yeshua the Messiah said those who love him would obey his commandments which are the written commandments of Moses, not the traditions and oral commandments of men. Mark 7:7 says, "Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." Yeshua was perfect in following the written commandments of Moses, not the oral commandments of men. So some see him as Messiah and some don't.. I am only responsible for myself and I cannot convert or change anyone to my thinking since that is God's department. Many are called but few are chosen, the Bible says. The Bible says RELIGIOUS UNbelievers are children of the devil. That means any religion, pal. If you think your brethren in Israel are religious Unbelievers, you must be God or an angel or a fallen angel or a demon is influencing you because the Bible says only God and the angels know for certain who belongs in God's family. I don't. But God does. You sell short your brethren to lump them into such a category as children of the devil when you do not know the heart of every person there. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am a real Jew in my heart. God chose me, but whether He chose you is not my concern or in the perview of my knowledge.
53. The Left will create a new religious interpretation for Bris
Jake   (12.19.08)
They will say that the ritual act of circumcising the newborn child and removing superfluous flesh symbolizes the need for Israel to amputate and give away parts of Eretz Israel that are "not needed".
54. Even the Romans understood and respected our differences
Jake   (12.19.08)
(apart from Hadrian, who was a boy-lover, practised an extreme form of Hellenism, and wiped Judaea off the map to create Palestine). No doubt, the Romans found our customs and rituals at best quaint and peculiar, and at worst tasteless and mean. No doubt they found circumcision a barbaric practice, and thought that observing the Sabbath was a sign of laziness. However, the Romans respected nations who, like themselves, were well estalished from antiquity, had self-knowledge as a nation with a purpose and a mission, and had an established tradition WRITTEN DOWN to guide them as a people. Naturally, the Greeks were more influential on the Romans culturally. However, Jews were recognized as a nation of great antiquity with strong identity, and Judaism was respected as an esteemed ancient religion with a universal ethical message. Jews, among all the subject peoples, were exempted from worship of the emperor, and from duties that would go against their religion, and taxes collected from Jews were used for the functioning of the Temple in Jerusalem. Why do we feel the need nowadays to ditch all our particularisms, especially one as basic and fundamental as circumcision?
55. #16, You just don't get us.
Jake   (12.19.08)
If you didn't understand what Terry meant, then you don't understand the first thing about Jews, and you have no right to judge us.
56. To #18 Vered
Jake   (12.19.08)
Interesting, I never thought about that. But what did you mean by communal reasons?
57. #38: I see it. It's...it's...a UN RESOLUTION AGAINST ISRAEL
Jake   (12.19.08)
...DEPLORING the practice of genital mutilation in Israel. ...EMPHASIZING the need for Israel to end all barbaric practices against innocent and helpless infants. ...DEMANDING that members of the Security Council create a permanent committee to remain seized of the matter. (This follows a previous UN Resolution REMINDING Israel of its commitments to HALT all military activities, which had resulted in an UNPRECEDENTED environmental catastrophe, notably the recent FLATTENING of the Earth.) Meanwhile, the slicing and dicing of both male and female will continue unabated and ignored in the Moslem world.
58. Monopolizing God
The Doc ,   Haifa, Israel   (12.19.08)
Religion can be a wonderful thing until some pathetic gang hijacks it and decides that it has the unilateral right to interpret "God's Word" and the unique talent and knowledge to actually "understand God's Word", It is well-known that monopolizing God is a time-proven way to control peoples and societies. It is true for Judaism, Christianism, Islam, some modern-day ideologies (where the Party is "God") Fascism, Communism and it may be true for other more esoteric religions. In the name of God we limit freedoms, we justify theft, tyranny, murder and wars and in the name of God we justify laziness and rape. To all those religious fanatics I say: we will resist you and your tyranny. Leave us alone - you live on your side of the street and we live on ours and DO NOT DARE dictate what we can or can't do. Who the heck CARES what YOU think about this or that religious or spiritual matter for as long as you break youer own "laws" by stealing, lying, raping and murdering. You are NOT our role models and you are quite far from having ANY right to dictate how we live our lives, what we eat, how and when we relax and whom we marry.
59. We've lost it
Jason ,   FL   (12.19.08)
Yes our primitive customs kept us unified. Yes our nonsense tribal rituals ensured our existance in a way no other empire survived. Just look around you and see how we are disintegrating as a society, race or religion. This is a direct result of rejecting all that kept us together. Across the southern border a small group of gangs driven by ideology and absolute belief has ammassed such power that no Israeli commander dares to send his soldiers to gaza. We have lost our values, our religion and our human shadow. Now we are heading for the third exile- and the writing was on the wall.
60. Life on the other side is not better
Hannah ,   NY   (12.19.08)
I am a Jewish convert previously lapsed xtian. On Friday I had the washing to look forward to and another night of pubs and clubs. TG I found Judaism instead. Life with a circumsized man is far superior. But more importantly I look forward to every weekend as something special and not just another day. Even secular xtians baptize their children in order for the child to have something to reach for when they need it. A religious brit doesnt harm a child and he can always decide later to be religious or not. But if he has nothing in the first place, in a crisis he has no where to turn. Why so anxious for xmas trees and presents? No one is happy with them anyway.
