1. Hamas digs tunnels into egyptian homes, cameras useless
Jason ,   sderot israel   (01.31.09)
The bedouin in egypt and hamas have dug thousands of tunnels. They use homes in rafah egypt to smuggle weapons through deep 90 feet tunnels to homes in rafah israel. BBC did a report how hamas and bedouin do this and egypt does nothing. The only way to stop this is to send IDF ground forces and engineers into rafah in the gaza strip and destroy the 2,000 tunnels. Instead kadima is relying on egypt and wants to have turkey patrol gaza and the philadelphia corridor.
2. Egypt openly helps hamas smuggle in weapons
Jason ,   sderot israel   (01.31.09)
The Bedouin makes a lot of money off this and so do egyptian police. Egypt helped hamas smuggle in rockets when they crashed the fence through the philadelphia route. Only Kadima believes egypt. BBC did a report that showed tunnels wide out in the open and egypt doing nothing. There are 2,000 tunnels some 30 meters deep and the only way to stop them is with IDF ground troops and engineers in rafah. Kadima is against idf stopping the tunnels because kadima believes in selling out israel's security. Kadima wants turkey to patrol gaza and the philadelphia corridor. Kadima is working on a deal to give the EU permission to stop idf from entering gaza and have eu patrol shores of gaza and eu at all the crossings as custom agents working with hamas. Kadima was for disengagement so they refused phase 3 of the operation to send idf ground troops to rafah to stop the tunnels. Kadima also refused bunker buster bombs to get at the tunnels on the gaza side because kadima didn't want to anger egypt.
3. sounds great??
eliezer ,   jerusalem   (01.31.09)
yah, now they must smile while they smuggle or else move the openings a few meters away. great thinking Egypt, thats what you're known for....
4. It won't stop the smuggling.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (01.31.09)
It just sounds good in a newspaper article. Even if you accept the idea that Mubarak wants the smuggling stopped (big maybe), you can't count on the Egyptians to really get the job done. One, many Egyptians are sympathetic to Hamas or at least, anti-Israel. Border police are no exception. Second, there is the question of bribery. What's the salary of a border guard in Egypt? Probably less than what I pay for cigarettes. They will be bribed, no if, ands, or buts. And the bribes go right up the bureaucratic ladder. Third, the normal inefficiency of everything done in Arab countries. Only fools, journalists, & politicians believe this BS.
5. Will the cameras also make the arrests?

6. Setting Realistic Expectations
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville USA   (01.31.09)
Expect very little from the Egyptians and you won't be disappointed. Had Mubarak personally felt threatened by Hamas, the tunnels would have been shut down in a week. The Israelis are smart enough to know that if President Mubarak said, "Good Morning," in front of 10 witnesses and put it in writing, it would not make it believable.
7. Smile You're On Candid Camera
Lawrence ,   Safed Israel   (01.31.09)
Look at me ma...I'm Famous.
8. Money talks
Malone ,   Hfx   (01.31.09)
Baksheesh(bribery) is the rule of thumb in Egypt. Practically nothing can be accomplished without it. It's been that way for thousands of years and will not stop anytime soon. As long as someone is willing to pay, there will be someone willing to look the other way.
9. and who guards the cameras
observer   (01.31.09)
a couple of thousands Egyptian security men living in peace along the whole border; how can they secure peace for cameras. Think that those cameras are not anti drug trafficking.
10. stop crying
Egyptian   (01.31.09)
Why we should care about Israel or Gaza? We have only 750 soldiers on the border and they cannot hold back 2 million people. US could not stop illegal immigration from Mexico or even the drugs. So stop crying like babies.
11. Good boy Mubarak, good boooy!! we're proud of you!!!

12. Egypt cannot be trusted.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (02.01.09)
Egypt is a one sided Arab supporter and should not be trusted. Even today, after all these years of “peace”, Egypt is still the world center of anti-Israeli incitement. It has huge militairy expenses while its generals admit that the enemy is Israel. There is no doubt that in case of a general conflict in the Middle-East Egypt will fight in the camp of the enemies of Israel. Differences between Israel and Arabs cannot be brokered by an Arab country. The solution to the Middle-East conflict is described at : http://xrl.us/bi5c8
13. Egypt doesn't want Hamas to get weapons
redbourn ,   tel aviv   (02.01.09)
Egypt isn't a great friend of Israel but it fears Hamas and it's in its interest to prevent the smuggling. Do you see it opening its border with Hamas or even showing any intention to? In this case Egypt and Israel have a shared interest and that is why it will try to prevent the smuggling. Mike
