1. The bribes go all the way up the ladder ...
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (01.18.09)
Don't kid yourself, Egyptian bureaucrats always get their cut - the bribes go right up the ladder. Anyway, Egypt is an enemy nation despite a phoney peace treaty - anything that hurts us is fine with them. Counting on Egypt is something only delusional or dishonest politicians can talk about with a straight face.
2. Just like Iran, Egypt becomes a proxy
(01.18.09)
3. Dr. Keidar, I cannot wait for your next article
Proud Israeli, Jew! ,   Haifa, Israel   (01.18.09)
Thank you Dr. Keidar for yet another informative and helpful article. I wish people like you had more involvement with governing Israel or at least in representing it.
4. EGYPT'S REGIME MEANS ISRAEL. NOT ACCEPTED IN ISLAM WORLD.
Atilla Karagözoğlu   (01.18.09)

6. Good Stuff Prof. Kedar -- Egypt and Arms Smuggling
Abu Shammai ,   Jerusalem   (01.18.09)
Prof. Kedar has given the reader a number of highly valuable insights into the reasons why Israel cannot expect Egyptian cooperation in preventing arms smuggling. This is a valuable service.
7. A reading lesson
chaim ,   Arad   (01.18.09)
Has anyone in government, or our religious rabbi bothered to read Yesha'yahu (Isaiah) 31:1-3? Makes good reading on a cold night with a hot cup of coffee.
8. at least a wise man in this dumb country
Hamuda ,   gaza   (01.18.09)
The author understands a fact that everybody in Gaza and Sinai understands, this clearly emphasize the non-professionality of Israel politicians.
9. Mordechai Kedar for PM
Steve   (01.18.09)
Please Dr. Kedar, please consider running for Prime Minister as an independent. You are perfect for the job, you know what needs to be done, and you are not corrupted by the political BS that plagues many politicians today. We could use a breath of fresh air, but more importantly, we could use someone who knows what hes doing. By the way, I am serious.
10. 'they make a living by smuggling women and drugs to israel'
MC ,   UK   (01.18.09)
So Israel is being an accomplisher to the smuggling of women and drugs! What can we expect from Egypt or any other country? We are our own worst enemy!
11. SHOULDNT MT SINAI BE APART OF ISRAEL???
Andrew ,   Miami,FL   (01.18.09)
12. 8# That's why you are being bombed!
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (01.18.09)
Because your people are brilliant. As well as yourself. Two can tango at the firing line. I only hear your people screaming to stop the little skirmish.
13. conclusion
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.18.09)
I personally do not agree, but Dr. Kedar is confirming what only the Ihud Leumi and Right of them are saying: the "peace" with Egypt was a mistake. Either Egypt is an enemy state that allows Hamas to arm and attack Israel or Egypt is an ineffectual corrupt country that does not control its own borders. In either case, Israel and world peace would have been better served with a blossoming Yamit, Israeli tourism on the Red Sea and energy independence.
14. Kedar knows his stuff, even put al Jazeera in its place
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (01.18.09)
You can still find the video of Kedar's interview on YouTube (in Arabic with sub-titles). Kedar really showed them what's what. While it's not quite as bad on the Israeli side (where Bedouin trackers often pursue Bedouin smugglers), Israel is indeed too squeamish to confront the issues of polygamy and illegal settlements among the Bedouin. That's why their population is exploding. But just as the war in Gaza was made worse because smuggling was allowed to go on for too long, the damage done to the south will only get worse until Israel establishes the Rule of Law among its own Bedouin.
15. #8 More Than Can Be Said For Hamas
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville, USA   (01.18.09)
It's sad that the Hamas morons have brought such death and destruction to Gaza and will keep doing it. Hamas is too blinded by Islamic hatred to know that they have already lost. If Hamas accepts a ceasefire, it will show that it is beaten and if it does not stop rocketing Israel then the Israeli army is fully justified in responding and will have increased international legitimacy because it has declared that it is ready to stop fighting. Who is dumb now?
16. Egypt counted herself victorious
Debra ,   UK   (01.18.09)
In 1948 Egypt said" We lost the war but won the propaganda. We shall not absorb the Arabs but leave them in refugee camps"...to claim the land. The propaganda swept the left and has now become a global agenda. The right has always known but nobody listens to them.
17. Prof. Kedar misses the point completely, its not about Rafah
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego   (01.18.09)
The issues of bribes, beduoin and corrupt police have as little to do with it as tunnels to Rafah. The real issue is illegal missiles Egypt moves into demilitarized Sinai, a major violation of the 1979 Peace Treaty. That must be the pressure point. Israel must demand massive US pressure on Egypt (cut off of arms, aid and spare parts) to enforce the existing Sinai peace. Or US-brokered "deals" are worthless, and the 'RoadMap" ends. Israel can by itself guarantee an end to smuggling by permanently holding South end of Gaza (3 mile wide corridor), leaving a unified Rafah to Egypt. The tunnels, bribes and bedouoin become irrelevant, and Hamas withers and dies.
18. Hamas will rebuild
Anthony David Marks ,   Israel   (01.18.09)
Hamas built up an enormous arsenal of weapons right under the noses of the Egyptians. Either the Egyptian police are completely hopeless or they are on the Hamas payroll. Will anything change? Not likely.
19. the next opinio here will be...
(01.18.09)
noam livne, doesn't go to miluim??? wanna bet?
20. The Egypt-Gaza border crossing should be exclusively ...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (01.18.09)
The Egypt-Gaza border crossing should be exclusively under Israeli control. Israel should make no concessions to Hamas. The Egypt-Gaza border crossing should be exclusively under the control of Israel. The only second possibility should be the free choice of the inhabitant of Gaza to emigrat to other Arab countries (most of these countries are not very populated and can easily integrate them). The time has come for these people to stop with politics and terrorism and search for a solution for their families based on well-being and peace. That is the real solution as explained at : http://xrl.us/bi5c8
21. hamas
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (01.18.09)
So,what's the solution?there are 2 possibilities, hamas rebuilds, and continues firing casams on shderot, and Israel pays them a visit every 2-3 weeks,or hamas will follow in the footsteps of hizbulla,a lot of barking, no biting.
22. I do not agree with the article because the bedouins have
Gisele ,   Beirut   (01.18.09)
I know the bedouins do smuggling but to reach Gaza they have to go through Rafah , which is LOCKED and it has not one but hundreds of Police officers guarding it . Yes the bedouins do smuggling to LIVE because there is nothing for them in sinai , no infrastructure , no health care no jobs , egypt has simply forgotten about them. it took away land they used for their cattle , to build its fancy resorts while they watch and starve . they had to find a way to survive and live . IF they wanted to help Gaza , they would have to cross the gate of rafah and they CANT , there is a large long wall and hundreds of police officers policing the rafah borders so Gazans can go through and seek help , food and medicine in Egypt that s the sad reality . I wish a painful end to Mubarak .
23. Do Some reading first
Egyptian3569   (01.18.09)
Right now Camp David allows 750Egyptian” POLICE FORCES ' to control the Egyptian Gaza Borders. Egypt asked to be increased and it was increased to 1500 only. This is clearly insufficient to control smuggling, but Israel refuse to increase it more or allow military personnel West of the Suez Canal. Imagine the reader when his kids killed and wife kids .It is brutal I agree to kill Hamas but don’t play Gods and justify killing babies. Egypt blamed Hamas from day one. Remember other fact: Politicians speak lies 50% of time and this applies to all countries democratic like Israel or not like Egypt
24. Soo many ways for hamas to get re-armed
sarah ,   manchester, UK   (01.19.09)
when there is a will, there is a way...
25. How come US arms are allowed to be given to israel!
sarah ,   manchester, UK   (01.19.09)
Hamas should not have weapons and Israel can.. how is that fair???! for every action there is a reaction.
26. Egypt provide arms to Hamas
Gerry ,   Boston   (01.19.09)
Very simple. Arms get by boats and air to Egypt and Egypt sends them to Gaza, together with people from Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, etc., all folks that want to die. In return, Barak and Livni may visit Egypt
27. Stupid sarah, Hamass#ole are terrorist they don't fight fair
they deserve hell ,   only   (01.19.09)
28. What benefit will Egypt get from supplying arms to HAMAS? No
Egyptian3569   (01.20.09)
To # 26. Egyptian political interests are against Hamas. as they are an offshoot of Moslem brotherhood and Iran. All moderate Arabs hate Hamas and want it gone, Only Iran and syria support Hamas. Egypt respect Israel rights to live in peace and kept the peace treaty for 30 years. Borders are long and include both land and sea. Hamas is a parasite and need to be removed but the problem is that many Gazans civilian support them.
29. Sinai Bedouin
Emanuel Paltiel ,   Montreal Canada   (01.20.09)
The problem is Zionist occupation of Arab lands, you hate-mongerer. The Bedouin feel solidarity with the Gaza people and are not the lap-dogs of Mubarak.
