looking from outside israel at israeli gov policy is sadly comical American president Theodore Roosevelt said speak softly and carry a big stick israeli policy seems to be speak speak an speak some more
65. your article
Samar ,   Amman   (12.26.08)
It"s a great analytical article, I like it, but sorry to tell you, your recipe will not work, its the nature of things,
66. this article is very bias but has a point
Ariel ,   Australia   (12.26.08)
but they say that every great civalization is not destroyed by its enemy until it has destroyed itself. Lets hope that I am wrong.
67. it's the Refuseniks Reservists
observer   (12.26.08)
“We, reserve officers and soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)….have always served in the front lines….were first to carry out any mission, light or heavy, (and we did it) to protect the State of Israel and strengthen it. We….served….long weeks every year, in spite of dear cost to our personal lives, have been on reserve duty all over the Occupied Territories, and were issued commands and directives that had nothing to do with the security of our country (but were only given to perpetuate) our control over the Palestinian people. We(’ve)….seen the bloody toll this Occupation exacts from both sides. ….the commands issued to us in the Territories (have) destroy(ed) all the values (we learned) growing up in this country. ….the (way) the Occupation (undermines the) IDF’s human character and (exposes) the corruption of the entire Israeli society. We….know that the Territories are not Israel, and that all settlements are bound to be evacuated in the end. We hereby declare that we shall not continue to fight this War of the Settlements. We shall not continue to fight beyond the 1967 borders to dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people. We hereby declare that we shall continue serving the Israel Defense Forces in any mission that serves Israel’s defense. The missions of occupation and oppression do not serve this purpose - and we shall take no part in them.
68. not like the old golden days wars
observer   (12.26.08)
the top 15 economies in the world are digging in to preserve their stake in the massive U.S. military budget. With the country in deep recession and resources dwindling for the new administration’s programs on health care, education, and the environment, the outcome of this battle may well end up defining the next four years. “you will just get mowed down by the defense industry.” The Umbilical Cord used to nurse Israel in the old golden days wars, with arms and ammunition, would be at least strangulated.
69. SOLUTION: JUST SEND KASSAMS BACK TO THEM, NOT OUR CHILDREN!
ED ,   USA   (12.26.08)
SEND THEM BACK 2 KASSAM ROCKETS (FOR EVERY ONE THEY SEND US), RIGHT INTO THEIR CIVILIAN AREAS - SEND THE ROCKETS, NOT OUR CHILDREN TO LOSE THEIR LIVES WHEN NO HUGE THREAT IS IMMEDIATELY FACED. TWO EYES FOR AN EYE. IF WE ARREST HAMAS TERROR LEADERS- IMMEDIATELY APPLY SHARIAH LAW- CUT THEIR HANDS OFF AND POST THE PICTURES ON AL JAZEERA AND AL ARABYA. DO IT. USE THEIR TACTICS & YOU'LL GET RESULTS.
70. No Longer the People's Army
Yvonne Sheccoury ,   Netanya   (12.26.08)
I agree wholeheartly with Guy Bechor article, Israel's mothers' do not want to have there son's injured or killed or even kidnapped! in Israeli society today, they want their children having an education and to get on with their lives, like everywhere else around the world. But deep down I miss the patriotism we cherished and the respect that we bestowed upon the IDF to protect us.... what has happened to our comradeship and togetherness!
71. 5
(12.26.08)
Absolutely correct, but how can this unfortunate and dangerous trend be reversed in over-legalised society where attorney-general is All Mighty, and self-hating do-gooders are the screaming minority against silent majority?
72. 6
(12.26.08)
Could not be wiser and more logical! I wish it could be put in practice. Maybe if and when the situation hits the bottom, and the only way to survive is climbing up the hole, even impotent government will declare emergency situation, under which these steps will be taken. Halevai!
73. 7
Rosie ,   Israel   (12.26.08)
Barak is the one that established the infamous Or committee that put good policemen who did their job and protected innocent civilians from stone hailing mobs, risking their own lives, on trial. What do you expect?
74. Hamas delibretaly challenge for IDF operation
Tayfun_Turkey ,   Istanbul   (12.26.08)
Hamas aims to challenge IDF for a Gaza operation to give lesson to IDF Hamas was encouraged by Hizbullah's Lebonan victory and Israeli failure. If hamas can do the same and IDF lost against hamas or at least hamas can survice from gaza operation, hamas will eventually have an upper hand in negotiations As for Israeli killer instinct :you are stil bloody infant killers, do not bother you do not lose anything from your zionism!
75. #59 You Are So Right: Well Said
Lawrence ,   Safed Israel   (12.26.08)
The people of Israel are willing to defend the country, the leaders feel differently.
76. We Jews aren't supposed to have a 'killer instinct'
Karen R ,   USA   (12.26.08)
We're not samurai, nor yet Roman legionaries. Golda Meir said the thing that distressed her most about the constant state of war was that it "forced Jewish boys to become killers." We never fought except in self-defense or as a war commanded by Hashem. We are supposed to be rachamim b'nei rachamim - merciful ones the children of merciful ones - not "killers" inspired by gangster movies and macho goyim. When we start glorifying our "killer instincts" we stop being Jews - and you'd better believe that the One Above will notice - to our grief.
77. IDF is always victorious...
Hansje   (12.26.08)
in Gaza and was also in Lebanon 2006, see the latest american report on that war, occupying vast portions of Lebanon up to the Litani in only 24 hours of combat, killing almost the half of the Hez.fighters. And she was always victorious in any kind of engagement in Gaza, even recently. This article is pure BS! It's a total denial of the strenght of the IDF. IDF are no 'killers'. They defend their country with bravour, when ordered to defend. They must get an order to fight and unless there isn't such an order, they cannot show their strenght. Even in Entebbe, the planes were already in the air while the politicians debated if they should do the action. It's nothing new.
78. The Left has emasculated our nation
Rachel ,   Negev   (12.26.08)
The steady erosion of discipline in our armed forces could be seen in the First Lebanon war when the Left, only recently voted out of power in 1977, reacted with the same kind of infantile temper tantrum that they have been exhibiting ever since. What has Oslo and our surrender of Gaza brought us? More danger, closer danger and a generation of young people who SMS their mommies as soon as they get two feet into Lebanon. It has to stop, NOW. The only answer is very tough military discipline. Nothing can be done with the press or what passes for leadership in this country but the IDF can turn the tide among its own ranks.
79. #49, did our spokesman really say that?
Danny   (12.27.08)
If so I want to buy him a drink. All I heard after Qana was whinny, hand-wringing apologetics. Here the guy said it like it was. Lebanon 2006 was an Orwellian dream, Hizbollah fired 4,000 rockets of which ONE hit a military target and somehow it was ISRAEL targeting civilians.
80. Palestinians Should Thank Hizbullah
Draconius Horribilis ,   Paterson USA   (12.27.08)
The Oppressed people of Palestine should thank Hizbullah for humiliating the IDF in both wars it fought against them. That is why the IDF is petrified to face the Mujahideen in battle. They remember full well when they ran away before Hizbullah commandos in 2006 and leaving their dead comrades on the field as they fled in panic.
81. # 15 Akram really?
petra ,   usa   (12.27.08)
don't hold your breath muslim. 60 years later and it's still the warring pals who are killed. Israel will be here after we're both dead and buried. And tht's GOOOOOOOOOOOOD. Have a nice day, creep.
82. # 34 Oscare better than the sh!t you believe
Petra ,   usa   (12.27.08)
now bow to the pope and try not to remember the pedophiles your "religion" represents. Idiot!
83. # 74 Turk It's the pals dying
petra ,   usa   (12.27.08)
and we're so pleased. The pals started this and Israel will finish it. Hope you like long seiges where you lose again. Typical response, loser.
84. # 79 Danny, true and thank you!!!
petra ,   usa   (12.27.08)
85. #79 Danny, true you lack it
observer   (12.27.08)
86. #85, seriously
Danny   (12.27.08)
you are the cut and paste king, can you not cut and paste his name. I want to buy the man a drink and see if we can get him promoted instead of the whinny, "we're so sorry" idiots we normally have apologising for hitting out enemy. You hear Nasrallah apologising for raining 3,999 rockets on non-military targets?
87. Losing the killer instinct?
Ray Hanania ,   Chicago, Illinois US   (12.27.08)
Wow. Hamas fires 50 rockets and kills 1Israeli (maybe another) in a terrorist attack or rockets, wounds many more (all civilians) and destroys a Synagogue and homes. Israel responds with massive F-16fire power killing 200 Palestinians (mostly civilians) and injure 300, including a mosque, homes, and more. You call that "losing" the killer instinct? Sounds like we're just doing what we always do. Stoke the flames of conflict just before an election. Hamas gets an extremist Netanyahu government and builds up its strength ... the prospects for peace continue to dim ... bloodlust grows on both sides ... and sounds like the "killer instinct" is alive and well on both sides. Ray Hanania www.RadioChicagoland.com
88. killer instinct
sam ,   new york   (12.27.08)
The israelis will not fight for real until rockets fall on Tel Aviv.
89. #87, this like the mythical "mostly civilians"
Danny   (12.27.08)
killed in Lebanon?
90. What is behind us and what is before us are tiny matters..
Alexander ,   Herzliya, Israel   (12.27.08)
...compared to what is within us. We lost nothing. We always had the instinct, the guts and the wisdom. Time to stop sniveling like fags and get to work and kick some Arab butts.
