When Iran and the Hamas praise Turkey for its stand, this sets them back 20 years in wishing to join the European Community. The reason Turkey has not been accepted to the EU has to do with their past Holocaust on the Armenians, invasion of Cyprus, human rights violations, and growing Islamic radicalism. The Prime Minister of Turkey has too many skeletons in his closet and people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Turkey, you are more likely to find yoursleves in an economic union with Syria, Iran, and Pakistan, rather than Europe. Turkish Armed Forces, now is the time to act, before it is too late for the good secular Turks who have kept Turkey normal for the past decades. Act, before the secular Turks will be forced into submission. Go for it, now---take over the govenrment.

Zvi, Thank you for your post and for your honesty. Erdogan and those angry hostile religious lunatics that you see in the media are not the voice of all Turkish people. Most Turks understand the worries of Israel. Some criticise both Israel's and Hamas's actions in Gaza. Secular Turks do not support Hamas or any other armed groups. In Israel there are groups that criticise government's actions too, and that's expected in a democracy. To answer your question why are the secular Turks who are frustrated with Erdogan are quiet? Simply because the seculars have been silenced and targeted by the government. Those religious lunatics were steadily preparing their Islamic changes in Turkey. Erdogan and his friends learnt from their past Islamist experience that an Islamic revolution in a blow would not be successful in Turkey since the military would stop that. So, Erdogan came in a package wrapped up and supported by the international world especially by the EU and the US, his party was/is supported by a wide range of voters such as the religious voters, uneducated poor, right wing liberals, Kurds and some other minorities, and some intellectuals who expected that moderate AKP would bring more freedom to all these groups with the support of the EU. Turkey has been going through quite an oppressive period in the direction of Islamic fascist regime since 2002. So, as Erdogan once said 'they use democracy as a tool, not as an aim.' Since 2002 Erdogan's and AKP's power has steadily been establishing their fascist rule. Secular left wing opposition was demonsrating in thousands in the summer of 2007 and the military also warned about threats to secularism then. But, still the same groups supported AKP in 2007 elections. And, the international world again, especially the EU, slammed the Turkish secular opposition and the military claiming that they were being too nationalist, opressive and damaging the democracy. Almost all leaders of these demonstrations, military officials, academics, politicians, journalists are now jailed without a legal process and there is a great fear in the country among the seculars and the nationalists. People are scared to criticise the government in public. Like now I'm writing this to you and I fear that the government would find my IP address and I might get into trouble because these days they arrest many people claiming that they are preparing a military coup against the government. So, can you understand the fear we are living in? There are opposition parties and they criticise Erdogan and the government on many issues. They clearly stated that Erdogan's defense of Hamas was wrong and dangerous. But, Erdogan and his men run almost all institutions in Turkey now, including most of the media. They target everyone who criticise them, they target the military, academics, the media and the unions, they make up a reason and jail them one by one. I do not know how Israeli people can see that millions of secular Turks are frustrated with Erdogan and most Turks do not agree with his Hamas politics. But these millions of secular Turks have millions of other problems and fears in Turkey. I hope this gives you the general picture here. Good luck to both Turkey and Israel.

NO wonder that when USA asked Erdogan in 2003 a safe passage through Turkey to enter Iraq from the north (in order to oust Saddam Hussain) -- Erdogan refused. And that while Turkey is a NATO member. Thanks for your post. I'm #70 ;) Erdogan passionately supported going on war against Iraq. It was our left wing secular nationalist opposition who refused to go to war. Erdogan was the greatest ally of G.W.Bush and the EU. Erdogan has come to power with the great support of the EU and the US. Because they thought Erdogan and the AKP would be ideal to weaken the secular nationalists and the military in Turkey. But, despite all demonstrations of the seculars and the warnings of Turkish military, EU and the US always supported Erdogan against the followers of Ataturk. Erdogan aims to turn a secular country into a 'moderate Muslim' country which the US and the EU preferred then. The EU and the US together with some others created a monster against the will of seculars and the military. I hope President Obama gets his facts right when it comes to Turkey. Turkey has been a big mystery to the world and unfortunately the West keeps failing to understand us.
