His appointment is another indication of the radicalism of Israel. He was aided in his release by many progressive groups and then in his absorption process into Israel by journalists and writers who saw him as a symbol of morality and honesty. He betrayed most of those who supported him here, especially when he entered politics .He has proved himself to be a reflection of the malaise afflicting our society and of its loss of moral balance. Nowhere is this better understood than in the younger generation of American Jews for whom Israel is not a priority and for which Sharansky represents the same old same old. The Jewish Agency is an anachronism for which he may be very suitable. To make it of value he needs to address whether it has a relevance to both Israel and Diaspora. One way is to make it representative of all the Diaspora, and not just the wealthy. He will have to learn new tricks if he is to succeed in one crucial aspect of his new role - convincing this new American Jewish generation that not only is Israel worthy of their support but also worthy of their money.

G'od forbid,I am not judging Sharansky since I know very little about him.I am driven by impressions,few readings and a fact.The fact is that when I visited Beit Hatefutzot for the last time , by the middle to the end of 2007, it was a museum literally falling apart,which is a sin considering the precious information that museum hosts. I know that Sharansky suffered for many years in prison for being a Zionist and wanting to make aliyah. On the other hand he seems willing to let non-Jewish Russians continue to make aliyah. I have read that the last several years, the vast majority of olim from the FSU are not Jewish. We do not need them here. Maybe Sharansky won't come out against this because his own brother's wife and kids are not Jewish. They made aliyah years ago and then left for America.Instead of wasting money on non-Jews, use it to help the Jews who already live here. We must keep this country Jewish.
