1. lazy jerks; send them in jail
smith   (01.20.09)
2. He deserves jail time
Steve   (01.20.09)
Desertion in a time of war is one of the lowest, most cowardly acts a soldier can commit. Hopefully he gets court-martialed and taught a lesson.
3. Why were they not sent to Sderot and...
Cynic ,   USA   (01.20.09)
told to stand in the street and defend agaist the rockets.
4. i beginning to think
maariv   (01.20.09)
that ynet workers are left-activists. this "news" is no news and has no reason to be reported. one refusenik wont make a change. whoever published this report is a rookie.
5. loooooooooosers
chaya   (01.20.09)
the soildiers who refused orders to evacuate gush katif were right and more soidiers should have followed them. but to disobey orders when the army is finally doing its job because of the "poor" arabs is gaza in disgusting. if the arab leaders in gaza dont care about using their people as sheilds why should we. our saftey is much more impt. then theirs.
6. Brave voices of reason
Peter Morris ,   New Zealand   (01.20.09)
The intoxication will soon wear off and Israel may come to its senses. The crimes committed by Israel these last three weeks have been the worst since the advent of TV. It seems there was a competition amongst the IDF of who could committ the greatest crime. The so called refuseniks are the real heroes and time will vindicate them.
7. What is AWAL?
frenk ,   sub-sahara   (01.20.09)
And when will you employ English speakers?
8. Cowardice in disguise
Frank ,   Canada   (01.20.09)
One more example of cowardice disguised as an ethical action.
9. deport them to Gaza, let them live among the poor muslims
Great White North ,   Canada   (01.20.09)
10. Making the I.D.F. a credible deterrent once again is a ...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (01.20.09)
Making the I.D.F. a credible deterrent once again is a national imperative. When Israel integrated its Jewish identity into its national life, it easily defined its enemies, all its enemies, and restored the spirit of the I.D.F and its deterrence. Now that we can have confidence in the IDF once again, real independence will be much more than a slogan. Independence is not created by poses and declarations, but by military power, economic prowess and national determination. Some details about the I. D. F . at : http://xrl.us/oq28g
11. Reservist arrested for refusing to take part in Gaza op
EDGY ,   Long Island, USA   (01.20.09)
Livneh's comments were not better than those broadcast by Israel's enemies. Had he been sincere and not a coward, he should have made the same comments before he received his notice to report for duty. His failure to do so speaks volumes about his true motivation. Fortunately, he is the exception and not the rule. Though I live in the United States, I know many brave American young men who volunteered to serve in the IDF, my oldest son among them. Another of my sons is in the process of enlisting in the IDF and had an interview today in that regard. There isn't much thay can do that would make me feel prouder than seeing them put into action the words mouthed by many, applauded by more and ignored by most. How is it that Livneh, who, I assume, was raised in Israel and received an Israeli education could be so faithless, yet the American volunteers I know so motivated? I suggest that the people who have the power and ability to prevent more Livnehs answer that question and then do something about it.
12. For ypur info
Rick ,   New York   (01.20.09)
The parents of these people paid money to IDF. There is no such thing as no space in jail. 14 year old Jewish girls are in jail for nothing.
13. Pour encourager les autres
Gideon Reader   (01.20.09)
No problem. One has the right to refuse service. However the military has the both the RIGHT & DUTY to place these cowardly a__holes in the Brig on Piss n' punk, until they are little old leftists, with grey hair. If it Gaza 2008-09 was a declared war, I would shoot the both of them at dawn, in view of Gaza, and the assembled ranks of their units. (BUT no last cigaret. It's bad for the health you know.)
14. They were scared to death.
naro ,   nyc   (01.20.09)
In every army there are a small number of individuals who are simply scared to death to fight in war. It is a sign of their weakness that is all. The cowards usually try to couch their cowardice with moral indignation.
15. refusnik and grossman
marcel   (01.20.09)
Grossman wrote a piece in haaretz about developing speech with the arabs to reorder how israel lives in the middle east and and that israel should talk even to hamas.yes, okay, you can talk to hamas but lets give them some credit-they want israel gone, period. This goes back to 48. Oslo tried speech and it led to death and missiles.Grossman for obvious reasons is saddened by his son's death which is normal. However, the arabs are a warrior mafia group of clans smothered in islam. Peace is antithetical to their nature and that is why they fight amongst themselves, fatah and hamas, hezbollah and falange, its all the same bullshit. What you arrive at is a series of truces underlined by israeli deterrence. When gazans say they don't want israel tanks to come in to gaza to kill them, that is deterrence because they will pressure hamas to think twice. Until the education system of the arabs changes there is no chance of co-existence. Netanyahu will be the new PM perhaps in coalition with kadima and Beiteinu. Good riddance to olmert who was a giant failure.Barak did okay in his position and the IDF did pretty well in its asymmetric methods. He is 66 years old, has a long record . Its best that he retire because he has done all he can do. Yaalon would be a spirited choice and his appointment alone would raise eyes in tehran as he has an excellent record in reversing terror. Iran should be number one on israel's agenda.IDf has to figure the best method of blocking tunnels- which may be found in engineering a flooding of the whole area.
16. I don't understand
Patrick ,   Los Angeles   (01.20.09)
I can understand that they have some moral issue (that by the way I have not at all - I started to argue with a palestinian girl in Pasadena, she was a bad faith person reciting the usual litany: you stole my house, I am not free of my movement, you kill civilian, etc - This could be true except that they are 100% responsible for it) but I don't understand that those soldiers do not feel the superior need to be with their brother warriors! They are just worthless and don't deserve the israeli citizenship when you think of Dov Gruner who wrote in his jail before being hung that he didn't regret any second to have fought for the creation of Israel. He was a man whose memory deserves to be recalled not a emasculated deserter.
17. The moral arrogance of these refuseniks boggles the mind
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (01.20.09)
I'd suggest jailing them in Sderot so they'd appreciate the threat, but thanks to the efforts of those who did NOT refuse, the town is quiet... for now.
18. who are these nutjobs? conquering? lol. hardly...youd think
Jae ,   Lynn USA   (01.20.09)
she was a hamas mouthpiece. just goes to show you what happens when the rabid left wing controls the TV in israel
19. Traitor
Asaf Golan ,   Sugar Land   (01.20.09)
8 years of diplomacy did not stop the rockets. Only the IDF stopped the rockets and only the IDF will stop the rockets. His argument is so disgusting that he is nothing but a traitor. This is the type of filth who would oppose the Warsaw Ghetto uprising because "now its not the time."
20. You'd think Israelis would have learnt
Terry ,   Chicago, IL   (01.20.09)
English by now... You know, with the whole 'owning America' thing and all. "AWAL" in the headline? "Soildiers", "sheilds", "saftey", and "then vs. than" (#5 Chaya). More importantly... You people are pathetic: having the guts to stand up to this nauseating excuse of a military state is now a cowardly act? Kudos to the brave soldier who decided that there is a difference between him and every other murderer in the IDF. Noam Livneh, you are welcome in my home any day. Shalom.
21. It is not morals, but cowardice!
jason white ,   afula,israel   (01.20.09)
Jail them for ten years as an example.

23.  "I have a dream"(c)
Stephen ,   New York   (01.20.09)
If I'd been an Israeli solder, I wouldn't have definitely participate in that humanitarian disaster. Those namby-pamby words from Knesset "we fight on Hamas" have nothing to do with turned up reality of thousand INNOCENT people have been BRUTALLY KILLED. "I have a dream"(c) The current Israeli governors will be judged one day.
24. Lets see now 8 years and
Don Saliman ,   Nahal Oz, Israel   (01.20.09)
getting hit with rockets every day and no big response until now and he still wants Israel to explore all other possibilities. Well Noam, while I thank all the soldiers, reserves and regular including my son to put their life in danger tp protect me,you in this instance for refusing to protect me and others in communties surrounding Gaza (yes I take this personally) get my boos to express my feelings

26. I don't understand some of you
Don Saliman ,   Nahal Oz, Israel   (01.20.09)
8 years of rockets falling into Israel and some of you think Israel is intoxicated and Israel committed war crimes by attacking Gaza, then what in the he---l should Israel do? To some of you who are quiet when rockets are falling into Israel, then condemn Israel,I take that in saying that ,you think that it is ok to attack Isrealis and Jews but Israel has no rights to defend themselves. I suggest you come to Sderot,Beersheva,Ashqelon my Kibbutz for 8 years and live under rocket attacks while going to work to shop,or just to take a nice lovely walk and live under these rocket attacks and then and only then will you be able to crizice Israel.
27. bombing women and children while preventing their evacuation
observer   (01.20.09)
does Israel think that it will regain deterrence by killing women and children, obviously not.
28. respecting this young man 4 the courage 2 stay w/his beliefs
Israeli   (01.20.09)
He has served in the IDF and according to the IDF's ethical code he has the responsibility to violate any order he believes is unethical. He believes that his duties would have taken him to an unethical place. I do not agree with him but give him great honor for respecting his personal beliefs!
29. amused by lack of intelligence exhibited by foreign TBers
(01.20.09)
30. You're gonna be a hero in Iran!
Talula ,   Israel   (01.20.09)
However, you won't get such a warm reception here. Tze, Tze, Tze.
