Ring the Gaza with artillery. Whenever Hamas shoots missiles or mortars, respond with the artillery with full knowledge that it is less accurate, but a lot cheaper to use than planes. This less than perfect accuracy will have an important psychological impact on the population

Sorry Roy, whether or not Hamas' rockets are "amateur", they serve their purpose. Over 80 have been fired into Israeli territory over the past few days. Imagine that in London... you're walking the streets, never quite sure if a missile is about to land on you. The warning system gives you about 2 seconds to head for cover... Under these circumstances what exactly is Israel supposed to do? We've tried alternatives. We've had the cease fire. We've had lengthy diplomatic contacts via the Egyptians. Any sane nation has to defend itself, by rooting out the cause of the attacks. I'm sure virtually all (except a few left-of-sane) Israeli will be glad that we are now taking steps to protect ourselves. The sad thing is that the Gazans could have the relative peace and prosperity of their West Bank compatriots by now - or even up to Israeli standards. When Israel evacuated the Strip, the Gazans could have either built or bombed. The Americans and the EU would have pumped unbelieveable sums of money in there. Sadly their hatred of Israel was greater than their desire for a normal life, and they took the bombing option.
