3. To number 1 - Avraham, NYC
Steve ,   London, England   (03.24.09)
Are you really so stupid equalling the Nazi Germans with the Poles or you are just trying to spark another vicious debate here? Just wondering...
4. to the idiots #2 & #3
ghostq   (03.24.09)
the pols killed many jews even before WW2 and during WW2, Kishinev pogroms is the most famous one but there was also others, the pols r one of the biggest ani-semetics in europ still, the right wing party got most of the vots 4 years ago, and wasn't elected due to the curent economic situation so get real.
5. what the poles did
m ,   london   (03.24.09)
no 2 and 3 you need to read your history the Poles were responsible for murdering many Jews , people they had lived with went to school with and grew up with . This happened to my family they were murdered by the Poles not the Nazis!

7. I think that #1 means "Polish Collaborators"...
The Doc ,   Haifa, Israel   (03.24.09)
... and they were quite many - too many even by Nazi-occupied Europe "standards". No need to hide the facts but no need to demonize an entire nation either - we know EXACTLY how that feels!
8. thanks konrad
ghostq   (03.24.09)
that was helpfull considering poland was in thos years under a russian occupation, well I am not that informed but r the twins still in the gov???

Konrad ,   Warsaw   (03.24.09)
<<.. and they were quite many - too many even by Nazi-occupied Europe "standards". >> How many? What is meant by "quite"? What were the German-occupied "standards" of collaboration? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Avoid_weasel_words

April ,   Melbourne   (03.24.09)
How many? Would be interesting to know. Facts, sources, numbers. What I know is that half a milion Poles according to www.zyciezazycie.pl project were involved in helping Jews. Is 95 thousands of Jews handed over to Germans by the official French Vichy government comparable with a few Polish traitors hunted down by Polish Home Army? Mayby you mixed up Poland with another country like that block earlier found Kishinev in Poland. Historical education about Holocaust in Israel has to make plenty of catchups after years of propaganda.
11. April???
gsea   (03.24.09)
You know the Israely education system how??? you r from ozzland??? And how do you explain the size of the jewish comunity in poland today, very small and very forgoten, and about a month ago they have founf a mass grave of entier families in west poland not far away from the german border of germans, how do you explain that?
12. # 8
Konrad ,   Warsaw   (03.24.09)
<> No, considering nothing. Historically Kishiniev was never a part of the Polish Commonwealth. <> Agreed. You are not. But prone to making sweeping generalizations about Poland, without any regard to facts.
13. konrad
ghostq   (03.24.09)
don't bite my head off, and you wrong there r many (notice I said many not all) ani-semetic in poland today, trust me I know.

April ,   Melbourne   (03.24.09)
Gsea, I judge by what I can read here. Your questions only confirm that (appologies, do not what to sound malicious). Answers to your questions are simple: In 1939 Germany invaded Poland and started extermination of Jews and Poles. 3 milion Jews and the same number of Poles were killed during the war. A mass grave near German border is not surprising as executions were the way of killing civilians by Germans. I do not know why you asked that question and what you meant. As almost the entire Jewish community perished during the war, not many Jews remained in Poland. Survivors emigrated to Western Europe, USA, Israel, Australia etc choosing free world instead of communist paradise. Those who decided to stay, many of them communists themselves have been kicked out by their communists mates in 1968 as a result of power struggle within the communist regime. Many Jews or Poles with Jewish origins that had nothing to do with that were forced out of the country too. They became victims of the "war" within the communist party. That are the reasons why Jewish community in Poland is so small, in brief.
15. april you partly right
gsea   (03.24.09)
but you don't have the entier history of polish jews, the pogroms were way befor WW2, there was a jewish zionist journalist name Hayyim Nahman Bialik: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayyim_Nahman_Bialik check out his literary career who saw with his own eyes and wrote a famous poem on that, also documented that, the pols have killed many jews, and germans that was the point I was making with the quetion, pols have killed german as well: http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,603131,00.html

Reaction on this article are surprising... everytime when there is an article about Poland... let's say even about Polish cinema or culture, or like here, about a very nice initiative of finding old footages of jewish life in pre-war Poland... the comment's are starting about a Polish JEW-hatred.... it's like some kind of Pawlow instinct. You people really can't read anymore??? maybe read this article once again and keep your anti-polonism to yourself will you? Of course there was antisemitism in pre-war poland. There were 10 pct Jews in Poland of which most part was not integrated in the society. But this has nothing to do with Hollocaust. Nothing what so ever! This is fact just like the fact that Israel is the last colonial country on the earth refusing Arabs the right of return and depriving Arabs living there from their citizens rights. Just like the fact that modern Israel and unifying Hebrew culture effectivelly wiped out whole Yidish culture!!! Next time you're read a story about some people trying to restore Jewish traditions or picture old times, just be happy there are still such people. Next time you're read the story about righteous among the nation, don't start this endless discution again and again... Just read it like it is. Toda ve lechitraot!
17. #16 haaa???
ghostq   (03.24.09)
this article about jews not arabs, where do you come up with such load of baloney.
18. Poles killed hundreds of surviving Jews after the war
Avraham ,   NYC   (03.24.09)
When Jews came to claim their homes and property, many Poles look at them totally flaggerbasted. "The Germans did not kill you too?"
19. there were tons of progoms done WAYYY before nazis
birdy   (03.24.09)
all over poland and ukrane, russia, byelorussia, etc. TONS OF PROGROMS !!! now what does that mean people? you think the poles loved the jews? i dontthink so
20. Tons of pogroms
Konrad ,   Warsaw   (03.24.09)
Meaning - how many? Be more precise, Birdy. It would serve your case much better. You may not be aware of that, but the phrase "tons of pogroms" makes you sound like a village fool.
21. Oh, for...!
Radka ,   Athens, Greece   (03.24.09)
So the Poles were anti-Semites, eh? I. e. they hated their Jewish neighbours? Whereas they were all lovey-dovey with all their OTHER neighbours, right? You might want to tell that to the thousands of German civilians murdered by Polish mobs in September 1939. You might want to tell that to the 2 million Poles murdered by the Germans during the occupation (200,000 during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising alone). You might want to tell that to the nearly 1 million Poles murdered by Ukranian nationalists. You might want to tell to the thousands of Ukrainians murdered by Polish nationalists... and the Poland-Lithuania story is not exactly moonlight and roses either. And you might also check what happened to all other minorities after the war. You're missing the forest for the trees here, people. You focus exclusively on what the Central/Eastern European peoples did to you...but you refuse to see what those same people were doing TO EACH OTHER.

1. Poems and literary works are not a recognized reference for determining historical facts. 2. At this point it is not known who killed Germans in Malbork, nor the article you provided claims that it were Poles 3. Malbork is neither in Western Poland nor close to the German border 4. The party PiS was never considered anti-Semitic, and one of the twins - president Kaczynski, did a lot of gestures towards the Jewish community (giving away land in Warsaw for the Jewish museum, visiting a synagogue and wearing a yarmulka, meeting with Poland's chief rabbi after the latter was attacked by an anti-Semite, etc.) I've seen articles in Jewish media that were very enthusiastic about him. I don't feel like digging the URLs, but I've seen them. 5. "Trust me I know" is not the greatest argument when every time you attempt to discuss something more specific you are way off.

"You might want to tell that to the nearly 1 million Poles murdered by Ukranian nationalists. " The numbers I've seen were closer to 100,000...and I'm not sure about the "thousands of German civilians" either. If you're referring to Bydgoszcz, then even German historians speak about hundreds and the circumstances are very hazy. Though I agree with you that Jews often forget that violence was multi-directional in those times.

It's quite ironic that the person who calls other "idiots" begins his/her tirade by, completely out of the blue, attributing to Poles a quite famous pogrom perpetrated in a city located hundreds of kilometers beyond the borders of Poland and which has nothing to do with Poland or Poles whatsoever . What is even more sad, is that this post gets a "recommended" status. Either the supporters did not see the bizarre error, or they believe that as long as the conclusion is "right", arguments can be all wrong.

ROMAN ,   USA   (03.25.09)
Does it really matter if there were tons or tens or ONE POGROM ? Killing of one person because they are of a different religion or race is a crime against humanity ! Mocking phrases others write makes you look not " like a village fool" but a genuine hard core bigot. You are not posting here to create any good will...I wonder what your motives are...and don't tell me you are defending Poland here I've seen your ranting and raving on this talkback forum many times before and it is always the same tone: we Poles are beyond guilt and we never did anything to our jewish brothers but gave them love and taught our children to respect all people . Get real man...your government is trying very hard make amends and show that Poland belongs to the free world and that it does but bigots like yourself need to go...
27. #21 Radka
adam ,   ny usa   (03.25.09)
Strange train of thought Radka. Does the fact that the "same people" were killing each other absolve what the Polish antisemites did to the jewish people ??? Or are you saying that the Poles who are guilty of antisemitic acts are thus excused because others did terrible things to each other all around Europe ! Geography my darling is just incidental and who "refuses to see" what you are talking about ? Or are you just mad that the Polish antisemites take the first prize of all and are recognized as such by the majority of civilized world. Are you lovey-dovey with all your neighbors...I think not.
28. Konrad / 20
Gil ,   Tel Aviv   (03.25.09)
Its pretty obvious to anyone reading the facts that those countries invaded by the Nazis whose govt. and population hated Jews helped round them up and many Jews died; France, Poland, Holland are amongst those countries who did that. And then those countries whose govts and people did not hate Jews but were occupied by Nazis; Persia, Denmark are two countries that come to mind, did not co-operate, did not round up Jews and hardly any died. Konrad, seems you're just feeling guilty and in denial to me. Makes you look even worse. At least Germans are remorseful and brave enough to apologise / be honest about it.... Shame on you. Shame on Poland.
29. Loved it! Beautiful footage
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (03.25.09)
Agree 100% with you Doc, Good point Radka. Poland is a country like any other with good and bad people. Look what was going on here during the war http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armia_Krajowa It was a free for all... Anyway, before any of you TBers post something nasty about Poland...bear in mind the descendants of the 3 million Poles that were also murdered by the Nazis ....What makes their story so different from ours?
30. Konrad #20 - Tons of pogroms.
Tahl ,   Ashdod, Israel   (03.25.09)
Here is a list of pogroms from Sept 44 to Sept 1946 against Jews in Poland, as given by Charles on 10.3 (source, Yad Vashem): Bialystok 1 pogrom , 3 deaths ; Kielce 10 p. , 104 deaths ; Krakow 7 p , 46 deats , Lublin 11 p , 66 d. ; Lodz 7p. 28 d. Rzeszow 2 p. 23 d. ; Warsaw 6. 27 d. others 9 p 30 deaths. And those are only for that brief 2-year period. Here are your FACTS. And the expression, "tons of pogroms", while being shabby grammatically - is still practically correct in this case.
