32. Spare us your infantile self indulgences.
Dave ,   UK   (01.01.09)
Such complete bull ! Hundreds are dead , thousands are wounded, and this guy is rambling on about Algebra. You can tell he has too much time on his hands after he collects his paycheck from the US to be indulging his "intellect" .
33. As an intellectual I reject your ideas. Shame.
Yaakov Sullivan ,   NYC   (01.01.09)
As a wife of a Palestinian Arab who is originally from Gaza I would like to protest. Did you see all the photos and Al Jasira reports? Unfortunately we need UNCONDITIONAL israeli wisdrowal from Gaza. our family is suffering every day because israel shelling our community in Gaza, I am simply in tears.
34. Yes, #7, Syrian American, any human would cry
Vered, Israel   (01.01.09)
but the difference is we would cry for your images, and you pass out candy when you see ours. The real question is, WHY are these images so tragic? Because Gazan leadership destroyed perfectly good greenhouses, given to them by those who wished them well, put the biggest welfare check in history toward arming themselves, and wouldn't stop hitting us with rockets. So, even though the images are horrific, if Israel wins, YOU WIN, too, in that you'll be ridden of fanatics who only know how to kill and hate, and start a productive society.
35. Article
Marilyn ,   USA   (01.01.09)
It maybe human nature to lump everything into categories, however people are individuals, no matter what their religion or such. In this though they cannot be who they are, if have all these bullies running around Gaza. In this the Israel government really needs to try to adjust policies to make it safe not just for the Israeli's but also for the average Palestinians. They need to get in the frame of mind in which they are not going to reward or boost up the radical bullies no matter what.
36. I ask an earnest question to the Arabs who are commenting
Vered, Israel   (01.01.09)
To those of you who are so moved by the images coming out of Gaza, I want to ask a question. When you demand Israeli withdrawal, why don't you understand that we can't withdraw while Hamas is still capable of rocket fire on our cities? Also, if the suffering is so great, why don't you demand that Hamas give up? If Hamas surrenders, you will get unconditional Israeli withdrawal. Why is all you see is the suffering, and so you demand a stop to it, but won't demand what is necessary to make it stop. Our position is that after all this suffering, Hamas is still bucking for a fight, asking, begging for a ground invasion. Why don't you demand of Hamas, the only ones who can make the suffering stop, to do so?
37. Jack Sullivan, go study some history, will ya?
JPS ,   Efrat   (01.01.09)
Good grief, Sullivan, I'm sorry for your personal suffering, but let's get things in perspective here. Gaza is ruled by Hamas, whose official policies and positions are no to peace, no to peace negotiations, and yes to complete territorial conquest of Israel and yes to attacking Israeli civilians. Just like Japan and Germany in WW2, there is no sense in talking to them, because we're talking peace and they're talking war. The ONLY option right now is war. Hamas will not talk peace. Listen to their leaders, go read their charter. The sad truth is that Germany and Japan had to go through horrific self-destruction followed by unconditional surrender to get to where they are today. Unless you can go change Hamas, the Pals are destined for self-destruction because they haven't learned from history. The positive thought is that if it does indeed come to all out war, the Pals might emerge from the ashes like the Japanese and Germans did. No, we're not going to stop because Hamas is not going to back down. Go talk to them and see what you can do. I know you'll be unsuccessful.
38. Arabs must decide and there lies the rub...
Lior ,   Israel   (01.01.09)
...and a perplexing issue that defies all of history. Time worn indisputable fact remains when people were oppressed by their own tyrannical leaders they rose up and sacrificed onto themselves to make a better life. EVEN when they sacrificed their own lives in so doing. Not in Jihad or in trips to heaven to met their beautiful virgins either but in honest to goodness forward measures. History books are full of examples of these brave people who enacted change at all costs with no sacrifice to big. Yet we see much of the Arab world is bereft of that. So we say, "pooor you I understand you are weak and fear getting your hands chopped." Indeed the Arab/Islamic world is different in the manner of excessive modern day brainwashing and by leaders who care little for them. However this should not be used as a certifiable excuse because it is the excuses the world has given them that also have kept them down and silent. Like a sober family member supplying booze to their drunken brother for their own selfish reasons, so goes the saga of what the west has done to pacify and appease the Palestinains and others. We see with our own eyes now the horrid co-dependency that has whitewashed this entire nightmare all at the cost of innocent lives and always, truth. Honest to goodness truth. Good writing. I wish you well.

For a woman, a Palestinian Arab from Gaza has the name of Sullivan???
40. Well said Farid Ghadry!
Linda ,   Israel   (01.01.09)
hamas and hizbullah don't have no place between the Arabs. Countless commentors on here both from Gaza and Lebanon have clearly stated that these terror groups are doing nothing but harm. They don't really care about the arabs. If the Palestinians had some sense they could have turned Gaza into a beautiful place with a breath taking seaside city. They are not a lot of people in a big area there. You can make it flourish and succeed. Stand together and kick out that cancerous hamas and make yourself a decent nation!
41. Hamas represent all that went wrong in Arab World
Bogumila ,   Poland   (01.01.09)
Even the secretary general of the Arab League criticized the Palestinians for their inability to remain united behind President Abbas. He said sth like "Palestinian divisions has led to this disregard of Arabs". Wake up, Palestinians, who write here... Why voting for people who sell your bread and life for arms and power for themselves? But, to # 14 - you (and me ;) have a privilege to live far, far away from the area of any kind of armed conflicts- in nice, quiet neighborhoods, easy life, etc. It is very easy for you and me to say what others should (or shouldn't) do because it is not us who pays the price for this opinion... Empathy, yes, but perhaps we could better leave decision to Israelis and Palestinians on what they should or shouldn't do ? Well, some time ago I had a discussion with some French human rights activists. They knew for sure what Africans should do to fight AIDS. Suddenly I looked around, at candles at the tables surrounded by people with beautiful, silk scarf, at waiters in black and white... and felt myself as if taking part in a surrealist movie. When you say what Israel should do, do you really know what you are talking about? My regards, hope you do not feel offended with what I said.
42. Arabs must decide

Thank you for this excellent comment. I find it heartening to read a balanced, rational and thoughtful view on this most difficult issue. Regards:-)

israeli ,   israel   (01.01.09)
I might consider your application for an intellectual position if you ran a spellcheck on your drivel. A wife of a palestinian you might be, but that does not an intellectual make. By the way, would you like some cheese and crackers with your whine? A hanky as well?
44. to all Gazans
israeli ,   israel   (01.01.09)
should you not be in your bomb shelters so as to avoid getting killed? Oh, you have none. Shame, all that international aid money being squandered first by Madam Arafart and then by purchasing Chinese-made Grad rockets. Go cry on Haniyeh's shoulders. You elected them, you deserve them. Now enjoy the fruits of your dancing on rooftops and passing sweets when a suicide bombers kills innocent Israeli civilians or when innocent people died on 9/11. And how come you can still use the internet and skype? I thought there was no electricity in Gaza.
45. Arabs must decide.
mark ,   las vegas,nv   (01.01.09)
Folk's it's this simple, and frankly amazing !. Arabs, (not all), simply have no love for anything other than Allah, the Quaran and the destruction of civilizations and there populations which do not conform to the teachings of Radical Islam. How so many (Muslims) can get duped into this failure of an idea is beside me. The religion of Islamic nations is one of vilonce, religious intolerence, and hatred towards infidels/ kafir, you and I. I say keep dropping the bombs, talking with these moron's will produce nothing. to comment # 7, I did contact my senator, I told him that we need to send more U.S. military hardware to Israel (you hater !, go back home) and by the way the U.S. supports this Israeli action as do most of it's citizens. God bless Israel. Mark U.S.A.

Incredable insight! Amen to all you said.
48. Sane people should unite
Israeli Mom ,   Israel   (01.01.09)
The Arab and Muslim world has its sane people and has its extremists. So does Israel. Hey, so does the US and most countries in the world. You can be Jewish, Muslim, Christian or none of them and does not mean you are one or the other. I truly believe that the sane voices in the Middle East should unite and fight the extremists, be them Hamas or the Jewish Settlers in Hebron. Alas, as noted, in most Arab countries it is impossible to advocate such views. People like the writer of this piece go into exile (if they're lucky and don't get arrested first). I know from talking with people in Gaza that many of them share these views. They can't say it out loud though.
49. #43you want to sacrifice State of Israel for your desire,
e.m Jordan is Palse ,   s.f   (01.01.09)
But I have better solution for you; you are free in S.F castor Street, You don’t need to sacrifice Jewish State for your nonsense desire; beside you are not a Jew at all too,
50. To # 10 Jae , Lynn US
e.m Jordan is Palse ,   s.f   (01.01.09)
I agree with the most of your post, excepts, Israel must require its Arab citizens to be loyal- as in army duty, national service, and whatever else makes a citizen loyal or non loyal in other exemplary nations like the US. Arab nations will see how well Israel takes care of their Arab brothers and sisters who are truly loyal to helping the Jewish country be their home and home to the Jewish people as well. The reason, Wohm ever believe in religion of Islam, You can’t trust them to serve in IDF, The Arabs Israeli has all the rights like Jews Israeli have and the Arabs nations already knows their brothers and sisters have better life in Israel, the only way they will change is new education and reformation in their religion and until now that was impossible,

WHY I SUPPORT THE STATE OF ISRAEL Written for Hadasah on 10-15-2001 By Nonie Darwish Every aspect of the Moslem culture and Media is geared toward the hatred and elimination of Israel. But even if there was no Israel, then what? Will they live happily ever after? Will suddenly Suddam Hussein start respecting Moslem countries around him such as Iran and Kuwait? No. Will Moslems in India, Chechnia, the Philippines and Bosnia suddenly decide to coexist in peace with the rest of the non-Moslem population? I don’t think so. These separatist groups are supported by Arab oil money. Will the hatred and jealousy of Western Christian democracies go away? No. Israel is the excuse for terrorizing the West. The 19 terrorists were mostly Saudis, a couple of Egyptians and a Lebanese; all are from what we call “Moderate” Arab counties!
57. peace
marco ,   pardes hana israel   (01.02.09)
dear gaza citizens now is the time for the people in the streets to turn out in HUGE peace rallies and demand that hamas surrender themselves to you. Then you can finally take control of your destiny. Failure to do this immediately could result in useless deaths amoung your civilian population. And as long as we're on the subject how about similar peace rallies in Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Indonesia and wherever fanatical Islam has shown its' unwelcome head. Take care and act now, Israel is fed up with the rhetoric being spouted on sites like memritv.org Peace to all who belive in it. Others don't have the right to breath our precious air.
58. #25 and Ghadry
English dog ,   London   (01.02.09)
You think that Ghadry speaks like "a breath of fresh air". He is syria's number one Uncle Tom and I don't think he is destined long for this world - if you get my drift. Syrian traitors don't usually live long and fulfilling lives. And if you think that his word carries any weight whatsoever inside Syria (where no one has heard of him) you are living in a fool's paradise.
59. as an intellectual
Linn Denton ,   Keller, USA   (01.02.09)
If you are truely an intellectual you undoubtly will understand that if someone is shooting missles at you then you have to either run or fight. It seems to most Americans that the Palestinians provoke the fight then when retaliated upon they act like they did nothing to start the fighting, Well we are not stupid so please don't try to cry on our shoulders or you fellow Arabs when you get your butts kicked for sailing missles at Israel. That's stupid. Don't even think about asking Americans for their support. I'm just a hard working American who is really tired of hearing you whine when you start the fighting and refuse to stop after repeated warnings. That's pretty stupid in itself. Look me up I would tell you this to your face. Linn
60. Self-rightious 'human rights' groups should read this...
Julia ,   New York   (01.02.09)
excellent article and finally understand that the biggest enemy of the Arabs are radical terrorist organizations like the Hamas and Hisbollah that hold their citizens ransom and who do not value live.
