1. BARAK is biggest disgrace in ISRAEL! from todays haaretz
GET REAL ,   USA   (01.15.09)
Defense Minister Ehud Barak apologized to Ban earlier Thursday after Israeli forces shelled the main UN aid compound in the city of Gaza, Ban told reporters. Advertisement The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said its compound, where up to 700 Palestinians were being sheltered, was hit twice by fire and three staff members were wounded. Ban, visiting Israel as part of a diplomatic drive for a cease-fire in Gaza, said he had protested strongly to Barak, who apologized and told him it was a "grave mistake". "I conveyed my strong protest and outrage to the defense minister and the foreign minister and demanded a full explanation," Ban said, adding that he had demanded an investigation into the shelling. "The defense minister said to me it was a grave mistake and he took it very seriously. He assured me that extra attention will be paid to U.N. facilities and staff and this will not be repeated."
2. Olmert Don't Screw This One Up!
meir elazar   (01.15.09)
We can now set our demands as high as we want. They are hurting and we are not. 1. SHALIT MUST BE RELEASED 2. HAMAS must publically renounce terror and remove clause of mission to Destroy Israel and Murder All Jews and Israelis 3. HAMAS must unarm and turn power over to Fatah. This includes PRC, IJ, and El Aqsa. You can continue the lst..
3. Israel Surely Knows
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville, USA   (01.15.09)
That Iran will rearm Hamas before the truce is even in place. You don't accept a ceasefire with Islamic terrorists. You destroy them!
4. Unbelievable! Don't whine for sympathy
Joe ,   Ohio, USA   (01.15.09)
next time they rocket, You had your chance to finish it but your leaders are truly tired of winning
5. cease fire
MC ,   UK   (01.15.09)
Rockets are still flying and what about Gilad Shalit? and the government again will put our security into the hands of others! Obama takes over in a few days and it wont be favourabe to Israel more of the same on both sides! Where is an Israeli leader who can save the situation? None in sight as far as I can see. Just don't vote in Livni's lot again it will be disasterous
6. No Gilad Shait - no cease fire!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (01.15.09)
7. Barak making political points at our expense.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (01.15.09)
Our slippery unprincipled unscrupulous over-stuffed opportunist of a Defense Minister is falling over himself trying to score points on Livni. Notice this BS truce is being advanced by the Defense Dept. not the Foreign Ministry. The real loser, of course, are the citizens of Israel whose security interests are sacrificed for the short-term political advantage of Barak. Expect literally tons of spin to explain the benefits of this phoney truce to the Israeli voters.
8. Report on "green light" WhaaaaT??
Miriam ,   T.A Israel   (01.15.09)
Here we go again.Talk, talk and nothing further but reenforcing Hamas? Are our leaders acting like dhimmis again? Especially through Egypt that has nothing to lose, but the $$$$$ billions from the USA.. Wonder why there are no other posters replying on this one? Could it be they are inured to read the same garbage emanating from Olmert et al...As for this Sulleiman we know his game...I will wait and hope some responders appear to view this latest, should our Govt' become the appeasers they have been for eons. So,if this green light is accepted,WHAT OF OUR BOYS DID THEY DIE IN VAIN? An insult to Israel and all of us Jewish citizens. I will await with bated breath, hoping the reply by us will be NEGATIVE!
9. IF ISRAEL ACCEPTS CEASE FIRE, THEN ITS THE END OF ISRAEL
..............DACON9   (01.15.09)
10. Hamas has not agreed so this is all waffle!
redbourn ,   tel aviv   (01.15.09)
hamas is still making demands and has not agreed to anything close to an unconditionl surrender so what is being talked about? the sides are simply agreeing to agree and nothing has been agreed upon. Hamas is now talking about 'compensation". he he he They're really quite mad! Mike
11. warning to our politicians
Arie ,   BaGolan   (01.15.09)
If anything is agreed to without Gilad Shalit being release, your careers end now!
12. NO TRUCE WITH Hamas. NO ceasefire with psychopaths!
David ,   Hartford USA   (01.15.09)
Islam says it okay to deceive in war. Hamas will not honor any agreement with Israel. Israel MUST NOT give Hamas any breathing room, they must be eradicated if peace is ever to have a chance. Any ceasefire before Hamas is destroyed will give the PM slot to Bibi. Let the IDF finish the job. If Livni truly wants to let Israel know that she okayed this action on moral rather than political grounds, she must let the IDF remove Hamas from Gaza. Anything less will be a disgrace to her personally and to Israel in general. GO IDF! IT'S CLOBBERING TIME! RID GAZA OF HAMAS. G-d Bless and Protect the IDF!!
13. Some people never learn do they?
Jacob ,   UK   (01.15.09)
The IDF has clearly struck a severe blow against Hamas and should the operation continue in the coming weeks then Hamas would probably surrender, just as a Hizbullah official admitted that should the Lebanon war have gone on then Hizbullah would have eventually surrendered. During this current operation I have shown some respect to Olmert for finally seeing the reality in the South and until now refusing Barak's insane cease-fire proposals. But should this 'cease-fire' get the green light then Olmert will lose any respect that he has gained during the war. He leaves office next month and you would think he would like to end his disastrous term on a high note, but unfortunately this does not appear to be the case. The fact that Obama is coming into office in America in less than a weeks time and wants to open up diplomatic channels with Hamas just goes to show that Israel must continue to fight and defeat Hamas before Hamas are legitimised by a nation who swore never to talk to terrorists. I think it is safe to say that the world is going mad with stupidity...
14. its a mistake to stop now ....the nest of vipers need to be
rachel ,   usa   (01.15.09)
taken out or they will continue their terror ......
15. This is a disgrace!
Steve   (01.15.09)
A truce with these savages is despicable. All our young men who bled and died in this battle, all for a truce with animals that have no regard for human life? This is reprehensible! Shame on Olmert. Shame on Livni. Shame on Barak. Shame.
16. ISRAEL DOESN'T MAKE PEACE WITH TERROR
Alfred ,   Sydney   (01.15.09)
If Israel make a peace treaty with Hamas, they are effectively stating that they hate themselves and that they wish that they never made a state of Israel. They are spitting in the face of all the soldiers of all the wars of Israel.
17. All these international do-gooders pushing for ceasefire
(01.15.09)
They are all Jew-haters, from the greatest of them to the least of them. They would just as soon see Israel destroyed. Every one of them.
18. Is Israel starting to buckle, with victory in sight?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (01.15.09)
If Hamas emerges from this conflict unbroken, in charge, and free to rearm, Israel will have blown it big time, and will pay the price in the near future. Moreover, if the IDF withdraws and Shalit is not with them, Labor and Kadima will deserve to be punished in the coming election.
19. arab illness
David Truth ,   Haifa Israel   (01.15.09)
In the 20 years between partition and the six-day war in 1967, the Palestinians, Egyptians and Jordanians made no effort to build a Palestinian state in Gaza or the West Bank. And in the three years since Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, the Palestinians have again squandered an opportunity to start building a state with bright lights, instead focusing on weapons and striking Israel. If the Palestinians and wider Arab world decided to put the development of their own societies ahead of tearing down Israel the conflict would resolve itself quite quickly. Israel cannot be expected to cure the Arabs of this illness.
20. To #15 Steve: Hold your horses!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (01.15.09)
They have NOT, as yet accepted anything, so let's wait and see. Meanwhile, we're kicking Hamas' ass! Our lot have actually done very well and shown the world, including the USA, how to fight terror. They have given the IDF all the time it needed to achieve the goals as laid down in the Vinograd Commission. Also, its pretty bad form to criticize the Government during the battle. We must show them that the people are behind them so they won't be tempted, because of the huge international pressure on them, to cave in. There will be plenty time afterwards and with the election coming, if they screw up now they will pay on the 10th February. You and I do not know what is going on behind closed doors and that's the way it should be. Also, there is a limit to what extent we can ignore the condemnation of the world. Another point to remember, a new USA President will be in office on Tuesday and we know where he stands and its not so good for us. One thing must be made plain to all. No Gilad Shalit no cease fire! According to Ban Ki-Moon, if he can be believed, Gilad is part of the deal.
21. Disgrace or grace
George ,   Canada   (01.15.09)
Disgrace or grace, the operation in Gaza reach its dead-end One option is to cease fire and lower expectation Another is to invade Gaza city with the risk of loosing what has being achieved so far when the dead soldiers will come back in dozens from street fight. Already 1100 dead and 5000 casualties this is the limit the rest of the world can accept and tolerate. Vote for Liberman, he promise to use nuclear bomb next time like on Japan.
22. To all other posters, what are our other options?
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (01.15.09)
Let's be realistic here, what are our other options? Reestablishing Israeli sovereignty over Gaza and taking responsibility over an extra 1,000,000 Arabs? Handing Gaza over to Abbas, thus facilitating the establishment of a Palestinian state? We have much more to gain strategically by leaving Hamas alive and furthering discord among the Palestinians. We cannot and must not risk the establishment of a Palestinian state and the more we let the Arabs back themselves into extremism and self-destruct, the more secure we are in our nation. A few of you may cry about rockets in the south, getting Shalit back and the occasional casualty, but fueling the fires of discord among the Palestinians will cause greater amounts of Arab on Arab violence and spark Arab emigration from the region. This is exactly how we will win this conflict...
23. To Joe #22
Norman   (01.15.09)
I agree with your analysis except for the point of the release of Gilad Shalit. If Israel will demand Gilads release they will give him up. Can you imagine how Hamas leadership is wetting their pants and how they want to stop the war as soon as possible. Israel is foregoing a golden opportunity if it stops the war with Gilad Shalit.
24. Don't stop
Ranger Don ,   Delton, United State   (01.15.09)
The IDF must continue the operation until it controls 100% of Gaza above and below ground, rids the area of all Hamas munitions and eliminates Hamas as an entity. If not, Israel will reap the whirlwind later. Learn from history, if you leave it intact, it will grow back.
25. Foolish
Granny ,   Vermont USA   (01.15.09)
It's foolish to declare a truce before the job is done. Hama will only use it to rearm anyway. Better make it crystal clear in letters ten feet high that the second the first rocket lands in Israel the truce is over.
26. David #15
Steve   (01.15.09)
I've been very supportive of this government's action against Hamas jihadists. I have some sympathy for Jacob #13 who wrote he has "shown some respect to Mr. Olmert for finally seeing the reality in the south....He leaves office next month and you would think he would like to end his disastrous term on a high note," etc. I feel much the same way. Let's not forget, these are the leaders who supported the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Gaza. I gave Friends of Gush Katif a fair amount of my hard earned money to fight this cruel expulsion; perhaps more than I should have given the outcome. Olmert, Livni, Barak, etc., these people support the establishment of a Muslim-terror state in Israel and the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Judea and Samaria. I am shocked after Sharon's horrible betrayal, Israel's Jews voted for this terrible party, Kadima. Why would any self-respecting Jew vote for the expuslion of Jews, vote for retreat in the face of violent jihad; voter for a Muslim terror state in the Jews' God given land? I do give these people the benefit of the doubt. I've been very supportive of this effort every place I can make the case, on talk radio, the Internet, etc. I hope we do not witness another defeat at the hands of these jihadist killer because they will surely paint it as an Israeli defeat -- just as Hezbollah did in August 2006 -- should Israel agree to a truce and ESPECIALLY if Israel leaves without our kidnapped soldier, Gilad Shalit.
27. another bitter defeat for israel, thank you olmert-barak
chaim ,   brooklyn ny   (01.15.09)
the lesson we have to learn from this second defeat israel has suffered under this criminaly insane traitorous self hating leftist pathetic cowardly leadership,is that before you go to war to eliminate the enemy, you have to first eliminate the enemy within. citizens of israel on FEB 10 you have the chance to eliminate this traitorous gangster government through your ballot,PLEASE DO IT. if g-d forbid this criminaly insane gangster government remains in power, you can all start packing your bags, you will not have a country anymore
28. No Gilad no ceasefire
Mark Leaman ,   Maale Adumim   (01.15.09)
Mr Prime Minister please only except a ceasefire on one condition we want Gilad to come home. No Gilad no ceasefire
29. OLMERT, BARAK, LIVNI - GET THE VICTORY!!!
THE VICTORY ,   ISRAEL   (01.15.09)
TO LEAVE A MAJOR MURDERERS ALIVE IS A SHAME!!! DO YOU WANT US TO BE IN THE SAME MUD FEW DAYS THEN? TO LEAVE HAMAS ALIVE WHEN IT IS ALMOST DEAD IS TOP IRRESPONSIBILITY. FINISH THE JOB!!!
30. Gilad Shalit Must Be #1 Priority
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville, USA   (01.15.09)
Not one Israeli soldier should leave that Gaza cesspool until Shalit is handed over. Hamas had better pray that he has not been harmed.
