3. Rabbis, not women, are HALACHIC authorities
Anonymous ,   U.S.A.   (03.26.09)
I personally have a Rav whom I see as most sensitive and approachable no matter what the issue. Rabbis learn and teach Torah. A person is obligated to "make for him/herself a rav" - this may require a person to search outside of his city, if necessary. I have no problem if women want to counsel other women in various "women's issues", but to call these advisors "halachic" authorities, I think is undermining our mesorah (tradition) of men having the obligation to study Torah and to serve the Jewish people (men and women alike) as our rabbis. My question is "are our yeshivos developing the kind of rabbis who are sensitive and approachable, and not only knowledgeable?"

Thank G-D I communicate with my husband, who then approaches a reliable halachic authority

This hotline has existed for at least 8 years. I think it's great. Too bad some men are threatened by knowledgeable women.
