1. Egypt.
The world ,   Everybody.   (04.04.09)
They are not our friends.
3. yeah, ironic point taken, but it's still hypothetical
Central Scrutinizer   (04.04.09)
As it didn't get that far (G-D bless IAF)
4. #2 Hypothetical? Pigs may fly.
Cia Mossad ,   Head Scrutinizer   (04.04.09)
OK, well how WERE they going to get them into Israel?
5. I know a waiter that makes more money
Ypip ,   Canada   (04.04.09)
than an Egyptian border gaurd.
6. Mystery in Sudan
John Mckay ,   Toronto, Canada   (04.04.09)
Or, it could be that Egypt knows of the convoy and accepts the plan of the originators and intermediaries, not wanting to alienate the Arab world, but tips Israel of the scheme and moreover allows the IAF to use its airspace to reach target. This hypothesis would also be fly, given the state of relations between all the protagonists involved. Either way, kudos to the IAF.
7. Why?
Lior ,   Israel   (04.04.09)
Because George Bush made a point of calling Egypt a "good friend of the U.S. and ALLY IN THE WAR ON TERROR. " (at the very height of the intifada when thousands of weapons tunnels were being dug from Egypt to Gaza which brought death and terror to innocent Israelis.) We could expect this from the rest of the world who gave a damn about the war on terror but George Bush of all people? Then there is Israel who ran to Mubarak as though he were a G-d. (when Liberman simply asked why Mubarak can not come to Israel he was slammed for that being called a racist followed by high ranking Israelis running to Mubarak with apologies. ) Lies are now the new truth and truth, just plain lies.
8. A Cynical Article
JB ,   Tel Aviv   (04.04.09)
Mr Segal, The fact of the matter is that the convey did not go through Egypt. It did not pass over the border, yet by looking at the geography, fighter jets passing over the red sea would have been picked up by egyptian radar. The egyptians did not alert the sudanians nor Hamas. I agree there is a cold peace between Egypt and Israel but you can hardly say they are allies of Hamas. The glass is always half empty Mr segal isn't it.
9. hey, hagai, you are no Steven Segal
Zohan ,   Tel Aviv   (04.04.09)
What makes you think Egypt authorities are not corrupted and squeaky clean.Tell me where do all the weapons smuggled through the tunnels came from? from UFO above? As far as I am concerned, you are one biased political correspondent
10. The "people"
Brad ,   USA   (04.04.09)
The "people" only want to talk about the bombing, because talk of Egyptian conduct is the embarrassing part they want to ignore. You know, just like the rest of the truth.
11. nothing paceful about egypt. its managed war, with no bullet
ralph   (04.04.09)
bullets, yet. thats all.
12. Egypt and the convoy of arms to Gazza
Nora ,   Tel Aviv   (04.04.09)
Egypt never mises the opportunity to harm Israel indirectly. Israel never misses the opportunity to shuts its eyes as to Egyptian covert enemity. And the US? The US loves this game as it can show to the Western world an exemple of how to help a a pro-Western Egypt. If any of you , the readers, want to throw out due to the sickness of those politics, now it`s the time.
13. why Iran?
john ,   Tel-Aviv   (04.04.09)
Saudi Arabia is known for setting up and developing a new organization within the Gaza strip, see what happened in Lebanon after the summer of 2006. Rockets are fired while the Hezbollah is known for not wanting that. A part from Iran, they also want a proxy. This game played by Egypt is for benefiting SA and not Iran. The Banana curve is reoccurring. While SA is one of the countries that is truly terrified of the Persian bomb, they want to play a more important role in this region as here the battlefield ground is fully fertile, entropy.
14. talkback about weapons smuggling
noble man ,   Egypt   (04.04.09)
If USA could stop or hit back against tunnels from Mexico to its land Egypt will be able to stop or hit back against tunnels to Gaza.
15. What Egypt Couldn't Do Thru War .....
Adina Kutnicki ,   Israel,new olah   (04.04.09)
The Egyptians are waiting for two things - to amass enough military hardware from the US to attack Israel, and in the meanwhile they not so secretly collaborate with our killers. All the while they manage to play 'peace' broker with Israeli toadies propping up their efforts as important kingmakers. Once this charade ends many Jews will have paid the ultimate price with their lives. What is most galling is that Israelis prostrate and grovel before them, yet the Egyptians pay them back with either blowing them off, aiding the enemy and fomenting the most vile anti-semitism possible. Peace, NOT even close.
16. Should we trust Egypt ?
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (04.04.09)
Iranian Grad-type Katyusha rockets entered Gaza via Sudan, Egyptian Red Sea ports and over the Sinai desert before being smuggled through tunnels, the Associated Press reports. Its reporter saw an 18-inch fragment of a rocket, and many rockets and weapons bear signs of Iranian paint, lettering and serial numbers. And what are the relations between Egypt and Iran ? To know more : http://xrl.us/bmr8b
17. They are not out enemy either
GHook93 - Zionist ,   Chicago   (04.04.09)
True they are not Israel's best friend. In fact if Egypt and Israel were at a cocktail party they probably only give each other a courtesy greeting. But unlike, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, the Sudan and Libya, they are not our enemies either
18. I did not real all the comments but so far
leo ,   USA   (04.04.09)
I agree with #6 and #8. It is also surprising for me to see how author of the article oversimplifies the issue while, no doubt, knowing full well the tight rope Egypt has to dance on.
19. Its called a proxy war
Y ,   Nitzan   (04.04.09)
The large volume of weapons and explosives reaching Gaza via Egypt prooves that Egypt is SUPPLYING the arms. The arms are not being "smuggled". It's time for the Israeli govt. and media to stop whitewashing Egypt. Egypt is conducting a proxy war against Israel by supplying the weapons to Gazan Arabs in the same way Syria is conducting a proxy war against Israel by supplying Hezballah.
20. The Egyptian Arabs have never been friendly to Jews
Frank ,   USA   (04.05.09)
So, do not expect it now. It is not going to happen. Egypt hates Israel because from the Egyptian perspective the existence of the Jewish Israel, the Middle Eastern democratic, military and economic powerhouse, diminishes its standing in the region. Egypt is an economic and political failure. it is a poor country that does not produce much value. However, instead of being angry with themselves and their inability to modernize, So, instead of working hard to create value it is easier for Egypt to hate and blame the Jews. Egypt will remain a corrupt, backward entity like the rest of the Middle East and whether we like it not the ugly entities like Egypt will forever surround the modern, peaceful and sophisticated state of Israel.
21. Israel did what had to be done
Steve   (04.05.09)
The Israeli Government knows perfectly well that a large number of Egyptian officials are corrupt and will look the other way if a bribe is paid. They know that Egypt has been hopeless at combating weapons smuggling. Therefore Israel had no choice but to attack the convoy while in Sudan. Bombing a convoy in Egypt might have been problematic. However, Sudan's air force is not exactly advanced.
22. iran and lieberman
alexi   (04.05.09)
Israeli establishment brokers and arab leaders are freaking out at lieberman's direct comments which were quite truthful. Concessions of late from olmert and livni have been completely one way. Iran sensing weakness of olmert in particular along with livni and barak have repeated diatribes against israel, that it should be wiped off the map, that it is vermin, that the holocaust was untrue. It is demoralizing to israelis that these attacks go unchallenged. Mofaz and ben eliezer did reply somewhat.I don't know what the correct way is with iran.Perhaps it is better to be quiet but carry a big stick. But it isn't good for jews to be overly defensive. Since bibi took office and then with lieberman's remarks, I've checked the iranian press and so far not a word about wiping israel off the map. They are clearly nervous about bibi, lieberman, yaalon and peled. Yaalon is not barak . So, Lieberman who will get a chance to develop his skills and to understand better the dos and don'ts, and to also appreciate the druze and majority of arab citizens to israel, basically has done israel a favour. Someone had to slow down the olmert chamberlain concession policy of destroying the heart and soul of israel. Israel cannot cut deals based on arab good wishes. A security margin has always to exist. Belilin,. Livni, Olmert, Barak before, ben ami, ramon were dead wrong. It is their policies that have killed and maimed thousands of israelis since oslo. Finally, a lot of israeli politicians would not have the guts to tell the truth to the arab world and the cowards of the EU Solana and blair, the biggest of the EU and quartet.. Olmert was a pipsqueak coward and moron, Livni is not a coward but she is dimwitted and overly cautions, beilin and ben ami are ph.ds who cannot see the real world and are your classic academic appeasers and ramon is an asskissing lapdog of olmert. That livni would need ramon for her leadership proves how dimwitted she is.
23. What wll Egypt gain?
Egyptian 3569   (04.05.09)
What will the Egyptian governoment gain by suppling hamas with ARMS? Egypt is in PEACE with Israel?Cold or Hot it is peace. Answer this question and sop babelling.
24. Egypt and her double stander game,
e.m Jordan is Palse ,   s.f   (04.05.09)
For receiving $ billions aid from U.S.A Egyptian pretending have peace with State of Israel but in reality they have good relations with Iran and others terrorism State, end of peace treaty by the assassination of Mohammad Anvar Saddat, do not fell to sleep Egypt is waiting for opportunity to attack us Egypt still is our enemy.
25. # 14 the noble man
e.m Jordan is Palse ,   s.f   (04.05.09)
You are an idiot how the Egyptian can stop them from Gaza to entering in to Sinai Peninsula but the Egyptian can’t stop them to smuggling that much weapons in to Gaza, beside it was part of peace treaty that your government have made guarantee to keep secure her borders with State of Israel and will stop smuggling weapons in to Gaza.
26. Egypt's intentions not so honourable
Debra ,   UK   (04.05.09)
Having established the Arab refugees on our borders to destroy Israel, Egypt has distanced herself from them to fool Israel and the "peace" enables her to freely aid them. The move has backfired as the arms, now in the hands of Hamas, an off shoot of the Muslim brotherhood, are also directed at them. This confusion misleads Israel further.
27. warning
Jacob Erickson ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (04.05.09)
Assuming first of all, that it was the IAF that hit the convoy, I don't think it was to doubt Egypt's security. Since we have a treaty with Egypt, we couldn't have hit it after it entered Egypt, and I'm sure we wanted to send a message to Iran and those who would try to empower Gaza. So instead of waiting for Egypt to just tell them to turn around and go home, we blasted the convoy to kingdom come.
28. Egypt, Jordan,
hakim ,   usa   (04.05.09)
Lebanon, Syria, Sudan,Iran, etc etc Turning neighbors into enemies is a bad thing. Your biting more than you can chew, and it looks like everyone is getting ready to bite back!!

30. To # 29 No more biting Plz
Egyptian   (04.05.09)
Egypt got its land through war then peace. The other neighbours should get their land back (pre-1967 borders, Syria and Palestine) then there will be peace and biting food together
