32. I am European and I support Israel FULLY.
Wolf ,   Berlin, Germany   (12.30.08)
Those Europeans who dont support Israel should be ashamed of themselves.
33. Czechs should get Schwarzenberg resigned to avoid Anti-islam
Tayfun_Turkey ,   Istanbul   (12.30.08)
Czechs should get Schwarzenberg resigned to avoid Anti-islamic appearance in their government, Hamas may be partially responsible from ongoing war but KILLING CIVILLIANS BY ISRAEL IS NOT ACCEPTABLE and when there is such civilian losses, killed children NOT CONDAMNING ISRAEL IS ANTI-ISLAMICI BIAS not to mention holding Hamas responsible from Israeli massacres of children.
34. #18- showing your ignorance - here, read about the man

a small and a bigger country . And , i won't see ANY president sitting down for a beer during a visit .
36. # 18, Anis The Syrian Retard
Andy ,   West Coast, USA   (12.30.08)
Schwarzenberg is a German last name, and many ethnic Czechs, just like Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, have German last names. It doesn't mean he's Jewish. As for non-Jews being friends with Jews, it's very common and normal among people who're not insane, i.e. the non-Arab peoples of the world. I'm sure it's very hard for people like to you to comprehend something like that.
37. #33 Tayfun
JonathanInTelAviv ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (12.30.08)
Right, and French should make Sarkozy resign, and Germans should make Merkel resign, and Americans should make Bush resign, and Egyptians should make Mubarak resign, and Palestinians should make Abbas resign, and ... All to please you. And radical Islam.
38. He is a Jew!
Anis ,   damascus   (12.30.08)
"Schwarzenberg, Towns in Saxony and Hungary, also n. of noble family, Lords od Scheinberg in Franconia protectors of Jews" .... look for his name in page 681 of this book: http://books.google.com/books?id=_dQP4nHgyVUC&pg=PA681&lpg=PA681&dq=Jewish+family+%2B+schwarzenberg&source=bl&ots=AMzthQIhyQ&sig=duJxJMtq61uKZDIYVcxsZhCsj40&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=10&ct=result#PPA681,M1
39. Anis
Alex   (12.30.08)
Anis, perhaps in your racist country people do not understand that a Foreign Minister of the democratic country (not like yours, ruled by a lunatic Alavite family) represents the people of the country, whether he is ethnically Czech or Czech with German roots.
40. Iain Munro
Alex ,   NYC   (12.30.08)
Iain Munor, perhaps you have a better plan for responding to years of rocket attacks coming from Gaza that's ruled by Hamas. What would you do ? Israel had pulled out completely from Gaza years ago and yet rocket and mortar attacks are a daily occurence. Palestinian Hamas leadership is surely lacking any common sense; that is, if they even remotely cared for their population.
41. Tayfun Turkey
Alex ,   NYC   (12.30.08)
Tayfun Turkey - did it occur to you that while hunting for Kurdish guerillas your own army very often kills innocent civilians, including children ? When you fight a guerilla force in the most densely populated part of the world, you unfortunately accidentally kill civilians. Israelis waited for several years, hoping some sense would come into the stupid heads of Hamas leaders, but rockets and mortars were a daily occurence. No country can allow that to happen.
42. #30
Santiago ,   AMERICA   (12.30.08)
You pompous condescending Irish/British nitwit. Do you really think that Hamas wouldn't already have nuked Israel by now if it had the military capacity that Israel does? You Brits/Irish really get on my nervies, pontificating from y our armchairs on things you pampered idiots don't understand. Go back to your tea party, dimwit, and stop wasting space.
43. CZECHS, HUNGARIANS....4 Israel
Gavriel ,   Budapest, Hungary   (12.30.08)
Czechs are right. Here in Hungary, despite of the new wave of anti-Semitic speach coming out of ugly throats of a loud minority of neo-nazis, the large majority of Hungarians DO UNDERSTAND Israelis and share the above cited Czech views. Even Viktor Orban, leader of the right-wing (that is usually less supportive of Jews and Israel in generally) told many times that Israel has the right to defend its citizens like any other UN member state. The Hungarian press is more objective than CNN or BBC. They often take articles from Haaretz and Yedihot Ah'ronot. France, the UK, and Italy can not dictate alone the foregin policy of the EU. Sarkozy behaves differently when visiting Israel and in a completely different way when talking to the public at home. He should better remember his Jewish roots, but of course we know that the biggest anti-Semites are often of Jewish origin...
44. I didn´t vote for EU
sanna ,   sweden   (12.30.08)
I normally thinks EU is good for nothing - this was the first possitive thing I heard for a long time - Schwartzenberg keep up your good work!
45. The civilized world is wit Israel!
Maurice ,   Montreal   (12.30.08)
Including my own government!
46. Mighty mighty Czech Republic
Karen ,   London   (12.30.08)
Bit sad when your lead news item is that the Czechs are on your side. Reminds me a little of those tragic little events the Taiwanese do with Micronesia and others. The real problem for Israel is that the US is not on their side with these latest actions in Gaza. The Israelis were a bit taken aback by the US decision to support a UN Security Council press statement calling for an immediate ceasefire and for the crossings to be re-opened. In public the White House remains supportive but in private they have given Israel until the end of the week to declare some sort of "victory" and end the military action. Will be interesting to see what will happen if Israel refuses: US/Israel ties are already a bit shaky after the whole Annapolis/settlement expansion debacle (Rice was furious at Olmert making repeated tender announcements as soon as she got on the plane at Ben Gurion).
47. WWII anecdote
Avinoam ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (12.30.08)
Riding on the train to Auschwitz, my grandfather recalls that only the Czechs showed them any compassion, running with the trains, passing food to the passengers. I'm not sure how relevant this is today. Although it does seem that little has changed in 70 years. With the very important exception of Germany, which I view with great respect and admiration. Regardless , upon reading the above, it seems that with the Czechs getting the EU presidency this bodes well for Israel in 2009.
48. @Anis, Damascus
Petr ,   Karlovy Vary, CZ   (12.30.08)
Well, his full name and title is His Serene Highness Prince Karl VII of Schwarzenberg, Duke of Krummau, Count of Sulz, Princely Landgrave of Kelttgau and belongs to one of the oldest european aristocratic and catholic houses. Even you have more Jews in your family tree then he does. What you don´t have is his wisdom and nobilty.
49. #33
kj ,   Czech republic   (12.30.08)
Don't tell us what to do for first. Mr. Schwarzenberg is by far the best FM we've had in decades and finally someone to be proud of , not just for his statement on this conflict. As for your arguments- killing Palestinian children is bad but killing Israelis, even in the course of a truce is right, ay? And anti-Islamic appereance? OMG, are you trying to tell us that all governments in Europe should be pro-Islamic no matter what? After London? After Madrid? Are you outta mind? And as for news sources and dead kids on Palestinian territory- do yourself a favor and see a document called "Pallywood", it is on Youtube and also on GoogleVideo. Whenever I see some pictures taken in the warzone, I recall this doc. It's wagging the dog at its best. I'm not dismissing civilians' suffering, but it's abused by local media for sure. To be honest- if Turkey is gonna join the EU, I think this will mark the end of the EU as such. We don't build on common principles, it's so vivid in your post.
50. #3 "Czech" Jane speaks like an Arab
tolik ,   Zefat   (12.30.08)
I think "Jane" and "Al" are the same person. Jane obviously speaks Hamas language. Hamas can't be right in a whole conflict because it's not even about rockets. It's about the goal to destroy Israel. And to those who are crying about palestinian "civilians".: if you so much care about them, tell them to make true peace with Israel, then no one will die.
51. To Nr 22: Don't forget the racist Benes decreed!
Gavriel ,   Budapest, Hungary   (12.30.08)
Czechs were NOT always clever and wise... Eduard Benes was an anti-Hungarian and anti-German racist. According to the shameful Benes decreed hundred thousand of Hungarians and Germans were persecuted, deprived of their citizenship, tortured, killed, and deported from Czechoslovakia. The Benes Decrees are still part of Czech and Slovak Law!!! If Czechs are clever, they should admit their failures and cancel this shameful law that makes me remember the anti-Jewish laws in Germany and Hungary under Hitler, Horthy, and Szálasi.
52. Czech support in 1948...
Flavio ,   Sao Paulo, Brazil   (12.30.08)
...was decisive to ensure Israel's independence!! Certainly the memories of Munich, 1938, and Prague, 1968 are both alive there, as well the example of Dubcek, Benes and especially the unforgettable Masaryk, killed by the Soviets and after whom a kibbutz is named. Kol hakavod to the brave Czech people, thank you very much!
53. i am swiss live in france and i support
bruno ,   bouxwiller france   (12.30.08)
ISRAEL ! i get upset when i read all these biased reports about Israel, Europe has always been a flourishing place for antisemitism. God bless Israel, Israel live forever. Blessings to Israel's soldiers, blessings to the government (although they appear not much better than other governments, but they need divine help and inspiration to do the right thing). may the mouths of the hate spitting enemies of Israel be shut. SHALOM
54. Al, Jane, are you sure you're Czech?
AK   (12.30.08)
You sure don't sound like it.
55. Tayfun, and silly Israelis thought Turkey was their friend.
AK   (12.30.08)
I remember when you suffered an earthquake, Israelis were the first to come to your aid with people, equipment, even field hospitals. Now you're showing your appreciation -- you are siding with Hamas murderers against the people who had always helped you, just because you are a Muslim first and a human being last. Lets hope there are better people than you in Turkey -- after all you're being marketed to us as proof that Muslims can be European first.
56. Thank you Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg!
Johnny ,   Stockholm Sweden   (12.30.08)
Leaders like Czech foreign minister Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg is the ones who make the difference in a positive way. Thank you Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg for staniding up for the truth.
57. @50, Tolik, Zefat
Petr ,   Karlovy Vary, CZ   (12.30.08)
There is nothing like a "Jane" among the names we give to our children.
58. Mr. Munro of Ireland
sarit ,   jerusalem israel   (12.30.08)
Where has your outrage been since 2001 when the Palestinians started firing missiles into civilians towns and villages of Israel? Or since 2005 when we withdrew from Gaza with the world communities' assurances that this would bring peace? The Arabs have been murdering us for generations here, and YOU are the one who has been complacent, stirring yourself only when your latent Catholic Jew-hatred, inculcated in your schooling and your Mass, is triggered by the sight of Jews finally standing up for their right to be free of gentile mastery, free of pogroms, free of annihilation at the hands of "peace-loving Europeans" like yourself or "peace loving Islam" like that embodied by Hamas. The ROOT of this conflict is Arab racism and Moslem triumphalism: their belief that they are racially superior to Jews and per the teachings of Islam, have the right to be our masters, to kill us, to keep us as second class citizen IF we survive their periodic mass murders. Their belief is that they never need to make peace with us because we are inferior to them, and their religion tells them they are superior and must kill us. These are religious fanatics. You, an Irishman, son of a people who struggled to throw off the yoke of English racism after they invaded your country, stripped you of all rights, disenfranchised you, seized your land, taxed you into poverty and exile--YOU tell us we have less rights than the Irish? WE cannot throw of the yoke of Arab overlordship? Our liberation movement is no less valid than your own, Mr. Munro--and we will fight to keep our freedoms, to keep our country, and to protect our children from the murderous attacks of the Palestinian warlords firing rockets at our towns.
59. Hamas are liers
Dvir Noiman ,   Florida, USA   (12.30.08)
It is crystal clear that Hamas is not speaking the truth, they talk of cease fire so they can regroup, recent history shows they are not serious care about their own people. Israel gave them so many chances, IDF should keep with full force!
60. To #3: Jane: You are quite right! Its all the Jews fault!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (12.30.08)
God created the Heavens and the Earth - The Jews fault! Abraham was given the land from the Sea to the Two Rivers by God! That's the Jews fault! The Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Christians, the Crusaders, the Spanish, the Church, the English, the Ottomans, the Moroccans and the Arab world persecuted the Jews and that was definitely the Jews fault. Then came the biggest Jewish crime" in history. The Nazis murdered 6,000,000 Jews, among the 1,500,000, children many of them from your country which was once know as Czechoslovakia. This of course was without any doubt the Jews fault. Then, after the few remaining survivors of the REAL Holocaust came to the land that God had given us and from which we had been driven numerous times and was under a British Mandate, the Arabs started killing the Jews and when the State of Israel was created 22 Arab countries declared war on the Jews. Then Arab terrorism was born to right all the wrongs that the Jews had committed and blew up buses, hotels, shopping malls in Israel and Jewish institutions in Argentina and other countries. They didn't succeed so their staunch ally, Osama bin Laden, decided to punish the Jews for their transgressions by killing 3,000 Americans and hundreds of other people in Madrid, Bali, Mumbai, Islamabad and many other places. But Jane, that wasn't enough. In 2000 your heroes started to bomb Sderot and other towns in the south of Israel. They have terrorized the children of Sderot for more than 8 years. They have justified their killing and maiming our children by saying that all Israelis are soldiers. Well, I have never seen an Israeli child wearing a suicide bombers belt with the full intention of kill. The other terrible thing that the Jews have done is to protect our people. We commit the heinous crime of protecting our people and do not place them in the firing line or sacrifice them in the name of the warped and disgusting cause called Islamic Fundamentalism. Just think how many Israelis could have been killed if we didn’t protect our people in defiance of International Law! Jane, by your statements in your talkbacks I doubt that you have the intelligence to understand what I have written but if you do then you will see the stupidity of your rhetoric. Jane remember, the Arabs can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but they cannot fool all the people all the time!
