1. This shows the sham of coexistence
m   (01.28.09)
After all the stories coming out of Yafo, I'm not surprised
2. thats a shame....
eye(-)sis ,   JAHrusalem   (01.28.09)
I would expect things to return to normal and so far, they dont? its understandable that people are afraid to go to arab neighborhoods during war-times - whether its in israeli or palestinian territory. I always shop in the east jerusalem shuk and stopped during the war becuase of alot of demonstrating and rock-throwing, but now we have a (very fragile) ceasefire and have returned to shopping there as there is no violence in east jerusalem anymore. i hope israelis will not continue to keep their business away from arab merchants! things are bad enough as it is - lets not make matters worse. besides - ABU HASSAN IS THE BEST HUMMUS ON THE ENTIRE PLANET !!!! any addicts of abu hassan like myself, surely will not allow this situation to keep us from getting our hummus fix. WE LOVE YOU HASSAN! REST IN PEACE!
3. Perhaps more Jews want Kosher?
Shalom   (01.28.09)
4. Do they display Israeli flags? Kids do National Service?
David ,   Boston, USA   (01.28.09)
If the owners of these restaurants are law abiding Israeli citizens who contribute to the state and community, this is a shame and wrong. If they displayed support for the terrorists, they should leave. The article gives no detals other than number of customers. It doesnt even say who the regular customers were, so there is NOT nearly enough information for a knowledgeable person to make an opinion.
5. None of these arab places are kosher
Yerushalmi ,   Jerusalem   (01.28.09)
Good, so now jews are going to restaurants where there is at least a chance for them to be kosher. I am sure that food will not go to waste, their brethern in gaza are hungry, and they (not jews) should feed them. It is their islamic obligation of zakat. And so, if jews don't eat in arab restaurants, they are going to be better jews (on average), and arabs will be better muslims (zakat is one of pillars of islam).
6. I don't know which Yafo you're talking about, but...
Aharon   (01.28.09)
When I went to Yafo during the second week of the war to eat at Itzik Hagadol there was a big line of Jews standing outside waiting to get into the restaurant, which was packed full. Are we talking about the same Yafo?
7. To number 2
Palestinian ,   East Jerusalem   (01.28.09)
Yes, Abu Hasan is the best hummus in East Jerusalem. It certainly is the best I know the Salah Eddin St. area.
8. David in Boston
Marilyn ,   Adelaide   (01.28.09)
Why should the arabs leave, it is their country you idiot. The Americans who blog here must surely be the dumbest people on this planet except the Israeli's who keep breaking the law and getting away with it.
9. Well..at least the Jews' money is in demand
Arie ,   BaGolan   (01.28.09)
While they scream for our destruction. Umm al Fahm: riots against Jews and the State of Israel-but now that the Jews say screw you and keep your food, there's plenty of non-Arab establishments, you complain; Nazareth has become home of the Muslim Brotherhood seeking our destruction, but come spend your money Jews; Yaffo schools post PLO flags in their classrooms to intimidate Jewish teachers, but hey, that doesn't mean they don't want the Jew money! This is Israel. The arabs either accept all of it, or move to a pali state in an exchange program. By the way, have any of your Arab children engaged in any sort of National Service to aid the community? Thought not!
10. Care for some cheese with the whine?
Arie ,   BaGolan   (01.28.09)
During the war, the Arab sector rioted and pushed for hamasstan victory over the very same Jews they now whine won't visit their establishments. What do they expect? All forgiven? The money is better spent on visiting the Negev and frequenting the local establishments to show our support. When the Arabs decide to stop supporting our enemies and engage the State as our national entity, then things will change. As long as they support traitors like barakeh and islamonazis like haniyeh, let them support their own!
11. Boycott their dreck
Al   (01.28.09)
The sooner they will leave. they are a fifth column ready to do you in. They have shown time and again that they do not respect the state. There are exceptions but few and far between.
12. you can't eat the cake and have it too!
oded   (01.28.09)
arabs with israeli id,s continue to cry out everytime their deeds come back and bite them in their wallets.. israelis are fed up with the arab hypocracy... on one hand they want our buisness, buton the other hand they want us all dead! i say, boycott them all! plenty of good jewish restaurants!
13. Want Arab-style food? Eat at Sefardi/Mizrahi Mis'adot!
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (01.28.09)
Support your brothers first- after all, don't Arab Israelis do the same? Why should Jews be held to a different standard?
14. Our lives are more important than our stomachs!
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (01.28.09)
If arabs do good business in Israel, they must prove loyalty and stop only taking and knifing us in the back. And we,we must start valorizing much more what is essential for our lives than body pleasures and material interests. Israel is too lovely and precious to be wasted in temporal advantages. Let arabs find their way among their owns.Only real brothers(even them being arabs-if they exist) should stay in our midst, and Israel should permeate its land with more and more Jewishness-who adapt ,adapt;who don't...well,ME is big enough.
15. #8 Marilyn
Matityahu ,   Slovenia   (01.28.09)
Occasionally a silly Aussie also comes along to participate the talkback. Funny you mention breaking the law, nothing was broken. And the fact that there are more palestinians in Israel than the aborigine in Australia also speaks for itself.
16. don't jump to conclusions
charicleia ,   USA   (01.29.09)
if Israelis weren't patronizinig Arab owned restaurants during the Gaza op, it wasn't out of hostility, but more likely out of anxiety as to how they would be received and so preferred not to take chances. so don't ramp up any more racist theories that produce the nasty talkbacks.
17. Both Arab restaurants closed?
Mozarella ,   Paris, France   (01.29.09)
18. To No.15 - Ignore her
Anna ,   Melbourne, Australia   (01.29.09)
Don't worry, Marylin is a well known leftie with a total inability to properly analyze or learn anything. She posts responses in many places, all equally shallow and stupid. Unfortunately she is from the crazy left-wing majority that would stubbornly ignore the facts if they get in the way.
19. DUMB AMERICAN
RICK ,   AMERICA   (01.29.09)
NUMBER 8 THANK YOU SO MUCH . I AM ONE OF THOSE DUM AMERICAINS. BUT THANK G-D NOT AS MUCH AS YOU . DAMB RIGHT THIS HILL BILLY SUPPORTS ISRIEL.OVER YOU WANKERS.MY CASA SU JEW CASA. SAFE IN VIRGINIA THANK YOU IDF
20. Maybe if the started acting like their Israelis
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.29.09)
Doing such weird things as National Service, paying taxes, stop flying terrorist flags they might get some business. We have faced an economic boycott by the rest of the Arab world for more than 60 years. Think about that.
21. #8 1,000,000 Jews forced to flee Arab countries. Why?
Liliane ,   Brighton, SX, UK   (01.29.09)
#8. Australia slaughtered many Aborigenes. Why? And 1,000,000 Jews were forced to flee the Arab countries. Why?
22. You are all wrong
Paul ,   Dubai   (01.29.09)
If I am not mistaken, people will avoid places they are hated. After rioting in JAffa and Nazereth, Jews will avoid the places and than it will quite down and things will retun to normal just like after the beginning of the second Intefadah. It is natural and no one should read anything further into it.
23. Restaurants
Jew ,   Israel   (01.29.09)
All Jews should eat kosher anyway.
24. marilyn in adelaide
new york one ,   new york, ny   (01.29.09)
I guess the British who sent convicts to Australia were just accepting the aborigines' invitation to take their land and to kill them with violence and disease. At one point, I suppose the aborigines even asked the white Australians to kidnap their children and raise them as white. Even today, Australia refuses to compensate it's native peoples. Look at your own history before you criticize someone else!
25. The Boycott of Arab businesses should be 100%
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (01.29.09)
"Israeli Arabs", by the statements of the Leaders, Tibi, Zahalka and the like, have clearly stated they are "Palestinians" and therefor have no loyalty nor allegiance to the State of Israel. The State of Israel however, gives them National Insurance, Medical Cover and all the other niceties a democratic society would give to its citizens. While I do not agree with much of what Israel Beiteinu stands for, I do agree that without loyalty their can be no citizenship and I have not supported Arab businesses since the 2000 Intifada. One the other hand, the "Israeli Arabs" will have the chance to choose their direction on the 10th of February. No one would expect them not to be sympathetic to the suffering of the Gazans which has been caused by Hamas but they must realize that, while they have the right to demonstrate, they do NOT have the right to chant "Death to the Jews" and "Death to Israel". I hope my fellow citizens will think twice about where they spend their money! The ball is in the Arab court.
26. To Marilyn #8: And Australia is yours?
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (01.29.09)
Yes, the Whites massacred the Aborigines and experimented on them so I would be very careful about accusing others of taking away a country. Australians don't exactly squeaky clean hands and for the record, neither do the New Zealanders! In any case, Jews have lived here of about 5,000 years and there was no such thing as a Palestinian until June 1967! In fact after Israel liberated the "Territories" in the Six Day War, Jordan washed its hands off them! Maybe you should ask King Abdullah of Jordon to take them back!
27. What, Arabs Don't Eat In Restaurants?
David H ,   Marietta USA   (01.29.09)
Personally, I never liked hummus (other than my sister-in-law's)
28. I dont read Marilyns responses. They make no sense. No fact
David ,   Boston, USA   (01.29.09)
I dont mind people having different opinions, but some people just hate. They prefer to ignore facts and listen to lies and propaganda. They are dangerous and ignorant.
29. I hope the Arab restaurant upstairs at Gali Center in
Rivkah   (01.29.09)
Ramut Gan stayed open. The owners are so kind to disabled Israeli war veterans. One named Yakov and his wife Ronit who were staying at the Apropo Hotel in Tel Hashomer while Yakov had surgery for a new prosthetic leg, took me to that restaurant twice in 2006. The owner would not let Yakov pay for his meal each time because of the sacrifices he made in wartime for Israel. I hope Jews still go to that restaurant. The owner deserves to stay in business.
30. to #7 - palestinian
eye(-)sis ,   jahrusalem - musrara   (01.29.09)
