tony harris ,   efrat   (01.15.09)
female Rabbi
62. Not Speaking for Me...
Rabbi Cy Stanway   (01.15.09)
I am a Reform Rabbi and this group is most assuredly not speaking for me. Too often our movement is cast as ducking confrontation with enemies since it might upset some. I refuse to cower in front of Hamas or even my collegues. They do not speak for me, for many of my collegues, nor necessarily for my congregation. They speak for themselves and, although some of them are personal friends, this is a point about which we firmly, yet respectfully, disagree. There is a time for sitting and learning and a time to get up from yeshiva and break a sweat. Now is that time.
63. They're not rabbis, but rabbits.
Esav Benyamin ,   USA   (01.15.09)
Afraid to fight for their freedom, they want everyone else to beg for the right to live like they do. They don't know the first principle of Jewish law. An by the way, even before Jewish law, the law given to Noah: Genesis 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made He man.
64. Eldar , it would have more weight
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.15.09)
had he also condemned the thousands of missiles fired on Israel
65. #59: Jews are angry because not since WW2...
shneerhere ,   Chicago   (01.15.09)
Not since WW2 have we been targets for such mass slaughter with glee as we are by the likes of Fatah, Hizbollah, Hamas and Company. So, yeah, we get more than a little angry when some 'rabbis' with a liberal Leftist agenda become enablers and aid and abett those who would spray us with bullets, shrapnel and C4.
66. rabbis for human rights
Bubbe ,   US   (01.15.09)
dear rabbis, leave our Israeli family alone and go about your business elsewhere. There is a war being fought and many non-Israeli Jews support our brave IDF in all they are accomplishing now. Israel's and our eventual survival depends on it so go pedal your self-righteousness to those who really need it which it's not Israel. You make me ashamed to be a Jew from America.
67. To #1
Bubbe ,   US   (01.15.09)
Regardless of your opinion, these people are rabbis a fact you need to respect. Disagree, as I do, all you want with their cockeyed opinions but respect their education.
68. 40 Charles , this is not the time for a theologic debate
S Judah ,   London   (01.15.09)
on the Shoah. For the present know only that a very high portion of those boys fighting for us are believers. Know that a huge majority of those boys fighting for us , even those you make think are seculars are believers and carry Tehillim with them. Know also that despite the Shoah religious Judisim thriving. So for now I think it would be a good gesture for you to join in with the rest of us and say some Tehillim for our boys.
69. 68 , so don't do it
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.15.09)
If you believe in this BS , do it . It can't hurt our soldiers anyhow , nor help them . You still owe me a response , as long as you don't give it , don't write to me
70. #59 Eldar, Caterpillar...
Brana Lobel ,   Israel   (01.15.09)
Said the Caterpillar to Alice, "Whoooo are youuuuuuu???" Therefore in answer to your comments and questions: 1)Since when is a visceral response incorrect? Sometimes it is the most rapid and accurate response, as when your gut tells you something. 2)Since when is "angry" outlawed? As Rabi said, angry in the right proportion, at the right time...surely this is the right time. 3)For him to live in Sderot certainly does constitute an argument, as in the famous:"do not make a judgment until you walk in someone's shoes". 4)Jerusalem may have had a higher body count but Sderot is a small town with limited resources, working class people, and very little political clout. It has been hit very hard and repeatedly. Your argument is specious. 5)Protect human life? How about protecting Am Yisrael? There is a time for war and a time for peace--Ecclesiastes. False and mistaken pity, as King Shaul's for Agag, had to be met by no less than the Navi Shmuel who did the job of killing himself. There is no human action that is valid and sacrosanct in all cases, even peace, love, mom and apple pie...which is something you and Asherman cannot wrap your brains around. The fakistinians are causing us no end of trouble. We never should have given up Gaza. Now we have to clean it up. 6)His title does not mean the same thing as a normative Jewish Rabbi. He rejects the Torah. You can't pick and choose among what Torah precepts to obey and still call yourself a real Jew. 7) Intolerant? If vigorously disapproving of a misled and misleading Jew in wartime is intolerance, so be it. Your attempt at handslapping is what is incorrect. This isn't cocktail party conversation. There's a war action going on.
71. 69 I really do despair of you at times.
S Judah ,   london   (01.16.09)
For a so called enlightened person, you display signs of fundamentalism that would make the Wahabi's blush. Join the Jew's Charles.
72. S Judah . Answer my questions
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.16.09)
And believe your dark middle age beliefs , i'm living in the 21st Century in Israel not in london [ claiming to be on mission there ] . Are you Jewish after all ?
73. S Judah .Not so called , but truly enlightened
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.17.09)
and that's why i do not believe .
74. What is happening to us, people of Israel?
Andres Kleiban ,   Rosario, Argentina   (01.19.09)
Have you forget our history? How can you say who´s jew and who isn´t? How can you say that A is "more jewish" than B? Luckly, the priesthood were abolish after the destruction of the Solomon´s temple 70 BC and nobody can determinate if A is "more jewish" than B. Fortunately there are many branches of judaism and all of them deserves respect. Our chachamim are not only those who study torah but Freud, Einstein, Spinoza, Proust, Kafka, Chagall, Modigliani, Heine, Hertz, Marx, Buber, Mendelsohn, Mahler, Rita Levi Moltalcini, Salk, Sabin, Rubinstein, Kasparov, Ilia Metchnikov, Paul Ehrlich, Isaac Carasso, Lev Ben Gerson, Disraeli, Gerald Kersh, Itzjak Yost, Emil Beliner and many others as well. We have to respect others opinion even if we are not agree. By the way, arab and others non jews could have a different point of view and that not meant that they are antisemitic. Our 4000-year rich history didn´t made by one monolitic thought. The Rambam´s More Nevuchim told us that jewish mind and soul can take different or same ways
75. Andres , do you study the Jewish contribution ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.19.09)
Not all those you list were 100 % Jewish , you know it probably . But , not everyone will agree that they were OUR chachamim , They were for most of them , or even all , not religious , and chachamim in the Jewish meaning are religious . Your list is a short extract of all those GREAT JEWS who contributed so much to HUMANITY .
76. To #67
Nili ,   Jerusaelm Israel   (01.19.09)
Your reform "rabbi" knows less than an average orthodox high-school kid. This is not a real rabbi--to betray the Jewish people and defend the very ones who want to wipe us off the face of the earth--and in time of war! He and his like should all go to Gaza--oh wait, they can't--they would all slaughtered...
77. We have to listen to others
Andres Kleiban ,   Rosario, Argentina   (01.20.09)
I know what a chacham means, but I tried to point out that most of jewish contributions to humanity rellied on non religious jews. I don´t subscribe the point of view "100% jew". What does it mean? I do not want to polemize about religion but Halacha is just and interpretation of tora, and just like others intrerpretations it might be wrong. In any case, I just want to state that we must listen to other´s arguments and what has happened to us during 2000 years of gola didn´t entitled us to undermine others groups
78. Andres , i no always agree with Halacha
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.20.09)
By halacha someone born Jewish remains Jewish , there i gave this Mgr Lustiger as an example of a case where i can't agree . But i can't accept as being Jewish , people who converted , they are Jewish by Halacha if converted by Halacha , but need some generations before they belong to the Jewish people . You can convert to a religion , but not so easily to a people . Of the 150 + Jewish Nobel prizes only two , as far as known to me , were religious . The writer Agnon and economist Aumann. We have to respect other views even if we not agree [ you wrote in your first TB ] , yes , as long as they are tolerant to my views and respect them . Regarding being antisemite , not all anti Israelis are , but many , if not most of antisemites hide this behind an anti Israeli flag . Being anti Israeli is more accepted in the world than being antisemite . Most of the people in your list are well known to me , 20 of them are already in my collection . You forgot a R in Berliner , the inventor of the phonograph .
