1. Strongly recommended documentary on the subject "Zeitgeist"
Emet ,   Israel   (04.08.09)
You can find it on youtube or any torrent site. Make sure to see "Zeitgeit Final Edition". Then you will understand the full extent of the ritual and then some. Chag Sameach
2. Remnants of paganism is alive and well
Steve   (04.08.09)
Gotta acknowledge Mr. Sun by blessing him, lest he be angry at humankind and smite us with misfortune.
3. #2 And where, precisely, does the ritual bless the sun?
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (04.08.09)
4. #2 And where, precisely, does the ritual bless the sun?
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (04.08.09)
Because it doesn't, you see. What is relevant here is the special position, the time and place, the cycle that according to Judaism repeats every 28 years since the Creation of the World. The blessing recited is 'the maker of works of creation' - we thank the *creator*, rather than mistake the creations for something in and by themselves.
5. This is not paganism !
David ,   Toulouse, France   (04.08.09)
This is just first grade computation. A solar year is 365 days A jewish month is 28 days (moon orbit) The overall sun/moon cycle occurs then every 28*365 days, that is to say 28 years. So every 28 years, the position of the sun is the same at the same jewish date. This is not completely true indeed, as an Earth revolution is 365.25XXX solar days ...
6. 3&4 Then it is the same for Catholics
Steve   (04.08.09)
When Catholics pray to the *Creator* of Heaven and Earth with an icon of a Saint before them, is that not paganism? Unless you prefer to be hypocritical, it is no different here.
7. To #6 Why?
Barry ,   New York USA   (04.08.09)
Why is it that for every Jewish tradition people like you always look to antagonize? Get a life, hater, and learn something about your heritage!
8. #6 Oh? Did we pray to the sun, then?
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (04.08.09)
No, we just noted the fact that it was *there*, in the same spot as it was 28 years ago, and in the same spot we believe it to have been on Creation. This is called noting the miracles of our world and universe, which we often take for granted, and through that understanding both Creation and Creator. It a further act of reaffirming our faith. A bit different from praying to icons, wouldn't you say, asking for intercession and aid?
9. I second Barry about #6
Pioneer   (04.08.09)
Get a life you bummer.
10. I have been priveleged....
The 11th Man ,   London   (04.08.09)
I am a christian and have just returned from a profound service during which my jewish friends of Chabad permitted me to share in their Blessing of the Creator of the Sun. Thankyou, I shall always remember it.
11. for GOD sakes #6
Aaron ,   La, USA   (04.08.09)
you need some serious torah study. chrisianity worhsips more than one god and thus us jews consider it paganism. when we blessed the sun today we only mentioned one god! seriously you need to do some homework. if we were doing a pagan ritual that celebrated the SUN gives us light and not God, why only do it every 28 years? why not every spring eqanox. BTW the christians do this- but they call it Easter. We are celebrating one aspect of creation. shabbas is a time when we celebrate another, the day god rested from creation. the only reason we don't bless teh sun every wednesday is b/c its not in th same palce as it was in creation. IF you want to believe a religion is based on paganism go to church.
12. Appears to have stirred something deep inside steve

13. #11 You have listened to lies.
The 11th Man ,   London.   (04.08.09)
Christians worship ONE GOD. We are not pagans! I am taking time and effort to learn the riches of Judaism. I show (and am shown) respect. I am afraid that your talkback sounds like the jewish counterpart of 'Steve's' absurd offerings. Both are wrong.
14. #11, Actually, there is nothing to complain about
Jake   (04.08.09)
Recent opinions suggest that the recently anointed President Obama is more popular among Americans than Jesus.
15. blessing of the sun a talmud idea now out of date
john d.   (04.09.09)
because the rabbinic mathematicians made a mistake about their calendar and this day was supposed to have happened on the vernal equinox.obviously april 8 is no longer the vernal equinox--these days it is march 20th. not all jews are as smart as einstein ask olmert. he only knows how to count money.
16. Talmud
Muhammed ,   Jerusalem   (04.09.09)
is man made ,nothing holy about it ..Torat is a holy book .. you looked like Sun worshippers today ..similar to the native australians . you are really deviated from the sun creator ..God .
17. Blessing for the sun, not of the sun!
yeiel   (04.09.09)
This is a blessing to our Creator FOR the sun, not to the sun or of the sun. Acknowledging HaShem as the Creator. Like Roman #4 said," It repeats every 28 years." It has to do with the sun being in the exact place it was when created.
18. #16
(04.10.09)
talmud to jews is the book of our laws, conduct and way of life. torah books are our HISTORY in the land of cannan, israel, our kings, our kingdom, our holy history in israel before islam was even created....by man...a pedophile named muhammad....you islamists pray to a moon god, muhammad, who created allah.
19. how can the sun return to same place
scientific evidence ,   doesnt support idea   (04.10.09)
every 28 years since it was created when there are records in the petroglyphs showing calendars with 290 day and later +291 day years and at a later date 360 day years and now of course we have 365 1/4 day years. time has changed since humans first walked the earth. the continents we know weren't always where they are now and the earth hasn't always been tilted over from the perpendicular. where were the authors of the talmud when all these earth changes were going on ?
20. to # 18
Mohammed ,   jerusalem   (04.10.09)
by your argument we should follow the book of prophit Saleh who came even before Moses ..PBU them all . the fact the Judaism came before Islam doesn't mean anything .. the Talmud is a zionist book ..man made nothing Holy about it ..it is created to make justifications to Take TEMPORARLY our land ..
21. prophit Muhammed
Muhammed ,   Jerusalem ,palestine   (04.10.09)
if islam was Man made like # 18 stating ..Prophet Muhammad would have not mentioned the wording in the Quran about the Chosen People and the promised Land ..the land of the believers .he would have omitted that part from the Quran .. insulting our prophet, like #18 did .. proves his ignorance and blindness . fortunately though , he is representing a fading COLT ...on its way out ..as god promised in the Quran .
22. Steve @ 6; "Then it is the same for Catholics"
leo ,   USA   (04.11.09)
And why does it surprise you? Don't Christians base their belief on belief of the Jews?
23. Mohammed @ 20;
leo ,   USA   (04.11.09)
"Talmud is a zionist book ..man made nothing Holy about it ..it is created to make justifications" I would like to hear your opinion regarding Hadith and Sharia.
24. Provoking God - Hail Ra Horus?!
Josh   (04.14.09)
Proof once again that we have failed and follow false prophets of Babylonian brainwashing. Baalam and Balak would be proud. Rabbis?! How can blessings the sun have anything whatsoever to do with anything other that the Ra god the Egyptians worshipped. In the prayer we are asked to say that God told us to do this? What next a journey into the book of the dead. We are choose life and Egypt is choose death, isn't this correct? There is a reason why we cannot recognize other gods and recognizing the sun as some entity on Peasach is nothing more than provocation. This when the world is listening to louder and louder cries against Israel. Do I need to draw you a map of what happened in history? There is a reason why ra is the Hebrew word for evil. I for one am abandoning the rabbis misleading and damaging teachings for common sense. Torah requires me to protect her laws and in so doing myself. I will not bow to Haman and I certainly wont be blessing the Sun. Chet Chet Chet. Torah bPeh is the excuse again?
