1. Excellent
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (03.16.09)
Excellent. Lieberman will help to bring this country into the 21st Century.
2. Sounds Scary!!!
Shua ,   NY   (03.16.09)
"The deal guarantees that legislation regulating marriage between Jews and non-Jews will be passed within two months" Does that mean intermarriage is finally hitting Israel???
3. #2 - I believe the Ynet wording to be incorrect.
redbourn ,   tel aviv   (03.16.09)
The sides agreed that legislation on civil marriages between Israeli non-Jews would be resolved within two months. A committee would then be formed to find a solution for other couples within 15 months. And 'resolved' is a huge and intentional loophole. Mike
4. The portfolios and agreementswhich Lieberman
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (03.16.09)
has secured for Yisrael Beiteinu allows the party the opportunity to put in place its most important pledges (see website) to the people of Israel and democratize the country as well. As foreign minister, Lieberman's fiery approach (when necessitated) will be complemented by deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon's smooth (in the best sense) and professional attitude. I look forward to the forthcoming changes in Israel due to a more hardminded and committed approach than what we've experienced under Kadima.
5. If he's the next FM .....
David Thompson ,   Melbourne, Australia   (03.16.09)
Can someone show him how to wear a tie, or tell him not to wear one at all! He just looks a bit of a slob with the way he wears it! I know ties aren't usually worn in Israel, but many politicions there wear their ties the right way, so can he just do something about it!
6. #5 Gratefully an imbecile like you doesn't live in Israel!
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (03.16.09)
Oh my!How important are your demands for the very first moment of Lieberman's appointment!Oh my! Are you a sample of australian people? Are you?
7. Good progress
Steve   (03.16.09)
Lieberman as FM will be... interesting. But at least we know he can't be any worse than Livni at that job. Good to see an agreement has been worked out, and that they are going to sort out the marriage issue.
8. ? Lieberman in a jodipuri?
Ypip ,   Canada   (03.16.09)
nnnyyyy.....
9. incredible
cfs ,   fr and dz   (03.16.09)
this man will represent Israel in the world and for me he is a danger. Why always bad man win ? its because people are hopeless and vote for extremists ?
10. Last Person to Leave Israel....
Jonathan Cohen ,   Ramat Gan   (03.16.09)
This is scary stuff. I along with many dozens of educated others I know will soon be leaving this excuse for a democracy. In any normal country the party with the largerst amount of mandates forms the government. That basic concept doesn't seem to have caught on here yet. Last person to leave Israel please turn out the light.
11. Appearance Does Count
leo ,   nyc   (03.16.09)
Lieberman is already viewed as an extremist and improving his appearance is very important to softening his image. His shirt neck size is too small to wear a tie and he looks disheveled. If he is going to be the foreign minister he has to dress the part--or give the job to Silvan Shalom! Those who think this is unimportant have absolutely no understanding of how important looking well dressed and speaking good English is for an Israeli public figure on the world stage.
12. (#10) Jonathan Cohen from Ramat Gan,
Robert Haymond ,   Ashdod, Israel   (03.16.09)
typical talk from the "educated" elite of Tel Aviv and surrounding area. I, too, am formally educated if a PhD counts for anything. And the Russian population of Israel who back up Lieberman, do they not represent the new professional and educated class in this country? So Jonathan, who do you represent? I know -- those effete Israelis who escape military service through the connivance of psychologists and psychiatrists. So don't threaten us because outside of Tel Aviv we don't really appreciate you anyway.
13. Brucha u Kol HaKovod!! NOW.....
Gideon Reader   (03.16.09)
...go foward LEAD and PROTECT the nation and the people. It will make a refreshing change.
14. Better lives for Russian Jews ahead.
winston ,   London, U.K.   (03.16.09)
Many immigrants from the FSU have not been treated well by fellow countrymen after arriving in Israel. They were thought not to be Jewish enough because many entered Israel under the Law of Return by claiming their father is Jewish. They also brought along children and their spouses who have little or no affiliation at all to any Jewishness. As a result, many of these former FSU immigrants were being ' discriminated ' . Now with Lieberman's party holding important government portfolios, there will be changes in the lives of former FSU immigrants - for the better.
15. #10: good riddance to self-important
svietka from shomron   (03.16.09)
rubbish. U wana leave-leave-dont talk! there r plenty of us-true zionists, who r not turning off the lights. U belong in galut with yo mentality-we belong here-building and bettering the place.
16. #9 #10
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.16.09)
#9 Lieberman is a good man. Livni was a failure who even failed to "sell" Israel's defensive war against the apartheid Hamas. #10 I hear that Nobel Prize winner Auman isn't leaving. I guess he is less educated than you. Bon Voyage and don't come back.
17. to #14
ghostq   (03.16.09)
that's cause many of them didn't came to Israel from zionist reasones but from economic reasones only.
18. To: No. 10
Sarah ,   New York City, USA   (03.16.09)
Good riddance! Don't let the door hit you in your @$$ on the way out. Israel has no need of "Jews" like you. And -- for the record -- please don't try to imply that all well-educated people and intellectuals take the same point of view as you do. That is incorrect, and you know it well. I know plenty of Israelis in the academic community, the legal community and the business community who are extremely conservative. Perhaps you'll be happier elsewhere.
19. #10 I am returning to Israel because the right won.
on the way home   (03.16.09)
As a professional (with money) educated and long time US/Israeli citizen I am disgusted by the left, liberal America, Nobama & co. On the other hand fully intend to support in every way any right wing in Israel and look forward to finally being back home in a country led by the right. No more Rabin even Sharon and other left wing traitors and suck ups to the US. Go Bibi/Lieberman! To all you liberals out there in Israel, US and the rest of the world: go to hell.
20. To #5: Yeh, well I think I saw Oz PM Rudd without a tie!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (03.16.09)
Isn't that terrible? If "wearing a tie" is the most important thing facing Israel, well this would be Utopia! Actually, on most "formal" occasions Lieberman is one of the better dressed politicians unlike MK Uri Ariel who gives a new meaning to the Yiddish word "shlumpa"! You might have noticed that Speaker of the Knesset designate is going to rescind the Dress Code rule of "no jeans in the Knesset"! Now that is stupid. There should be a little respect for the institution if not for the members.
21. To #1 Yehudi: Yes, unless he has sold out to Shas!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (03.16.09)
Let us wait and see who is going to win. My money is another failed government which will betray all the promises made to the electorate about reforms, civil marriage and so on.
22. Good for Israel
David Rosenberg ,   New York, USA   (03.16.09)
That Lieberman will be FM. Out of all of Israel's politicians, Liberman is the only one who is realistic. He is willing to confront the dangers of Islamic terrorists both in the terretories and within the "green line" with innovative solutions. He is willing to call out traitors and punish them both Jewish and Arab. On the diplomatic front, Lieberman, being of Russian origin, would be better suited to form alliances between Israel and Russia to stop Iran's nuclear drive and move Russia away from the Arab sphere of influence. In this day and age when America has a weak administration, Israel needs leaders like Lieberman who come up with unconventional solutions to pressing issues.
23. Last Person to Leave Israel.....
Jonathan Cohen ,   Ramat Gan   (03.16.09)
If you leave aside for a moment all the usual hate mongering from the extremists on the forum which I don't intend to reply to , no one is actually disputing that Kadima is the largest party? If the party that won the election doesn't form the government, then what sort of democracy is that? Quite bizarre really. Last person, turn off the light.
24. Israel just lost the PR war.
Sammy from Jordan ,   Sammy   (03.16.09)
Having Lieberman as foreign minister is the biggest public relation catastrophe for Israel. Lieberman image is very bad and he is considered an extremist and fascist by majority of people in the worl. This is biggest good news for the Arab world. Lieberman is the Jewish Bin Laden. What a screw up !!!!
25. #9 - seems like you know nothing about Lieberman
redbourn ,   tel aviv   (03.16.09)
Lieberman is without doubt the brightest person in the Knesset. And read the following and hopefully relax. http://tiny.cc/noracist http://tiny.cc/notfascist Mike
26. @ no. 24 Sammy
AJ ,   Raalte   (03.16.09)
Then he should feel right at home among all the extremist and fascist representatives of all Arab and other Muslim and the remaining communist/socalist regimes. Salamat.
27. Some political education
BlackEye ,   Germany   (03.23.09)
Maybe you should remind yourself of the difference betwen absolute and relative majorities. The fact that no party has gained the majority of the seats in knesset is the reason while they are building a coalition at all.
