1. Mumbo Dumbo...Talk about nothing
Al   (01.15.09)
Obama is no friend of Isreal..He is forcing Israel to accept a cease fire which will enable Hamas to get back on board. What part of that that do all of you not understand? Here's a heads up for Obama..look into your history. Every single president who fooled with Israel left office with a very poor legacy. I suggest to you dear sir that you stick to the matters at hand, namely, the economic meltdown of the USA. Let the Jews in Israel handle the situation as they see fit and dont impose solutions in the mistaken belief that it will enhance your presidency. It will not ,,,It will drag you down. A poor America will enable the Russians and the Chinese to assume military adventures. Your job is to ensure that America stays an economic powerhouse, for should she not, the results will be catastrophic for the western world.
2. Obama and the Ceasefire
M. Martin ,   NYC/Tel-Aviv   (01.16.09)
Obama had nothing to do with any ceasefire. Truth be told I have the impression that he views the Arab-Israeli conflict as kind of a sideshow, a distraction from his real agenda of getting the American economy back on course (where we all agree his main efforts should be). He has said nothing especially concrete about the recent fighting and has let Bush deal with it while he crafts an economic plan. HOWEVER, many groups (the UN, Rabbis for Human Rights, etc.) are trying to get him to demand a ceasefire. As far as I know, the Egyptians have been the ones puching and facilitating ceasefire talks. And Barak Obama is NOT the Egyptian president, so... I can easily imagine a kind of blase hands-off attitude towards Israel in an Obama administration as Obama focuses his attention not just on domestic issues but on Iraq and Afghanistan. When the US gets too involved with Israel, THAT's where the trouble starts. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton will likely be Secretary of State so she may try to pick up where her husband left off which would indeed be bad news for Israel. But as for Obama himself he probably sees himself as having "more important business" to attend to.
3. No matter when I am on the Earth, in trouble...
William ,   Israel   (01.16.09)
I'd always rely on the US first to really help, and the UN last....unless I want to get shot at, raped, then blamed for war crimes. Then the UN is #1.
4. #1 - Al - Obama's job
William ,   Israel   (01.16.09)
"Your job is to ensure that America stays an economic powerhouse" That goes against every liberal Democratic belief that swept him into office. His job therefore is to dismantle American economic might, re-distribute wealth to the "have-nots", turn entrepreneurship into socialist welfare, and make America begging pansies in the face of growing global violence and Islamic hegemony. I say he's following that to the letter.
5. UN
colin   (01.16.09)
If Mrs Rice will act and keep her opening speech meanings alive maybe a little ray of sunshine will enter the absolutely corrupt abnoxious United Nations organization. The Islamics are attempting to install the shari law and have overcome all decent applications of the way of democratic life.
6. oh friends .. obama is a good boy ...end
shosho ,   jerusalem   (01.16.09)
7. Treated unfairly?!
GUH   (01.16.09)
Yes it is being treated unfairly- a nation that slaughters over 1000 people must be treated like a nation that slaughtered 1000 people... in a court of law, not a football match (US politicians cheerleading all the way).
8. And just to remind you, Mrs. Envoy
GUH   (01.16.09)
The international body that you are delegated to was deliberately and mercilessly attacked today. Israel has a known history of targeting the UN, reaching back to 1948 when fighters assassinated Folke Bernadotte. How should such nations be treated?
9. Change was it - Obama has changed
Tursas   (01.16.09)
Not even a president yet and 180 degree turn is done...

"GUH" OPENLY REVEALS HIS ILLNESS OF PRIDE & PREJUDICE ONLINE TOWARDS ISRAEL.
11. It's About Time!
Susan ,   DC USA   (01.16.09)
I can't remember any other president coming out & saying how useless & biased the UN is.
12. Who created Hamas?
sharpinchitown ,   Chicago, Illinois   (01.16.09)
How can we fix this? Israel created Hamas as a counter to the PLO...and now the Palestinians are paying for that illegitimate child. This is highly unfair. What is the solution when Israel's own creation is "paying her back One would almost think it was done intentionally to always have an excuse for killing Palestinians.
13. willfully and unfairly
David ,   Perth, Australia   (01.17.09)
Dolt! Israel is a rogue tyranny and it does it own damage to its international standing by being a racially bigotted aggressive lying stealing bully! Go back to the '48 borders. Pay reparations. Willfully help to establish Palestine, Islamic or not. Then, and only then, should Israel expect respect and support. Until then the only willfulness and unfairness is on the Israeli side. WAKE UP!
14. Re#11 - Yes!
Christy ,   Boston, US   (01.18.09)
Personally, I'd like to see the US demand yearly audits of where the UN monies (some our tax money) goes. I.E.: X number of people in country A were supplied with fill-in-blank, at a cost of Y units of money per person. The UN needs a complete overhaul for me to take it seriously anyway. It's too corrupt as it is. There is little oversight and no accountability. I want to be sure more money is spent on goods & services to the needy vs. UN salaries & benefits.
