1. scoop hold the presses Hungarian Jews hoard food
Rami   (01.27.09)
This goes back generations, any Hungarian Jew worth her or his salt hoards food, the generation which came after the holocaust survivors do so as well.
2. What about the all the money collected outside of Israel???
Yonatan ,   NETANYA   (01.27.09)
I can't believe that these survivors have to face such despair, after having lived through the most insane assault against our people. There are tens of thousands of organaizations that raise money to build memorials and museums so that the world will never forget, but why are the survivors not getting any ?? Drastic action has to be taken, and a plan must be marketed and instituted, that families from various communities in Israel (and definitely abroad), each contribute in providing assistance to these poor people, who I'm sure believed that their worries would be over once a Jewish State was created. Come on Am Yisrael, have some respect and start helping these people. After all, a huge majority of us have either parents or grandparents that perished in the Shoah !!!!
3. Not enough US billions for both
The Prophet ,   Ouar   (01.27.09)
Let them starve, we need bombs not food, this is Israel.

can't believe you said this, 'Prophet'- if it was not for those survivers- you would not have an Israel, you moron- . Show some respect! I am appalled to hear about the despair of the survivors- what happened to all the money that has been and is still pouring into Israel? I am sure not all of it is earmarked to buy weapons and expensive airplanes- . There are fewer survivors still living every year- sad to see that the State of Israel does not have respect for its own people. They should have a decent pension so they can live their last years without worry- there is no peace in Israel anyway- but at least they can have decent housing and enough money for food and medication. Is that too much to ask?

Rami, are you Jewish? If I as a Christian (or a European, a Swiss, a brit etc.) make a racial slur like this- you call me an Anti-semite.... you guys are very quick with this... when YOU say it, it is what? A Jewish joke? just wondering- enlighten me.
6. So, he was right....
John ,   Europe   (01.27.09)
Norman Finkelstein was right when he accused ADL and simmilar organizations for making Shoa an industry, taking milions of milions but not giving anything to the true Shoa survivors.
7. Shoah Survivors and a Disorganized Israel
Panda Bear ,   Omaha, USA   (01.27.09)
This is very unfortunate and hard to understand, especially since the government of Israel could have done more for these people prior to now if they had just been more organized. Now it might be too late to adjust fully for the current world wide economic problems. Too, if those giving charity had put more of their money directly into helping people rather than putting them into foundations and endowments that turned out to be run by crooks, maybe things would be better for the poor as well. If people need help now, they can't usually wait for the proceeds of an investment fund to come in order for that help to arrive. Too, economist that do not reccgnize the increasing gap in income levels of their country's population wherein the ratio of poor, middle class, and wealthy are vastly unbalanced as a economic indicator of a troubled economy this also contributes to such current issues. When the number of poor increases and the middle class decreases and the rich get richer, then this is a sign for government to step in and make some adjustments in policy so that the middle class increases again. Otherwise, you wind up in a recession at least, if not a full blown depression economically speaking. Why any government would want to create policies that help make the rich richer and the poor poorer and decrease the level of middle class citizenship downward is just poor management and brings down not just their country but also effects the economies of the world as well. Now we have a situation wherein these Shoah survivors as well as other elderly people are faced with having to hoard food, choose between meds or other life necessities, and worry. And to think that so much of this suffering could have been avoided had people really wanted to make the world a better place. If people had been more thoughtful about helping others on the receivers level instead of their own giving level. Now what can be done? Good thing some of us know well how to depend on HaShem for our help. "I turn my eyes to the mountains; from where will my help come? My Help comes from the L-rd, maker of heaven and earth." Psalms 121:1-2 May HaShem bring His help speedily to those in need right now in Israel and all the world.
8. The money is there..Its the 40K org
Al   (01.27.09)
who make a living schnorring that steal the money. If you know an elderly survivor who doesnt have children..help them..its as simple as that. These friggin org should be hauled before a court for theft and fraud. They are the sheisters. As far as the bloody museums are concerned..close them, save for Yad Vashem. My parents survived and today I support them as should all kids when their parents get old. To those in my generation.(45-65).Support your parents and stop being the shits that you have become. Your parents brought you into this world..the least you can do is to support them in their old age.

10. That survivor from Beer-Sheva is upset that he can't...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel-Aviv, Israel   (01.27.09)
...help his children? They should be helping him! I know a number of Holocaust survivors who have almost nothing, because they gave all the renta from German to their children, instead of saving it for their old age. Of course there were people who didn't take the witergutmachen (what a name!) on principle and people from the former Soviet Bloc who never received it.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.27.09)
Don't you know this : a father can help ten children , but ten children can't help a father . What i can't understand is that many other groups of immigrants came to Israel , also without anything , but made a life . The problem is , i think , mostly with the survivors from the former soviet bloc . They came to Israel as older people , without a decent pension , and no wiederguttmachung of course . They are the needy .
12. $$ aid for poor Jews
Richard ,   Monterey, California   (01.28.09)
If you guys are looking for money for Jews in need, I understand Bernie Madoff sent it all to banks in Tel Aviv and Haifa. Just take it from him. Please.

what I do not understand is: what happened to all the money that has been paid out by Germany, Switzerland, etc. etc. ? It was for the survivors- is it kept by the government? In a bank? Where is it? Israel has been encouraging Jews to come back- now it just HAS to take care of them- the money has to be found- this is undignified, cruel and unworthy of Israel to let its own people live in poverty. This is not news- there was a discussion about it last year already- and still nothing has been done? Shame!
