1. They should make them visit Gaza

2. All German School Children should see Nazis Death Camps
Karen ,   Israel   (01.08.09)
It is about time, that All German School Children not only in Bavaria, see the Nazis Death Camps, the Gas Chambers, the Ovens where they burned Childen and Adults, young & old etc. The horrific conditions that the people had to live in. It should have been made part of the schooling a long long time ago. Then maybe today there would not be neo- nazis in Germany.
3. German school kids are ignorant
Michal Jarosz ,   Gdynia Poland   (01.08.09)
When I was 15 we had a student exchange visit from Bonn, Germany and we took them to Stutthof concentration camp near my home town. The German kids were completely ignorant and showed no respect to the solemnity of the surroundings. Whilst they were being shown the introductory film outlining the origins of the extermination the German kids were messing around and making fun. When we walked through the camp itself the German kids were making fun and generally misbehaving. The trip itself made us Poles sad and we were made even more upset by the behaviour of the german kids. Our school has not participated in any more German exchanges, on account of this trip.

Karen, that is exactly what they do. The history of the holocaust is taught at least 3-4 times in school (in different grades and from different viewpoints). And if there is a camp in a reachable distance (which is most often the case), the class will go there. The problem is not the amount of education on that topic, it is that todays kids have a hard time connecting to a time that feels so far away. I see the same thing here in Israel, when young Israelis come to the memorials. The best way to make them understand is not to bring them to a Concentration Camp or a killing site. It is to bring them together with survivors or to let them read their stories and the stories of those who perished. It is much easier to connect to the human side of this monstrous crime than to buildings or train tracks.

if you are unaware of the past humans will repeat it over and over
10. #5 Agree. Emotional...
Soeren ,   Cologne/Germany   (01.09.09)
... understanding is the key. Positive empathy with the life of a survivor who finally found a save haven in Israel (happy end somehow) may perhaps open the heart – while the places of terror and mass murder (the camps) might perhaps lead to a retreat from the topic (emotional protection)...? Perhaps the camps are more for mature adults...??

You're making all of us Americans look bad. Igor is just seeing it the way it is. But you, Larry, are correct in saying that it's not a Nazi death camp. It's an Israeli prison full of innocent prisoners and headed by Hamas, which I consider to be more equated with freedom fighters or a sort of Anti-apartheid movement in South West Asia, but some consider it a terrorist organization. Yasser Arafat once said: “I come bearing an olive branch in one hand, and the freedom fighter's gun in the other. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand.” I believe that Israel didn't let him drop the branch, I think they yanked it away from him and built a wall around it and keep the Palestinians away from it. But in response to my own relation to Hamas being referred to as a terrorist organization, Arafat also said that anyone who stood by a just cause could not be a terrorist. But yeah, Nazi's were terrorists, no doubt, and I think it's all right for them to take their school kids to the camps for a vist, as long as they don't drill in to them with a guilt complex.
12. and then they would watch the news
Palestinian ,   Son of Lydd   (01.09.09)
and say, aaah, that's why they did it!
13. Perhaps they should vist Warsaw
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (01.09.09)
And then they can visit Gaza and see history repeat itself.
14. Bavarian Students to Visit Concentration Camps
Todd ,   Passaic, NJ USA   (01.09.09)
We should all applaud the efforts being made to address neo-nazi violence.
15. Jacob, Hamas is an anti-apartheid movement?
Darren ,   Oakland, CA   (01.09.09)
Seriously, have you ever read the Hamas Charter or asked yourself what the definition of Terrorism is? Have you ever read a history of the Eastern Mediterranean that wasn't written by a Muslim or a Muslim apologist? Google the term Ahl al-Dhimmi and enlighten yourself before you continue singing the praises of a Sharia state. My own personal opinion on the matter is that the Palestinians are the real occupiers/colonizers who have tried for over 2000 years to obliterate Jewish ties to the region and Arab claims of being the descendants of Canaanites are nothing more than wishful thinking. It is therefore the Zionists who are the true "Freedom Fighters" against an unyielding, brutal Arab occupation. While Yasser Arafat did, in fact, once say, “I come bearing an olive branch in one hand, and the freedom fighter's gun in the other. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand,” please note that the idea of dropping the gun never once crossed his mind. If you truly cared about human dignity, you would enlighten yourself by educating yourself.

It is better to keep quiet and have people believe you're an idiot, than open your mouth and dissipate all doubt.

And because of the experience you've made with SOME german school kids now ALL must be "ignorant" huh? BS! Oh the irony that lies in your statement lol.
18. dismantle the concentration camps
christian ,   germany   (01.11.09)
they are places where ppl were inconveivably humiliated, tortured and mass murdered. it is not a place to make a trip to, what is (imo) always sort of sightseeing, whatever decent one might be dressed or behave... however, i can understand, when relatives of victims wish to visit them. im german and ive never visited one. to me they look like "trophies" of the evil. this dachau gate "arbeit macht frei" (on the article pic) is so disgusting, impossible to describe. i dont think, there is any good in having it still there. it should have never existed, and every day its on the planet is one to many - imo. there is no need to keep those camps - everything is well documented. and to teach holocaust, there are other media - filmed documentations, even movies - much more suitable to bring the fate, suffering, fear and horror of the victims and the inhumanity of the perpetrators close to the hearts and minds.
19. Tahl..LOL Perhaps you should learn from Mark Twain

"this dachau gate 'arbeit macht frei' (on the article pic) is so disgusting, impossible to describe. " Yes, and that is why it should stay were it is. So that the next generations won't forget that the holocaust was nothing that took place on the moon, but right in the middle and under the eyes of our German society.
21. Igor - Nazis killed 13,000,000
Rob ,   Ny, USA   (01.12.09)
jews, christians, russians, gypsies and others for no reason than they were who they were. They weren't part of any armed force or threat to anyone. Israel is not targeting Palestinians, they are targeting Hamas, an extremist terrorist organizatoin who's charter calls for the destruction of Israel. A total of 800+ people have been killed in Gaza with most being Hamas militants...there's no comparison with the 13,000,000 the Nazis slaughtered. there were more people killed on the titanic than have been killed in the entire cast lead operation. There were far more killed in 9/11. Are they 'holocausts' too??? You're a joke. Israel drops leaflets warning civilians to leave before battles start in their neighborhood. Israel calls homes to tell innocents to leave before engaging Hamas next door. What does Hamas do? They hide and shoot from hospitals and schools and civilian houses. They shoot their own Palestinian brothers in cold blood because they don't agree with what Hamas is doing. and support Fatah They execute their own Palestinian brothers without trial for rumors of helping Israel. You're a fool who is obviously just trying to mock the jewish communities tragic past because inside you're weak. You're weak and hate yourself for not being able to stand up for what is right. I'm sure there's a nice spot in hell waiting for you with your name on it Igor.
