1) his "ordination" was done without the consent of the vatican, so why is the vatican even considering "his return to episcopal functions"? he was never legitimately a bishop, excommunicated or otherwise. logically, it would seem that he needs the church more than the church needs him, so what's really going on? 2) it is clear that his "apology" is not a recantation of his holocaust denial. in fact, it is anything but. 3) it is doubtful that germany really wants to prosecute him, but a warrant for his arrest would bar him from entering the eu, and possibly prevent further mischief. good. unfortunately, britain has yet to show any such inclination toward moral conviction 4) jewish groups using words like "penance" sound strange and foolish. it is sufficient to call him what he is, a fool and a nazi apologist, and ask the vatican to demonstrate their good faith by distancing themselves from his opinions.

even though this man has opended societies pandoras box of bitterness that is virtualy impossible to close...whether it is him honestly owning up to his mistake....and/or those holding thier cup of bitterness poision and learning how to turn it into constructive forgivness..... we as a society will not be served well if we refuse to come to grips with our own evil....whether it be bishop williamsons denial or those that hold him to a standard that they would not accept even if he honestly met all the requirements of that standard....
