5. not exactly an "honest broker" for peace
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (01.19.09)
and i still wonder why america has any reason to be an "honest broker" as is demanded by the islamists in the pal/israeli conflict. no one else does it and, more importantly, there is not much of anything the palestinians stand for that has anything to do with american democratic and libertarian values.
6. Thank you for your comments. We appreciate them.

7. "the likes of which has never been seen before"
5th generation ,   Israel   (01.19.09)
Propagandist &*#% like the "people" he supports and manipulates. Suddenly the centuries of Arab-driven, British, Dutch, German, Russian etc. slaughter have mysteriously vanished. For Assad and his ilk, ignorance is bliss. Oh, and "balance of power"? LMAO. Who are you kidding? No matter how much lube you use, we still understand what "bend over" means.
8. Egypt's merely opportunistic and temporary peace with Israel
Ben Tzur ,   Melbourne, Australia   (01.19.09)
It is often stated that Egypt has made peace with Israel. However, in this article Mubarrak is quoted as promising that when the Arab states are more powerful, or Israel is weaker, then Egypt will make war on it together with other Arab states. This explains why the antisemitic incitement and anti-Zionist demonization is promoted by the government in newspapers and declarations, why there are no cultural exchanges nor tourism allowed into Israel from Egypt, etc., etc. Egypt does not really want peace with Israel, it wants war and annihilation too, only it is somewhat more rational and calculating than the Palestinians and besides, the American aid saves Mubarrak's regime. This is an important point that Israel's leaders should take to heart. Egypt's "incompetent" policing of the tunnel-smuggling is really of a piece with all this. Israel must not rely on Egypt to reduce the Hamas threat.
9. oil prices
Fabio ,   Rome, Italy   (01.19.09)
Oil prices are falling, despite Gaza crisis and OPEC's production cut. Bashar "Iran's puppet" Assad hasn't got it yet.
10. "What happened in Gaza is a crime." Assad
Murray of Montreal   (01.19.09)
I agree wholeheartedly with President Assad. The hijacking of the peaceful Palestinians by Hamas and using women and children, mosques and hospitals for their own end is a crime. As far as Assad's new name for Israel; " a rose is a rose, and by any other name would smell as sweet."
11. Well, I'll be,.....
Gideon Reader   (01.19.09)
Abbas was involved in the "Gaza Crisis???" Who knew?

We rename Assad "The Douchebag of Damascus". Whose with me?
16. FATAH+HAMAS=OSLO
Jewish Refugee ,   U.S.A.   (01.19.09)
These two groups would not have become what they are now if it wasnt for OSLO. Rabin, Peres, Barak, Olmert, are the architects. http://israelactnow.blogspot.com/
17. Ban stresses "Arab unity !
DT ,   TA Isr   (01.19.09)
Arabs unify !!!?? That is the joke of the centuries! Just hope they keep fighting each other
18. No agreement between Olmert +Abbas on any core issues
Sam ,   Canada   (01.19.09)
Even without Hamas, Abbas could not reach agreement with Olmert on any core issue. This is relevant because world leaders are always calling for a permanent settlement. it's not enough to have some individual opinions of leaders and bloggers. We need to have the collective opinions of Israelis and Palestinians on the issues of refugees, borders,Jerusalem and security. We don't even know if there are majorities on both sides willing to compromise. We are getting a lot of speeches with no investigation of where MOST people really stand. Peace has become dependent on the views of a few leaders on both sides.
19. Ban should be banned
Yiannis Kareklas ,   Athens Greece   (01.19.09)
Assad should watch for his ass ( how about human rights in Syria ) , and Mubarak is already damned. Arab states = Association of Arab Terrorists and Islamo fascists who want to conquer the world by the power of their sword and lead the world into obscurantism.
20. Muarry the moron #10
Rob ,   NJ USA   (01.19.09)
You have been sitting on your stupid french ass too long. Asad is nothing but a 2-bit coward like you.
21. It's a very close competition .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (01.19.09)
Which is the most useless organization on the face of the Earth? The UN or the Arab League? For the life of me, I just can't decide.
22. #21
Fabio ,   Rome, Italy   (01.19.09)
I guess that Arab League is useless and UN is even harmful...
23. #16
David ,   USA   (01.19.09)
My understanding of the Ivri language is very limited, however, I believe the word OSLO means "toilet seat." This would fit quite well with what was produced in that so called accord.
24. Assad. 'What happened in Gaza is a crime'
Hans ,   Germany   (01.19.09)
Yes my dear, done by Hamas. Or is Israel allowed to throw rockets on Syria without any reaction?
25. Ban urges Arabs to back Abbas......
Lior ,   Israel   (01.19.09)
so he can make another trip to visit terrorist Samir Kuntar in Beirut!! Money is tight you know....... Hope some is left over so Abbas can make 'more' posters for more places in the territories which show all of Israel, Palestine. In the mean time not a squeak about the Kurds. If anyone is to believe this is not all about the JEWISH PROBLEM they are bold face liars. As for the picture of Ban and Abbas, has anyone seen such shit eating grins in your whole life?!
26. Egypt has been relentlessly building up its armed forces.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (01.19.09)
Apart from Iran, Israel also faces threats particularly from the Arab states Syria and Egypt–both because of the direct and indirect aid they supply to the terror organizations surrounding Israel, and because of their own hostility and military build-ups. Egypt has been relentlessly building up its armed forces and absorbing state-of-the-art American weaponry since the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. Syria is militarily weaker but its ballistic-missile threat to Israel (along with Egypt’s) is very serious. For a global explaination of the Middle-East reality : http://xrl.us/biz8x
27. Abbas helped the IDF kill Hamas! Haaaaaaaaaaa!
Stupid Hamas   (01.19.09)
28. More failure from more fools
Steve from Raleigh   (01.19.09)
Abbas is the lamest of lame ducks. He's essentially the mayor of Ramallah at this point.
