1. Why is it always "Despite the ceasefire..."?
Laura ,   Israel   (12.23.08)
THERE IS NO CEASEFIRE. THERE WAS NEVER ANY CEASEFIRE. What part of that do leftist wankers not understand? The bogus "leadership" is this country doesn't give a rat's ass about its citizens under fire. I say put all of the cabinet ministers, Mazuz and a bunch of wanker journos on a boat and ship 'em off for a permanent vacation in Gaza.
2. terms of truce?!
Jennie   (12.23.08)
It appears now as a rule, that the pali terrorist government of chamas ruitenally demending condtions to be honored of Israeli government...And the ciminal Israeli government is taking it seriously, asking other countries to mediate for them....How embarassing !! A government, that was elected to care for their Homeland and their people and for the sovereignity of their country is betraying and humiliating its people by seeking fruitless mediations of other countries to begg for cowardly and fruitless new agreemens with a bunch of murderers ? The palis don't know what a word agreement means, they had never kept one and by now someone in ISrael has to learn quickly, that they never will.

4. yawn..
eliezer ,   jerusalem   (12.23.08)
is there nothing new happening in this country, like a ultra orthodox refusing to serve in the IDG or a father from Tel Aviv caught raping his daughter. Why are you printing boring news. It happened yesterday, it happened all last week, it will happen tomorrow. The government has declared that this is nothing, "halagah", to be exact. so why does Ynet print boring articles like this?
5. terms of truce?!
Richard ,   London UK   (12.23.08)
At approximately 4:50pm on 17 December 2008, the IOF gunships opened heavy machinegun fire towards Qleibo area, eastern Al Sheikh Zayid town, and the Talet Az-Zaitoun area in Jabalia Refugee Camp. The firing lasted for more than 15 minutes spreading panic in the area. Five minutes later, the IOF fired a missile at the former area; however, no injuries were reported. At approximately 8:50pm on the same day, the IOF, stationed on the borderline east of Jabala, launched a ground-to-ground missile that exploded in the house of 47-year-old Salah Abdul-Hadi Oukal. The victim was in his house's garden in Tel Az-Za'tar area in Jabalia when the missile struck him. Oukal, who was the breadwinner of a family of eight; including three children, was blown into pieces as the missile hit him directly. His 7-year-old son, Ahmed, was also lightly injured in the attack, which caused severe damage to the house and partial damage to three adjacent houses. At approximately 5am today, 18 December 2008, Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at the house of Hassan Mohammed Abu Nasser, which is located in a dense neighborhood in Block 8 in Jabalia refugee camp. The target is a simple house roofed with asbestos. Field investigations indicated that the two missiles struck the garage, destroying a Subaru. It also caused damage to the house and several other neighboring houses. In Khan Younis city, south of the Gaza Strip, Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a car-maintenance workshop at approximately 1:15am also today. The workshop, owned by 35-year-old Iyad Fathi Al-Jbour, was completely destroyed. No casualties were reported in this attack; however, seven neighboring houses and three cars were damaged.
6. There was never any ceasefire
(12.23.08)
There are approximately eight million Palestinians in the world today. Over half the entire Palestinian population were expelled from their homes in the 1947-49 Nakba (catastrophe) that followed partition and the creation of the State of Israel. A second wave of Palestinian refugees was created after the 1967 war, when Israel occupied the remainder of Palestine. One million Palestinians whose families were not driven out in 1948 live as second class citizens in the state of Israel. Until now, not a single Palestinian refugee from 1948 nor their families have received a penny of compensation for their forcible dispossession nor have they been allowed to return to their homes. The Palestinians have now experienced forty years of military occupation. The siege by the Israeli army and the economic blockade have devastated their daily lives so that 'normal' life is impossible.
7. #2
Richard ,   London UK   (12.23.08)
'the pali terrorist government ' Compared to israel's Government: Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights in 1967 in contravention of international law. Since then Israel has moved over 410,00 settlers into these occupied territories in contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention (article 49), the Hague Regulations and United Nations Security Council Resolutions. Israel continues to build an illegal apartheid wall inside the West Bank despite the Advisory Ruling of the International Court of Justice in 2005 that the wall is illegal. Fifty five illegal Israeli settlements will be on the Israeli side of the wall separated from the West Bank . Since 2000 Israel has demolished 628 Palestinian houses, home to 3, 983 people, in acts of collective punishment. These demolitions constitute a war crime. In total, since 1967, over 18,000 homes have been demolished for 'military' or 'administrative' reasons.
8. THERE WERE ONLY 5 - WHY THE WHINING AGAIN?
MK Vilnai ,   Tel Aviv   (12.23.08)
9. Re 5. term of truce
Ken ,   Johannesburg   (12.23.08)
Richard from London has done a copy & paste from the electronicintifada website. It's fictitious and should be removed from a publication like ynetnews!
10. Where is Olmert, Barak and Livni?
Brod ,   USA   (12.23.08)
With more rocket attacks on Israel by the Iranian led and armed Islamist-Jihadists in Hamastan, are the Leftist leaders hiding under their beds? It is time for Israel to have new leadership now. Likud should take over the government as the Leftist government has failed to governed. Israel population centers are being rained, attacked and terrorized by barrages of Islamist0-Jihadist rocket attacks. And the Leftist government is doing nothing to protect and defend the country from external attacks. It is time the nation calls for them to step now and appoint Likud and the Right-Wing Parties as their next government. This is a national emergency!
11. lull
Ilana   (12.23.08)
I guess a "lull" has different meanings to each side. To the Arabs it means "hey we will fire less missiles at the civilian population, but we can do it while kids are on their way to school. Hopefully we can kill some. And then when the Israelis close border pass throughs we can say that they don;t keep the cease fire!!" To Israelis a lull means, "well I guess it will give the kids some peace of mind. They can stop wettingbeds and learn to talk better as their speech is one of theeffected areas as a result of living under constant fire. Even though the arabs will use this time to sneak in more missiles, not food or medicine mind you, plan and prepare for the "end" of the lull. Lull humph!
12. Do not fight with one hand chained behind your back.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (12.23.08)
The failure of Israel and the United States, as well as Europe, to see that the world is in a state of war is ignorized by the seasonal birth of “peace initiatives.” That Israel has convinced itself that “peace is an option,” even “the only option,” in spite of the fact that its enemies are actively engaged in preparing its destruction, is one of the astonishing phenomena of our times. The Arabs read the signs coming from Israel correctly, and act accordingly. On the one hand, they are arming themselves to the teeth and preparing for war and, on the other hand, they talk “peace” and occasionally release “peace plans,” which aim at turning Israel into an indefensible narrow strip of land that can be conquered in a single attack. We should have the courage to face reality. We should go to war and fight with one single goal – a total victory on the terrorists. We will have to fight in order to rebuild our deterrence. We will have to fight for our survival. The medias should be kept away from the battlefield until the army has finished its job. The civilians collaborating with the terrorists, the “human shields”, should be treated as soldiers without uniforms. The war should be short and cruel to the enemy. Victory is at that price as explained at : http://xrl.us/biz8x
13. Lull
Richard ,   London UK   (12.23.08)
4,269 Palestinians have been killed as a direct result of Israeli military actions and 29, 456 injured during the current upraising which began in September 2000.
14. Dear Richard,
larry ,   chicago   (12.23.08)
It seems that you have your news down to almost exact, at almost 8:05, what are your source that the IOF fired a rocket? How can we know that perhaps a clumsy Hamas activist missed with his own missile? Come now, please let us in on your ALMOST exact facts>

16. terror
terror   (12.23.08)
I am pleased to hear that so many terrorists were killed!! Imagine if they weren't! For each terrorist at least a few Israelis would have been killed and imagine that number! I don't even want to consider it!! Israel should continue getting ridof murderers!! As should the world. Islam will be the end of the world if their moderates don't take charge!!
17. deaths
Eve   (12.23.08)
I am SURE that most of those deaths are staged, like the recent one in the papers- all of a sudden a dead palestinan was found alive after a few years! LOL!! And those that weren't are mostly terrorists or accidnets caused by themselves of hamas throwing non supporters out the window and shooting at them on their way down. Be careful with stats! Internet can give you the run down of these deaths. We ain't stupid Richie!
18. deaths
Richard ,   London UK   (12.23.08)
From the beginning of the intifada on 29 September 2000, until 31 December 2007, 4,332 Palestinians were killed in the Occupied Territories. Among them were 865 minors (under the age of 18). At least 2,050 of those killed WERE NOT participating in the fighting at the time of death, and 225 were objects of targeted killing. Thousands more were wounded. During 2007, Israeli security forces killed 377 Palestinians, 53 of them minors. 84 were from the West Bank and 293 from the Gaza Strip. In comparison, in 2006, the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli security forces was 657: 523 from the Gaza Strip and 134 from the West Bank, among them 140 minors. Of those killed in 2007, at least 132 (about 35 percent) were CIVILIANS who were not taking part in the hostilities at the time they were killed. B'Tselem has been unable to determine the cause of death of 50 persons (about 13 percent). In 2006, 348 Palestinians were killed when not taking a direct part in the hostilities at the time of death, representing 54 percent of Palestinians killed that year by Israeli security forces.
19. statistics
Ilana   (12.23.08)
These stats include the suicide bombers themselves. those killed by accidents while making rockets, bombs, etc, or those killed just before or just after firing missiles. This is exactly why when comparing the number of women or children casualties, a very small percent of them are women or children and these are also in the building when a makeshift bomb maker makes a mistake... Compare those stats to the number of women and children civilians in Israel and the whole story suddenly unblurs really fast. Always check what is behind statistics, who publishes them, from when to when, and who were really innocent civilians, of course. I am glad that most readers are smart enought to know this, at least here in Israel and on ynet. Educate yourselves, read info from both sides.
20. statistics - be very aware
anon   (12.23.08)
quoted because I can also cut and paste!! Yay!! I am sooo smart now!! And honest... "The B'tselem spokesperson made it clear that almost all Palestinian casualties are defined as civilians, even if that civilian was armed at the time of his death. B'tselem defines all members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad as civilians. In the international realm, the term "civilian" connotes "innocent". Such a broad based definition of a "civilian" is problematic for the Israeli army, which copes with accusations that it kills or injures civilians when, in fact, terrorists don civilian clothes and take refuge among civilians as a matter of policy. B'tselem does say that Palestinians commit a war crime when they fire missiles from civilian neighborhoods, which target civilians. However, the B'tselem spokesperson made it clear that this did not justify Israeli attacks on the civilian safe havens that the terrorists use for cover. B'tselem also claims that the Israeli army breaches rules on proportionality when it does defend itself.. To whom is B'tselem accountable? Above all, to its funders. B'tselem is funded by private contributors, along with the British government and by the European Union, using these funds to demonize Israel worldwide as an abuser of human rights, while relying on a tendentious and questionable investigation process.
