1. Last elections proved that the norm in Israel is Right wing
adam eliyahu   (02.25.09)
By that definition, left wing is extemist. Does that mean the Shin Bet is going to start arresting and operating against the left since they are the unstable, dangerous, extremist element? And when a government ignores a democratic expression of the citizens, it is fascism. Israel now has an elitist minority that does not reflect the peoples' choice. The government uses the ,ilitary in direct action against its own civilians. There is a branch of the secret service that arrests people for political beliefs deemed innapropriate and jails them with no charge. The press can't be believed because it has been caught propogating lies the government wants spread. The courts a re a poltical tool. It makes russia of the '80s seem like a friendly place.
2. Well said
steve ,   tel aviv   (02.25.09)
But the Israeli media won't have any of it.
3. THE EXTREMIST !!!.
Orao Stranka. ,   Tsarigrad u Srbia.   (02.25.09)
Who's the extremist? History shows that 'extremists' can be right while majority can be wrong I HAVE TO AGREE TO THAT. IT IS IN THE SAME PRINCIPLE AS LEADERSHIP, EITHER RIGHT OR WRONG LEAD.. AND BESIDES - ACCORDING TO COMMON OPPINION - -ALL THE PROPHETS OF GOD IS EXTREMISTS AND PSYCOPHATS-!!!. LAFTER !!!. Orao.
4. Note to Yoel Meltzer- YB isn't against a 2-state solution!
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (02.25.09)
Neither is Likud, neither is Shas. None of the major players among the so-called "extremist" parties that will most likely make up the governing coalition are against a 2-state solution! Like I've mentioned before, though, if the Israeli Left started "engaging in real discussions based upon actual ideas and approaches, rather than mere sound bites and cliches such as 'extremist'', the Israeli Left would cease to exist because it would be the Israeli Right. Just a note, though, in a world where 2+2=5, saying that 2+2=4 would render you an "extremist"...
5. An excellent analysis (End)
David   (02.25.09)
6. you are right, also Churchill was an extremist...
uli ,   jerusalem   (02.25.09)
and his extreme thoughts of war with germany saved britian and the world from that nazi monsters.
7. Common sense.
David ,   USA, exile   (02.25.09)
Excuse me for asking, but, Isn't it just a little extremist to have a charter of complete destruction of Yisra'el? A charter calling for the death of every Jew on Planet Earth? Isn't that just a little extremist? Another question, Don't you think that this may call for extreme measures to make sure this doesn't happen? First let them change their charter and recognize Yisra,el right to exist then maybe measures could be a little less extreme when dealing with these enemies that Kadima wants to give half of Yisra'el. In my humble opinion, you can not go to far right nor can you get two extreme when people are trying to destroy you.
8. Why the hell always people from exact sciences...
John ,   Europe   (02.25.09)
... like computer science, biology, and even finance, ALWAYS have something to say about human sciences (like politics). Get a grip - in exact sciences, 1+1 is always 2, and in human sciences, 1+1 can equal 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, can equal nothing etc. So, mr. Meltzer COULD know that many political parties actually show their political agendas JUST FOR THE REFERENCE, or abstract goals, BUT that reality dictates politics. Hence, Sharon could want to kill every last Palestinians within his mind - but the politics dictated something else! Also, mr. Meltzer would do good to check his quotations - Jabotinsky's statement was said in context of ASSIMILATION, not in context of physical destruction (hence, Jabotinsky didn't predict Shoa).
9. #7 David, You Make A Big Assumption
Noach ,   FL   (02.26.09)
You are making the assumption that the Hamas expresses an idea that is not in the "norm" in ME society. If you have forgotten, there were multiple wars of annihilation on Israel in the early days... My point is, Hamas' views on some things may be extreme, and there inability to "compromise" may be extreme today, but in the ME, the thought of destroying Israel is not extreme at all.
10. A good guideline for the politicians...
Debra ,   UK   (02.26.09)
Israel's politics is quite complex since not only relative issues are involved but also the absolute.Absolute truth equals all relative positions and in fact is a synthesis of two extremes,so a distinction is required between extremism and fundamentalism. In European media neither extremes are allowed to be heard so there can be no voice for truth. Yet truth is the foundation of Judaism and the reason for Israel's troubles is that truth is not being given recognition.
11. #8 John, it's because to a large extent, human sciences
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (02.26.09)
are not sciences at all. The very definition of "science" demands some kind of accuracy in the equation. And to a large extent, the Humanities are about debating what humanity *should* be, based on the definition of the academia, rather than what humanity actually is and how we should handle that. Also, Jabotinsky's statements were made not in just in the context of assimilation, but in the context of historic context of two millenniums of constant pogroms and massacres, ones in which the Jews found themselves being on the brink of destruction time and time again. The 1930s saw the rise of Adolf Hitler, and extreme nationalism in several parts of Europe. Racial Theory was taught like science, and anti-Semitism was the norm. It was a boiling pot. And Jabotinsky was wise enough to see what would happen when it blows up.
12. FASCISTS!!!
Edan ,   Tel Aviv   (02.26.09)
The slogan "citizenship based on loyalty" wreaks of Nazism, fascism and totalitarianism. Lieberman is nothing but a racist thug. Yisrael Beitenu is the modern day "Kach". The russian immigrants are used to authoritarian leaders and that is what he gives them.
13. #11, and they also are kinda keen on facts
Danny   (02.26.09)
they being people from "hard sciences". For instance, this comment that Sharon wanted to kill "every palestinian" is clearly false.
14. To #12, Edan
Greg ,   San Diego Usa   (02.26.09)
I hope, as a jew You know a word or two in Yiddish. And that means You are "nit kein greiser hohem un nit kein kleiner shmock" ! The Arets Israel was built by halutsim from all aruound Europe, a big part of them were from Russia!!!! So in Russian it would sound "ne plui v kolodets". Translate it for him someone, please...
15. Edan on "Fascism"
Steven Karmi ,   Pisa, Italy   (02.26.09)
It sounds like Edan might have "racist" attitudes about Russin immigrants. So, how much do you like throwing around epithets which take social science terms and render them meaningless by misuse and overuse? How about this one?: Tel Aviv-ians are debauched sensualists, and they consider anyone who promotes authority or power in any form to be a "fascist". Now, what does 'ciitzen' and 'nation' really mean...to you?
16. !!!
Mohammad ,   Jordan   (02.26.09)
I could not stop myself from laughing after reading this article. According to the author shallow analysis, Adolf Hitler was not an extremist, nor Osama Bin Laden!! According to your "analysis", all criminal through human history are sweet and lovely moderates! please respect your readers minds!!!
17. The terrorists who stole Gush Katif were Jewish extreemists.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (02.26.09)
18. #12, Edan, Clearly Doesn't Understand Nazis...
Noach ,   FL   (02.26.09)
How is no citizenship without loyalty anywhere resemble Nazism? Nazis said "no citizenship unless you are aryan." It didn't matter how loyal you were. My great grandfather was awarded the Iron Cross in WWI, but because he was Jewish, the Nazis seized everything he owned. He fled with this daughter and wife, but the family that stayed were murdered. Edan, learn some history and put things in real perspective. Also, look up the definition of citizen: One who seeks the destruction of the state should not benefit from the state.
19. racist Edan #12
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (02.26.09)
Lieberman, just like Beilin, Peres and Livni, believes in "two countries for two nations". To implement their dream, Beilin, Peres and Livni want a violent ethnic cleansing of Jews. In contrast, Lieberman wants to peacefully draw borders selected by the people themselves, so that each person lives in the country he wants. How dare you call Lieberman a racist.
20.  To #12, Edan
Ben-Yehudah ,   K'far Tapu'ah   (02.26.09)
B"H Great article Yoel. Edan, the only fascists in Israel are the "We know better," anti-Torah {read: anti Jewish} leftist Eruv Rav. However, Lieberman is also wrong. Goyim have no business being here w/o at least accepting 7 misswoth Bnei Noah or avduth wemissim {labor and taxes}. I doubt that's what will be included in his agreement for signing, which will no doubt exclude a great number of Jews, particularly those who hold Torah in higher esteem than the "almighty state." But, hey, what does Lieberman care about halachah?
21. Extremist danger
Yosi M. ,   Gilo-Jerusalem, Isra   (02.26.09)
#9 you are right, it is the norm for the middle east countries and now moreso most if not all Muslim countries to want and desire Israel's destruction. Nevertheless, in by book, that is extremist. Edan is clearly one of our ever shrinking group of left wing extremists. Look at how he insults people that want to protect and defend us from the murdering arabs. And Edan, my little pumpkin pie, Kach was right, if of course you even bother to read his full statements in context and not oportunistic left sound bites. Not wanting the arabs to kill all of us is an extreme view that all healthy humans seem to have, of course unless you are a homicide-suicide muslim wanting to get to his 70 virgils or is that sheep?
22. Danny, #13, you misunderstood...
John ,   Europe   (02.26.09)
I wrote it as "for example". As far as I know, Sharon did not want to kill every last Palestinian. :)
23. I'm an extremist.
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem Israel   (02.27.09)
I EXTREMELY want to LIVE in peace and quiet with out the worry of being attacked just for believing in one GOD and living in my own country. I also EXTREMELY believe in law and order and justice for all, be it one person or 1 million people/ terrorists. You act like criminals then you should be treated as such. I EXTREMELY don't think I should have to compromise on any of those beliefs at all. I think that I'm being EXTREMELY reasonable.
24. You guys are hilarious!!
Edan ,   Tel Aviv   (02.27.09)
Although its also kind of sad.... Now that Lieberman has achieved political success he realizes that he will have to "soften up" his message. Still, this is the guy who supported the "transfer" idea from day one. The declaration of independence of the state speaks of an outstretched hand to our arab neighbors and to those living in what was partitioned to the jews by the UN. Lieberman turns that into an outstretched middle finger. And yes I have read most of the work of Prof. Benny Morris on what really happened in 1948 so I think I probably know a little more about it than y'all...Shabbat Shalom!
25. To #24, Edan
Ben-Yehudah ,   K'far Tapu'ah   (03.02.09)
Edan, for the record, you and I might actually see eye to eye on Lieberman. The press will have a field day with him. Hopefully, those at Arutz 7 won't hold back either. The only sad thing is the self-hatred and assimilation into Western societal norms of certain "Jews." EsserAgaroth.blogspot.com
