1. Unfair practices
Realistic ,   Israel   (03.18.09)
Unfair practices, like claiming all the rights and benefits of citizenship with none of the service required by all other citizens? These workers are right, it is time to end these racist practices and not employ those who oppose mandatory service based on their race. Tibi is just looking for another chance for incitement.
2. All security guards in Israel should be
jason white ,   afula,israel   (03.18.09)
I.D.F. veterans.Irregardless of their religion. I work with three other guards,Jewish and none served in the I.D.F. One was never even in a foreign army. Our foreman never served in the I.D.F and he is Jewish. He replaced a moslim who retired, but he and all his family members served and are serving in the army. This is not racist,it is sensible to require security guards to be vets. Also veterans deserve more, because we contributed to the state more than others!
3. racist?
adam ,   uk   (03.18.09)
Druze etc and those that are loyal citizens are clearly not exempted. The policy of having served in the army already covers numerous jobs. The problem is to know whether those arab-israelis today want to harm the state or are loyal citizens, I suspect the former. This is about prevention not about about clearing up after an incident! Although it could have been handled better from a PR perspective as that's all that counts nowadays!! Its a sad situation but necessary - interested to know whether there are arab-israeli safety inspectors at the airport manning the entrance, the security checkpoints and the aircraft?
4. This is not racism:You have an option!
Arie ,   BaGolan   (03.18.09)
The ruling can easily be amended to read "Only those that engage in National Service." But tibi, his ilk, and the 5th column continue to demand our demise while at the same time demanding we support them. YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! By the way, read the rule: "ONLY FORMER SOLDIERS!" This excludes Haredim, "religious' women, and so on - all JEWS! It allows Druze to gain the positions! So this is not an "exclude arabs" clause. You can, however, quickly resolve this: engage in National Service; take an oath of loyalty. Then there is no problem. But every time tibi and his ilk open their mouths, they admit their treasonous intents. I sincerely hope this continues. Our soldiers deserve the best after they serve to protect us
5. What's the issue?
Christopher ,   Boston, MASS   (03.18.09)
In the United States, veterans receive preferential treatment in every aspect of U.S. Federal employment. They receive preferential treatment in State and local governments as well. Every security force in the U.S., whether on a federal level down to State and local police, put the veterans to the head of the line when hiring. There is no racism. It is simply proper that a nation do all it can to reward those that have put their lives on the line for the safety and security of their fellow citizens. We would have it no other way, and neither should Israel. But as usual, Israel is not allowed to hold to the same standards as others. Perhaps instead of complaining about this issue, the Israeli Arabs need look at who they have been electing to the Knesset and why those representative are more concerned about satisfying the demands of the PA and Hamas, then their elective constituents.
6. Who is the racist?
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.18.09)
It seems that the racists are actually Salame, al-Karim and Tibi who are saying that Arabs do not serve in the army. Israeli Arabs do serve in the army, and they can get a job with the train authorities. The Arabs and Jews who choose not to join the army should find a different job,
7. Oh....Funny!
Shimon ,   Cincinnati, USA   (03.18.09)
And we sould start letting the foxes guard the chicken coops? While I don't hold with "Profiling", I certainly would feel safer knowing a brother in arms was watching out for me. Also, soldiers and those who have served in dangerous situations while protecting Israel SHOULD get first shot at jobs: Every job. It's the way a normal society shows it's debt to those who served, and encourages others to do so. If Arab Israelis wish to have equal opportunities, adopt attitudes and do things which will encourage Israelis to trust you.
8. simple solution
Jacob Erickson ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (03.18.09)
the simple solution is for them to start proving that they are trustworthy and dedicated to the state of Israel. I would say a good first step is to start volunteering for national service, I doubt the army will accept them for some time, but I'm sure places like MDA might. Prove your trust before you get trusted.
9. Not racist
Aaron ,   SF, USA   (03.18.09)
I quote from #4 in agreement: "ONLY FORMER SOLDIERS!" This excludes Haredim, "religious' women, and so on - all JEWS! It allows Druze to gain the positions! So this is not an "exclude arabs" clause. You can, however, quickly resolve this: engage in National Service; take an oath of loyalty.
10. A Required Policy
True ,   Israel   (03.18.09)
Tibi, you scum, the only thing illegal, racist, and discriminatory is your peoples murder of Bnei Yisrael, the TRUE inheritors of Eretz Yisrael. Nobody is afraid of the Bnei Yisrael when they get on a train. Moslems are the perpetrators of 95+% of the terrorism in the world. Stop crying and instead behave according to the seven Noahide Laws like you have to. עם ישראל חי
11. Jews who don't serve are barred - Arabs who do serve are not
L. Rose ,   L.A. USA   (03.18.09)
It's hardly racism when it applies across the board to any Israeli including Jews, Muslim, Druze, Bedouin, etc. Army service sounds like great training for the job and a built in natural extension. Given the Jews' history of military service within the countries they have been citizens of - it also begs the question - why aren't more Arab-Israeli citizens, who benefit from living in a more open, democratic country than the Arab neighbors (and actually have more human rights - particularly women) - aren't more accountable to defend Israel? It seems the 'preferential treatment' actually works in their favor if it's not as mandatory for them as for other Israeli citizens. Which would you rather do - risk your life to serve Israel and have more opportunities open to you after military service? Or complain when veterans who did risk their lives get those opportunities?
12. I agree, it is racist not to serve in the IDF
Yoni   (03.18.09)
The law of logical consequences repays in kind. I think the arabs are mistaking realism for racism. If you want the benifits of society you must serve the society
13. ....and that type of enemy would guard the Jews and Israel?
Tibi ie a traitor ,   USA   (03.18.09)
14. Good policy. Screw the enemies! Protect Israel
Protect ,   USA   (03.18.09)
15. It's a non starter--read the last paragraph first
sara moss   (03.18.09)
This is just a tricked up story. The real story is it was an attempt to deny positions to Arabs but as it clearly says, a letter was sent and pressure applied and now the Railway has set aside jobs for Arabs. SO, the real story is that after being pressured the Railways retreated a bit. Nice flaming, Ynet.
16. Want State Benefits? Serve the State!
Raz ,   Rishloch   (03.18.09)
17. Absolutely NOT racism!
Maurice ,   Montreal, Canada   (03.18.09)
#4 and #7 make all the right points. Nothing else to add.
18. NUMERUS CLAUSUS
John Kovacs ,   Europe   (03.18.09)
19. Arabs are welcome to serve in the IDF or Police, and many do
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (03.18.09)
Those who don't wish to serve and by so doing share the responsibility of all citizens in Israel should not ask to also benefit from all the rights afforded.
20. Re Adam #3
Jess ,   Los Angeles   (03.18.09)
Last time I flew out of Ben Gurion, I was interviewed by a very nice Arab guy working in the security question line.
21. you have to earn trust & arabs havnt show it in the past
zionist forever   (03.18.09)
Ex IDF soilders have been trained in both security work and handling weapons. This is the Railway we are talking about not a cheap restraunt that has an unarmed idiot sitting outside with a metal detector. A terror attack on the railway would be a dream attack for any terrorist and we would be not only be giving these arabs security clearance but we would be giving them a gun. The arabs who carry out bulldozer attacks were not members of terrorist groups but they decided to carry out an attack anyway. Having Israeli citizenship doesn't make an arab wont carry out a terror attack. Trust is something you earn not given as a gift and the arab population has never shown trust. I would certainly not be happy using the railway if the security was provided by an armed arab If they want security gaurds let them act as unarmed gaurds outside arab owned businesses.
22. This is solid good sense!
The 11th Man ,   London.   (03.18.09)
23. Preferences for veterans are entirely legitimate.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (03.18.09)
Christopher is right. When I was trying for a civil service position years ago, I competed against veterans who were given a 5 point advantage, and disabled veterans who were given a 10 point advantage. I didn't begrudge them. It just meant I had to be that much smarter to get the job. (I did.) The proposed changes obviously could have been handled better. Existing employees could, for example, have been "grandfathered" in. But safety and security inspectors must be trustworthy. And I, for one, would rather put my trust in someone who's served his country.
24. 43 years old
mark ,   israel   (03.18.09)
can i have a job please no idf service but jewish and israelie thanks
25. During my military career in served with many Arabs
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (03.18.09)
Some were my commanders, others I commanded. Some were outstanding, others less so. All proud to do their duty. On the whole any veteran will do, regardless of race or religion. MK Ahmad Tibi is the racist here
26. There are still Arabs in Israel?
Doron ,   Israel   (03.18.09)
27. An Unimportant Fact...
EGGM ,   Petah Tikva, Israel   (03.18.09)
I like how Ynet hid this quote for last: "In a statement, the train company said would also set aside guarding positions for Israeli Arabs who had not necessarily performed army service." Apparently Ynet and the Arabs are in on it again. Clearly the policy is not racist and IR has reserved some places specifically for non-veterans.
28. Look who's talking!!
Shmuel L. ,   Petach Tikvah   (03.18.09)
Ahmad Tibi!! Who cares about his opinion? He is allowed to sit in the Knesset even though he is an enemy of the State of Israel. If the Arab citizens of Israel were loyal to the State, they could have any job they want, but they are not - they are traitors. They should move to all the 22 Arab countries. There anyone who opposes the government gets the death sentence. Here we Jews are "friers", and just plain stupid.
29. railroad employees
eva katz ,   Zichron   (03.18.09)
the very title is misleading- the article refers to 'Israeli Arabs' and not "arabs' since Israeli Arabs are not conscripted to army this restriction is simplyu racist!
30. This would be comical if it weren't so unbelievable!!!
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (03.18.09)
