22 Talkbacks for this article
1. Goodwill gestures
Sarah ,   New York City, USA   (04.21.09)
I think the Palestinians should go first.
2. Bibi(Avi) Don't Sell Israel To the Wolves
Dav Lev ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (04.21.09)
The expression w/o Egypt there can be no war and w/o Syria, there can be no peace applies to Iran. W/O Iran (and Hamas/Hezbollah) on board for any peace deal with all the Palestinians..there can be no peace. Why would Israel agree to the 67 borders (with minor adjustments) if Iran's attitude and it's deeds still call for it's destruction? It makes no sense. Israel should demand (as should the US) Iran stop it's enrichment and verify forever, it won't start it up again (see No. Korea as an example of what can go wrong). The 2 state solution under current conditions is laughable and Obama and his advisers know it. Now, Israel has to become pro-active. Bibi and Avi are both patriots and won't sell Israel to the wolves ( I hope)
3. "Obama: we can't talk forever"
Cameron ,   USA   (04.21.09)
That a progressive warrior should speak such blasphemy! The world turned upside down.
4. Israel will last forever, obama will not!
(04.21.09)
5. to2
suha ,   jerusalem   (04.21.09)
you must recognise that there are two problemes and two enemies one is palastinians the other is iran . so you can not ignore or deal with both as one problem or one enemy
6. Yes you can
Frank ,   Canada   (04.21.09)
Obama can talk forever, that's how he fooled Americans.
7. #1 Sara, too late
ben Ish   (04.21.09)
pals cannot go first because Israel already has been making "gestures" for years. unless rockets, bombs, and intifada are also considered 'gestures'
8. Seems every time Israel makes a gesture some Jew gets shot
Sam ,   Canada   (04.21.09)
Removing roadblocks appears like an invitation for terrorists to shoot Jews. It looks safer for Israel to give the Palestinians ice cream.
9. #2 Palis=aximoron, Jordan, simple, no problem.
(04.21.09)
no problem, no enemy! Iranian monkey blowing smoke to intimidate the little obama. Suha, get lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10. Im looking forward 2 good gestures from Iran,Hamas&Hezballah
Alan ,   SA   (04.21.09)
11. Obama says whatever the situation calls for.
secede Texas & Okla ,   from OBAMASTAN!   (04.21.09)
He truely is the "magic negro" the L.A. Times said he was. His Orwellian "double speak" magically morphs into just the right words needed for the moment. Later, different words will be used to dispell anyone calling him a man of false promises. Now, before anyone starts calling this Native American racist... just remember the L.A. Times called him that and the author of the story is a black man, himself!
12. #5 Iran is a problem, Pals just a nuisance
(04.21.09)
13. YOU, OBAMA
(04.22.09)
can continue to talk as much as you wish. israel is not talking anymore. we talked since oslo and look at hwat happened. olmert was the most terrifyingly generous israeli towards the pa and we got bombed and missiled. too bad you want a safe exit out of iraq and afghanistan, but do not sacrifice israel on the altar to your success. continue talking as much as you wish. we have stopped talking and stopped listening to what america wants on our behalf. we will make our security decisions without input and pressure when tghe time comes that we have a sane vis a vis to talk to. better improve relations between the two mad dogs, hamas and fateh, then you can talk.
14. Same simplistic ideas as Bush and as worthless too.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.22.09)
15. The dialogue with Egypt and Jordan is reasonable
Ypip ,   Canada   (04.22.09)
16. Obama, keep talking...
Ginette ,   Toronto, Canada   (04.22.09)
but let Israel do what needs to be done for its own security. # 13 (with no name), I agree with every line you wrote. Like they say "talk is cheap". I was in the States during both conventions (Republican & Democrat); I tried to warn my US friends about Obama's speeches. He sounded too evangelistically for my taste. It was like, tell the people what they want to hear and you will get what you want in return...even the presidency! Head of States have done enough rounds of talks, more often than not to the detriment of Israel; the surrounding Arab countries just want its destruction. So for the State of Israel, no more talk, it's time for real action. The whole world can talk all they want; they will get tired before we do.
17. Agreed, #11
Cameron ,   USA   (04.22.09)
A glib, slick lawyer if ever there was one. Like how he promised to protect the intelligence services from prosecution, then reversed his position in the space of a day? Truly, a troubling leader for troubling times.
18. If only
zbrk ,   Eshkolot   (04.22.09)
Hey, President O! Where is it written that "We can't talk forever?" Why don't you tell us exactly at what point "steps have to be taken," and what you perceive those steps to be? Can you define, in terms of body bags, exactly what "progress on the ground," you want to see? Exactly how many dead Jews will it take to make you happy?
19. A better future for the Arabs of Judea, Samaria and Gaza.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (04.22.09)
As Israel has restored its “aura of invincibility” there can be a semblance of hope for a better future. Israel’s enemies should come to realize that they have truly been defeated, that they cannot continue the system that led to the war, and that their dream of conquest is dead. The solution to the misery of the Arabs living in Judea, Samaria and Gaza exist : they should think about emigrating, discretely, to other Arab countries before it is too late, (most of these countries are not very populated and can easily integrate them). That is the real solution as explained at : http://xrl.us/bi5c8
20. Israel will attack Iran, dont do it now though.
Jonathan ,   USA   (04.22.09)
I am #1 supporter of Israel and support a full fledged offensive against Iran, an attack that would in due time topple the rogue-regime curropt gov't. #NOW IS NOT THE TIME# Israel undoubtedly has the technology to see when a missle is even being brought to a launchpad and then is the time to react, or even when Israel is sure that they have the nukes in which case they should strike because unlike in the Cold War there cannot be a nuclear stalemate because they are crazy. If israel attacks now by herself im sure she would win, but she would also look like the aggressor. The worst thing seems to be that they would attack and end up like Iraq where they go in a find out that there never were WMD's. And im sure there are alot of things we arent being told behind the scenes, dont underestimate Israeli espionage!
21. Mr Obama, did you say that with or w/o a teleprompter?
israeli ,   israel   (04.22.09)
22. We're with you, Obama!
Rabbi Maurice Harris ,   Eugene, OR   (04.24.09)
Despite the nasty barbs that we see in talk-back from the Israeli right wing, millions of Israeli and American Jews share the President's hope and wish for a two-state future. This is the kind of real friendship that Israel needs. The Obama-haters resent a President who understands that Israel's survival rests on finding a way *out* of occupying the West Bank, not trying to take it over forever. The right wing has misunderstood the situation. God bless this President, the 78% of American Jews who voted for him, the over 75% of Israelis and 70% of Palestinians who recently expressed their support in polling for a two-state solution. And because I've already received nasty attacks for expressing progressive Jewish views on talk backs like this one, I'll just say in advance that I'm joined by countless rabbinic colleagues and many progressive Zionist organizations. The far right doesn't own love of Israel - it just seems to attract people who like to discredit and insult Jews who disagree with their views.
