1. Maybe a next step : expell this mgr Williamson
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.12.09)
Maybe an opportunity for You to do it when visiting Yad Vashem in May . Said from there it would tell us , Jews , that your condemnation of the Shoa is meant seriously , and that the denial of this crime has no place in the Church .
2. Intolerable but they'll accept it anyway
Steve from Raleigh   (02.12.09)
They always do.
3. Are these direct quotes of the Pope?
(02.12.09)
These Euros make me so nervous. I have noticed the Pope saying things like "Holocaust denial is intollerable", but he doesn't seem to get to saying that "minimizing or denying the Holocaust is a LIE and those who do it are LYING LIARS and EVIL." Makes me wonder what he actually believes himself and how much "need for research" he thinks is ok.
4. CHARLES
Lisa ,   switzerland   (02.12.09)
he IS for all intents and purposes expelled- he cannot celebrate mass, he is forbidden to preach, he was removed from his post as a teacher and priest at the seminary in Argentina,he is persona non grata, he was told to recant- apologize publicly... (he is waffling on this one...but he wont have much more time). His order is under investigation- many Catholics have left the church (me included) we feel strongly about the Holocaust and the Jews..... The order has distanced itself from the church after Vatican Two...(1967) by refusing to adopt the teachings of the Council ( liturgy not in Latein, remove the Goodfriday- anti-semitic prayers, etc.) . The Pope wanted to give them another chance to come back- unfortunately there was not enough research done into the doings of the split order and its members.... I personnally think this was a major slip up in the 21st century... it takes about 3 minutes to find out ALL about the order and Williamson... this is why people are so outraged about it... I believe all people should visit Yad Vashem and the camps- school children in Germany have to do it as part of their education- it is high time some of the older people were forced to do it too. Some people are anti-semites, there will always be that, but many people are just plain ignorant- . Unfortunately there are many ignorant people in the world- and there is NO EXCUSE for that.
5. RABBIS THAT MET HIM ARE INTOLERABLE.
pope no crosses ,   at wall.......DACON9   (02.12.09)
CROSSES ARE SYMBOLS OF OTHER gods.they are not permitted at the kotel. IF YOU ROME RESPECT JEWS DO NOT INTIMIDATE JEWS BY WEARINGYOUR crosses like your last contingent did last year. by the way: jeus is dead and even viagra cant make him rise DACON9 jewswithviews@gmail.com
6. well said Lisa. thank you. ignorance is a sin
(02.12.09)
comes from the word ignore. it is a choice and therefore one is held acountable for their ignorance..
7. #5 DACON9
Lisa ,   switzerland   (02.12.09)
first you condemn him for saying nothing- or not enough, now you condemn everybody else- for apologizing- what do you want ALL of us to do- ? Kill ourselves so you finally have just 'perfect' people left in your own wolrd?. it is difficult to please the ohhhh so perfect people- isn't it? what does Jesus (you wrote jeus? that is Jews in Catalan- slip of the tongue?) have to do with this? Do we make snide remarks about you waiting for the Messiah?- Sorry if you feel 'intimidated' by a cross- you are a bitter old man- #3: please read up in this- you are making assumptions- 'these Euros' make you nervous?
8. Lisa , maybe "excommuniate" would be more
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.12.09)
approprieted ?
9. The Pope is blowing like a candle in the wind!
(02.12.09)
The Pope directly called upon Bishop Williamson to RECANT. According to centuries old dogma of the Catholic Church if Bishop Williamson doesn't RECANT he is violating a direct Papal Order and the Pope must EXCOMUNICATE Bishop Williamson! No amount of babble from the Pope about Holocaust denial can remove the Pope's order to Bishop Williamson. He must RECANT or face EXCOMMUNICATION!
10. Ironic that a German needs to educate a Brit
Jake   (02.12.09)
on the evils of Jew-hatred and Holocaust denial. It makes one stop and think.
11. All sizzle, no steak
Sarah ,   New York, USA   (02.12.09)
Okay, I'm Jewish, I know Holocaust denial is intolerable. Words are just words. I would like to see if this Pope has the courage of his (alleged) convictions: Why not issue a papal bull (interesting word for "edict") announcing that Holocaust denial is contrary to the dogma of the Roman Catholic Church, and any Roman Catholic who suggests that the Holocaust did not happen is subject to excommunication. Maybe Mel Gibson can make a movie about it.
12. WILLIAMSON WANTS PROOF, BOOKS HE READ IN 80'S SAY OTHERWISE
dp   (02.12.09)
it's a lot more simple than people think, here is a man who chose to educate himself with a revised historical analysis of the Holocaust. He clings to these beliefs b/c he figures why would someone take the time to write it down if it wasn't true. Many things are written that aren't true, choosing false history over truth
13. #9 exactly
Lisa ,   Switzerland   (02.12.09)
he has been excommunicated once before- he was ordered to recant- he will be expelled from the church. Frankly, I think Williamson had enough time to think about it...... in the meantime- many people have taken action and spoken up. I think it is a positive step that people are voicing their intense displeasure with the way this has been handled and are taking action( I am talking of people within the church: ordinary people, priests, bishops, cardinals) and politicians. I think the Jewish community is underestimating the number of non-Jewish people that are clearly standing up for Jews this time. This is a step in the right direction.
14. Lisa from Switzerland u r 100% correct! thank you
(02.12.09)
Truth be told at this point in time Israel, the Israeli Rabbinate and the various Jewish organizations throughout the world have done their job. As a Jew and Israeli I believe it is time for us to be diplomatically silent and see how the Pope behaves. As I recall a direct Papal order to recant is time bound...let us then wait out the time and see if the Pope in fact excommunicate. If he doesn't then we can rally once again. I do believe that the most effective work in this matter was done by Chancellor Mrs. Merkel...this because the Pope is a head of State and head of Church but at the end of the day he is also a German national who lived through the Nazi era so he really does know better. The fact that Chancellor Mrs. Merkel strongly reminded him of what happened to the Jews during the Nazi era is in my opinion the best that could be done. All the best to you, Lisa, from Jerusalem
15. Our invitation is the favor, not the popes visit!
David Turner   (02.13.09)
16. The Truth
Mikhale ,   Seattle, USA   (02.13.09)
Let's be honest...much of Christianity and the Catholic Church's theology is based on the need to at once accept the legitimacy of the Jewish religion (they believe in the old testament stories, too) and to argue against the legitimacy of Judaism nowadays (both religions can't be right). Considering the dissonance between these two theologies early Christian (and therefore European) history revolved in large part around forcing Jews to convert, murdering them, or punishing them somehow (ghettoization, expulsions, etc.) in order to "prove" the "truth" of Christianity. The Holocaust and other pogroms throughout Europe are merely more modern manifestations of this necessity. I think Europeans and Christians need to completely face the demons of their past and reconcile it with their current beliefs or their religion will die off. The only other option is either to justify Jew-hatred on more modern terms (usually observed by delegitimizing the Jewish people's right to a state and self-determination), or to completely revise history (Williamson and many others). In other words, without scapegoating Jews it is hard for Christianity to thrive the way it once has.
17. there was a brilliant text written about all this

18. Dacon9

You are just as filled with hatred as the antisemites are. Sadly, your too blinded by your own hypocrisy to understand this. I pray God softens your heart. And guides you into the way of all truth.
19. 7 Lisa: False Allegation
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (02.13.09)
I frequently criticize Dacon9. Unlike many tb-ers, however, I analyze content rather than attacking messengers with baseless allegations. In this case, please quote where Dacon9 "condemn[s Joseph Ratzinger] for saying nothing- or not enough, now you condemn everybody else- for apologizing." I don't find any basis for your allegation in his message. What I want Christians to do is what Mr. Ratzinger is doing: admit Christian complicity in the Shoah and the Christian history of misojudaism and then firmly repudiate it in all of its forms. You cannot do the latter while denying the former--which includes blameshifting to Catholics, fringe fanatics, etc. Those are simply contra-historical lies. Orthodox Jews neither profess nor pretend to be perfect; merely struggling to do our sincerest to live according to the precepts of Torah as set forth by the Judaic beit din system (Halakhah). Your remarks are out of order and offensive. Dacon9's remark was also out of order but he is infamous for being an undisciplined ranter (and probably a relatively uneducated and impulsive teen rather than a bitter old man)... and it doesn't justify your descent into the same behavior. I correct you and not him because I think you may profit from correction and he won't. I explain all of this, however, to confirm Dacon9's primary point: the symbol of supersessionist displacement theology, misojudaism and persecution of Jews for millennia--the cross--at the Kotel, a synagogue or any other Judaic site is inappropriate, offensive and hurtful to Jews beyond description. I recognize that Christians don't regard themselves as idolaters. At Judaic sites, however, it is Judaic sensitivity that governs what is appropriate or offensive, not rival Christian claims. Mr. Ratzinger's visit in the garb of an office forcibly, invalidly and illegitimately wrested from the 15th Netzarim Paqid (Yehudah ha-Tzadiq) in 135 C.E. (by the first Christian bishop, Markus; see again Eusebius) and representing millennia of persecution reaffirms Christian bad taste and insensitivity. Mr. Ratzinger's scheduled visit is a separate matter from his handling of Shoah (The Nazis' "Final Solution for Jews") Denial. It is reasonable to accept the former while protesting the latter. 20. Clarification of my previous post
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (02.13.09)
"It is reasonable to accept the former while protesting the latter." should read: "It is reasonable to accept Mr. Ratzinger's current repudiation of Holocaust denial while protesting his scheduled visit to Yerushalayim."

I pray the Jewish, Muslim and Catholic Communities can reconcile all differences and work together to help bring as much peace to this world as possible. We are true exiles in this world of self love and materialism.

Joseph, I admire your prayer for peace, but I wish to point out the following: Jews have never run rampant over Moslem or Catholic communities. The reverse is NOT true. So while I respect your views, forgive me if I find them just a tadbit pious and useless. Jews have never been about self-love or (contrary to popular belief) materialism. Jews have always been about kindness, decency, contribution and survival. The first three have been easy. The fourth has not. I listen to the current pope speak about "building bridges" to the Jewish community on the one hand, and I see what he does on the other hand: propose pope Pius XII (a Nazi collaborator) for beatification and rehabilitate a virulent anti-Semitic bishop. Forgive me if I am just a tadbit skeptical. I know what the Roman Catholic Church has done to Jews in the past; I'm hopeful about the future, but -- well, let's face it; Roman Catholics have a lot to answer for. Forgive my sarcasm. Seven-eighths of my family disappeared up the chimneys of various crematoria. It wasn't all the fault of the Nazis. They had a host of willing Roman Catholic collaborators.

28. Bishop Williamson
Don Schenk ,   Allentown, PA, USA   (02.13.09)
How about Jewish organizations condemning anyone who promotes "The Myth of Hitler's Pope," to quote the title of a book by Rabbi David G. Dalin?
29. To: Muslim observer at No. 27
Sarah ,   New York City, USA   (02.13.09)
Care to tell me what your imam was saying while 6,000 missiles were raining down on Israel from Gaza in the name of Allah? How about when suicide bombers were murdering innocent Israeli civilians in the name of Allah? When parents in Gaza were selling their children to be suicide bombers in the name of Allah? Frankly, Muslim observer, the evil that has been done in the name of Jesus Christ and the evil that has been done in the name of Allah sicken me to my very soul. I thank G-d every day of my life that He saw fit to make me born a Jew.
