31. JUST SAY NO NOW !
B.E.MOSS ,   ELKO,NV. U.S.A   (04.23.09)
AMEN BROTHER ! STAND UP FOR ISRAEL BEFORE IT'S TO LATE
32. #3 SANDRA
(04.23.09)
ISRAEL IS NOT AND WILL NEVER BE A WHORE COMPLICIT IN ITS OWN DESTRUCTION. PERIOD! as to the billions that america sends us. first, let me clue you in: 1. america sends only 3 billion per year in support of the israeli military. NOT ECONOMIC AID!. this 3 billion per year is meant for israel to "return it back to the usa" in the form of israel spending these billions IN AMERICA...BY BUYING AMERICAN MILITARY HARDWARE. thus, creating jobs for the american defense department and jobs for the american military industry....not for israeli profit or job making in israel!!!!!! america doesn't allow israel to export israeli military hardware which is more sophisticated than the usa's. this is because the usa doesn't want israeli superior competition for their own hardware. simple business here. the usa won't even allow israel to put its own technology in fighter jets we purchase from the usa because they fear competition with us in the military international export. so, in a sense, israel is basically returning all the three billions annualy to the usa by purchasing military hardware ONLY FROM THE USA AND NOT MUCH FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. in this way america ensures that hundred of thousands of its own people are EMPLOYED AND KEEP BEING EMPLOYED IN THE ARMS INDUSTRY, DEFENSE DEPARTMENT AND MILITARY RESEARCH. I WOULD SAY THE USA IS PROFITING MUCH MORE FROM THIS 3 BILLION ANNUALLY THAN ISRAEL IS. FOR ISRAEL IT IS FOR SECURITY. FOR AMERICA IT IS GREAT BUSINESS AND EMPLOYMENT. 2. the 3 billion annually from the usa is NEVER USED FOR ECONOMIC PURPOSES BY ISRAEL. israel is not a third world country like yours or the arab states or many african states. it is a giant of brain power and the biggest high tech exporter, magnificent medical research, pharmaceutical and.....the computer you are using now and its chip discovery were done in israel. otherwise you, would not have a computer able to work. also, the 3 billion annually is only 1% of israel's gross national product. ONLY ONE PERCENT!!!! do you really think that israel can't forgo this 3 billions and survive economically? you are completely ignorant to believe that israel economic survival depends on these 3 billions. WE DO NOT NEED THEM! we are self sufficient! the 3 billion is a military business deal better for the usa than for israel. the usa had forbidden israel to manufacture any of its own made military jets, etc... because they fear israeli superiority. and, for israel to have the usa in its corner, yes, they have to abide by the american rules. HOWEVER, THOSE RULES, WHEN IT COMES TO ISRAEL COMITTING NATIONAL SUICIDE HAVE RED LINES AND PERSONALLY, WE AS A NATION REFUSE TO PUT OUR SECURITY IN THE HANDS OF IGNORANT PEOPLE FROM THE OUTSIDE LIKE THE EU AND THE USA WHO HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT ARAB MENTALITY, ARAB MODUS OPERANDI AND THEV EXPERIENCE WE HAVE HAD WITH THEIR AGENDA TOWARDS ISRAEL FOR 100 YEARS. let me remond you that egypt gets 2.8 billions annually from the usa. monies that keep them in check and keep the peace they signed with israel a matter of reality and continuation. no one is threatening egypt. hence, no pressure to "honor" this money lent with any sacrifices. by the way, egypt is exempt from returning a penny of this aid. sadly, considering their awful economy and failed state and economic misery, they use all the billions gotten from the usa for miltary purchases, their people be damned (50% illiteracy and poverty). all arab countries receiving usa aid never have to return these monies to the usa in any shape or form. instead of improving their economies, they buy military power. for what??? prof. amitai helger, phd, jd. hebrew university, jerusalem israel
33. #22 - John, You forget that this is the Middle East...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (04.23.09)
International law is rarely, if ever, obeyed or enforced by the Arab regimes here. You also forget that our "peace treaties" with Egypt and Jordan are really not treaties with the nations per se, but rather treaties with the regimes that rule those nations- regimes seriously struggling to keep their countries from becoming Islamic theocracies. Also, you fail to understand that there is something called the "Right of Return" that every Arab power refuses to budge on in terms of a peace agreement- even Saudi Arabia. Demanding that Israel let millions of hostile foreigners into its territory has only one purpose- denying Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state. You can argue the whole, "but what rights do non-Jews have in a Jewish state" argument all you like, but you need to ask yourself one important question that fails to be addressed in international discourse: What rights do non-Arabs have in an "Arab Republic" like Syria or Egypt? John, your intentions are noble, but your solutions to the problems here are clouded by naivete. Israel can trust none save herself when it comes to self-defense and having her best interests in mind, especially when she's surrounded by at least 3 failed states...
34. olmerts cousin-both would be destroyers of israel
clost muslims ,   pres. obama   (04.23.09)
forget relying on the usa under its new administrator they are busy arming fatah jordan and lebanon while cutting back on arms sales to us. i wouldn't trust them or share any of our intelligence with america anymore they would be liable to inform their new allies to use it against us. we are on our own.
35. A little confused...
James ,   LA, USA   (04.23.09)
I don't understand. Is the author forgetting about those people called the Palestinians? Is he suggesting a binational state? As a zionist I think that's the absolute worst idea. You Israelis are going to regret missing the opportunity for two states when your pledging allegiance to "Israelestine".
36. Put forth the transfer option
Vaydeem ,   LA   (04.24.09)
Rechavem Zee'vi HY'D ZT'L and Rabbi Meir Kahane HY'D ZT'L were killed for addressing this problem with the transfer. It is only a removal of many of the Arabs or a terrorist state.
37. The Solution is.....
Yaron ,   USA   (04.24.09)
Jordan is Palestine. Let's face it folks....the majority of the population is Palestinian and that was in fact what was intended during the Mandate, had the Arabs not waged a war on Israel and forced her to accept the armistice lines of 1948. The 67 borders are a farce and simply a result of Arab aggression. The most practical solution is a seperation of the populations and compensation to Jordan for accepting the remainder of their true countrymen. Let's face it, the Hashemites are a minority ruling a majority anyway. Why protect the status quo when it hurts Israel. Is it any wonder the King of Jordan is SO interested in the two state solution. Oh, by the way....who do all the do-gooders posting here suggest the Israelis talk to in order to attain peace? Hamas, Fatah, or Iran? It is delusional to believe that the Arab end-game is a 2 state solution. It is simply a step in their overall plan of annihalation of Israel. Interestingly all those who post from the UK are so concerned yet it was their government that is directly responsible for the mess in the ME.
38. Palestinians already have a state!
Aaron ,   SF, USA   (04.23.09)
It is called Jordan. Why oh why don't people know their history?
39. Almost
Efrat ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.24.09)
It's interesting, certainly, and I want to believe it, but what will be done with the millions of Palestinians in those regions? Will they become citizens of Israel? Deported? The real reason for a 2 state solution is that we are losing the demographic war. Rejecting the idea won't fix that.
40. Does Israel receive your money?
Jeff ,   Chicago   (04.24.09)
Firstly, Israel doesn't need "billions" . I am sick of all the Israel haters bringing up this issue. The US aid creates tens of thousands of jobs in US, damages Israel's sovereignty. The "Aid" also loses jobs for Israelis. This is hilarious. Someone from Haiti calling Israelis beggars. LOL
41. Right on the money Aaron!
Yaron ,   USA   (04.24.09)
42. To Joe, #33.
John ,   Europe   (04.24.09)
First, thank you for being civilized in your talk back. It is a refreshment to see that people with different opinions here can talk normally and not being accused of being "self hating Jew" or "Amalek spawn" etc. Let me be brief: 1) You are right, your peace treaties with Egipt and Jordan are treaties with regime. But, also, apply here the same thing you said: this is Middle east. Yes, force is the king here. So, it is stupid to think that these regimes will back up if they ever will have any force. So, you are safe as long as they are around - and you saw what happened with wrong regimes in Afganistan, and is happening in Pakistan. I think that Arabs will learn. Yes, it will be painful, yes, it WILL take decades, yes, I bet you and I will be again caring diapers by that time again, but, it will happen. See that today they "appeal" on courts. They protest. They hold rallies. Etc. Before? O, no, remember: KILLING, and that's it. What's today? 1969? Darn, there were 2 years without full scale attack on Israel! We need to go again. Where is my rifle? Also, please, remember that Israel ALSO was not created overnight. If Hertzog was in 1899, and Israel is in 1947, that is, well, almost half of century... 2) Right of return - who said that I support it? I don't. I do not support giving of Jerusalem. I support giving West Bank and pieces for exchange of Jerusalem and Ariel region. The only thing that I support returning fully is Shebaa - it is strategically not very relevant, but we gain much with returning it. For example, we can force Lebanon to piece if we do it. We give it back - we are clean. Hez attacks - he is the bad guy, conqueror. Also, do not forget also: if there is a state with the name of the people, you CANNOT MAKE ANOTHER ONE! You cannot claim that you are American and ask for another America: UN charter states that it is 1 country for 1 nation! So, by creating the Palestine, you paradoxically - protect Israel! You can have 20 million of Palestinians back and only 4 million Jews, but if you want to turn Israel to Palestine - you can't! The only thing you can do is make a referendum for annexation - but for that you need to have, by int. law, 100% support! And YOU CANNOT have that if you have any Jew alive. :) Besides, after you create Palestine, you will say - "Hey, forget about it! We will give you money reparations, we will gladly make you a new homes, we will INVEST (Bibi is clever!) in your territories, but you need people to jump start your state! Besides, you want to live with sons of pigs and apes, traitors of Muhhamed? No, guys, let's be good neighbors." You will see how quickly they will accept! Remember how quickly they sold their properties in Jerusalem! There was a huge scandal about it, even in Europe were quite a few reportages. :) 3) The Jewish state and Torah as constitution - yes or no - is not something that I would like to discuss here. This is too wide. So, let's not talk about it. But - I bet you that if you will have Palestine and Israel side by side and peaceful conditions, that PALESTINE will want to become part of Israel in 70 years from that moment! I am pretty sure this will happen. Why? Because they simply did not learn to care for themselves! Look at Gaza! They mourned for Israel when Hammas oppressed them! ALL that Jews have to do now is to be true enemy of Palestinians: give them NOT WHAT THEY NEED, but WHAT THEY WANT. I am not sure if I am naive... :)
43. Clarification
gs don morris ,   Netanya, Israel   (04.24.09)
Yes Israel should "wean itself" from USA aide. However, the dollars do not buy clothes and food, it is primarily mandated by the agreements to be spent on USA military built weapons and systems-only their systems. This, in turn, keeps thousands of jobs open in America-thus a mutual beneficial arrangement. The USA needs Israel's assistance. It will be interesting to watch the current Israel administration response to the USA pressure.
44. Just say: "No"
Moshe Zuriel ,   Bnei Brak, Israel   (04.24.09)
A good definition of prudence and wisdom is to be able to foresee future situations and take proper precautions so not to be damaged or suffer bad consequences. Only fools don't give thought to future results of present day indifference. After twenty odd years of appeasing our warlike neighbors and having a 1500 deathroll and 3000 casualties, isn't it foolish to continue the same sheepish reaction? Can we not learn anything from Chaimberlain's misplaced optimism in the 1930's? The basic law of life is self preservation. You cannot follow international advice if it is at the increasing expense of more and more terror. Think how did the Americans treat the threat of Indian war tribes? By appeasement? Read your history books. This article by Meltzer is great. I hope to hear more from him on this important issue.
45. Self Determination
Santa ,   North poll   (04.24.09)
" Convinced that all peoples have an inalienable right to complete freedom, the exercise of their sovereignty and the integrity of their national territory.....and to this end declare that 1- The subsection of peoples to alien subjugation domination and exploitation constitutes a denial of fundamental human right , is contrary to the Charter of the United Nations and is an impediment to the promotion of world peace and co-operation. 2- All peoples have the right of self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development. 3- Inadequacy of political, economic, social or educational preparedness should never serve as a pretext for delaying independence. 4- All armed action or repressive measures of all kinds directed against dependent peoples shall cease in order to enable them to exercise peacefully and freely their right to complete independence, and the integrity of their national territory shall be respected. 5- ...6- Any attempt aimed at the partial or total disruption of national unity and the territorial integrity of a country is incompatible with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. " 14 Dec 1960 ..and now you still say NO to 2 States ..sigh ignorant
46. To Israelis
Rea1ity Check ,   USA   (04.24.09)
You had a great chance to decisively defeat Hizzbollah/Iran when we had Bush, you chose lefty Olmert and near self destruction. Now we have lefty Obama and you want to complain? We have our own problems so you will have to deal with yours and the ones you've made by yourselves.
47. National suicide
Ana ,   USA   (04.24.09)
Bravo! finally somebody is saying the truth without going around it.
48. "JUST SAY NO"
Shaul M. ,   Hanover Pk, IL, USA   (04.24.09)
Just read the above in Ynet, by Yoel Meltzer published 04.23.09 / Israel Opinion. He is so right and correct that a copy should be provided to all members of Knesseth. Israel is a sovereign nation and it's about time that the State say NO to the United States and any other country when it comes to internal and international matters. Thanks Yoel for you article and hopefully it will sink in. Congratulations and Yasher Coach
49. #45 what would you say if people declared war with you?
israeli   (04.24.09)
cite the un chrter? many jews are hiding their origins as we speak, unless they are in israel. it is not acceptable that jews should start making claims on land of europe, same way as it is not acceptable that arabs should start making claims on land of palestine, (now israel & WB) YOU LISTEN TO ARABS BECAUSE THEY MAKE MORE NOISE arabs do resolve to violence in making a claim on a land they immigrated to from other part of middle east and arabia. YOU LISTEN TO ARABS BECAUSE THEY COUNT MORE PEOPLE then the jewish population in the world, and have a greater electoral power YOU LISTEN TO ARABS BECAUSE OF OIL didn't iran just try to raise oil prices? the conference in geneva, where people walked out on their leader's speach, gave them the great excuse. peace will come, when arabs shall see jews as another semitic nation, who also write from right to left etc. a brain is a powerfull resource, and for many generations children from the age of 3 were taught how to read and write and studies tora. while arab children concentrated on other things at the age of 3, and no one can blame them.
50. #42 - John, If we give them enough rope...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (04.24.09)
If we give them enough rope to hang themselves with, though, my fear is that they'll end up hanging quite a few of us before they eventually hang themselves. Besides, is "giving them enough rope to hang themselves" really a moral and ethical solution to this problem? Do you really have no moral qualms about letting the West Bank become another Gaza Strip? Our goal in ending this conflict should be to minimize the amount of bloodshed and the only way to do this is to coordinate with Jordan to have the Palestinians' Jordanian citizenship reinstated while annexing the land via the Israeli Initiative. Points 1 and 2: You make excellent and compelling arguments to which I also have counterpoints I would like to make. Nevertheless, talkback limits (and the approach of Shabbat) keep me from discussing this with you until a later point in time, I'm afraid. Point 3: What I meant by the words "Jewish state" was not so much a Halakhic state as a state with Jews as an ethnic majority and a state whose symbols and culture are largely Jewish. A common point of Arab rhetoric is that the existence of a Jewish state automatically means that Arabs are sidelined and discriminated against within this Jewish state because it functions solely as a state for Jews (i.e. and not a state for Arabs). The counterpoint to this argument, however, is that these criticisms largely come from people who live in "Arab Republics" like Syria and Egypt- "Arab Republics" whose Arab nature inherently and overtly discriminate against non-Arabs (like Kurds, Copts and, yes, even Jews). Here is where I think our Hasbara is flawed- we refuse to take off the gloves and apply the same level of criticism to Arab and Palestinian Nationalism that they apply to Zionism. Will this hypothetical Palestinian state be a racist and apartheid regime? Look at Gaza. Will it be a massive violator of human rights? Look at Gaza. Will it engage in ethnic cleansing and wanton desecration of holy sites? Look at Gaza. Shabbat Shalom (or have a nice weekend, if you prefer)...
51. Okay, then just say no
Giora Me'ir ,   USA   (04.24.09)
to U.S. aid. While should we subsidize a policy that is not in the U.S. national interest.
52. OBANO?
Zohan ,   Tel Aviv   (04.24.09)
53. Hey Santa....flawed logic
Yaron ,   USA   (04.24.09)
You would be correct if we were dealing with the Swiss but we are not. We are talking about savagery that has never been seen in the North Pole....I assure you. If national aspiration were in fact the Palestinian end-game, we would be there already. But I think you and I both know what the true intentions of these fake national aspirtationists. In light of the fact that you know the truth, I can only deduce that you are a hater of Israel and speak out of both sides of your mouth. Better get back to making toys for the children of Christmas (assuming there is no recession in the North Pole of course) and leave the difficult challenges for those with moral fortitude to make the right decisions.
54. The Jewish state, should not seek to make peace at any price
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (04.25.09)
There is no hope for the Jewish state surviving in the nastiest neighborhood in the world if it presents itself as inwardly irresolute and unwilling to engage in war. The Arab adversary should always be fully aware that Israel is resolute, steadfast and more ready to wage war than agree to a fraudulent peace. If the Arab and Muslim world rejects Israel, it must live with the consequences of its enmity and become the ultimate loser. A Jewish state, which no longer seeks to make peace at any price will prosper and grow. It will also engender respect from both its friends and its enemies. As to the Palestinians peoplehood: http://xrl.us/osjrj
55. no 2 states
ben w ,   boca raton, fl   (04.25.09)
let's say they screwed up the trust issue - but then again NO, we CAN trust a 100% that they'll do from the east what they do out of lebanon and aza, then what? turn the clock back? let's think BEFORE we do something totally non-beneficial for us just in order to please someone else's interests on the opposite side of the globe!
56. simplistic writing and shoddy reasoning
jonathan ,   nyc   (04.25.09)
terrible, terrible article: faulty use of gaza as precedent without accounting for other causes. assuming what he purports to conclude. using right-wing rhetoric and logic and implausibly denying same (thus costing himself credibility). using awkward phrasing and transitions that only a writer unsure of himself would use.
57. Massada - True Zionist
Maureen   (04.25.09)
I think it's time that you begged; borrowed or bought yourself a Bible. God has something else to say when the whole world turns against Israel. Chin up... you might get a place in heaven yet!
58. if it is not two states
shosho ,   on the land   (04.26.09)
it will be one state to all the people with the same rights i will accept it and all the palastinians will and obama will support it .un like it . so the desicion will be this or that there is no third choise
59. We cannot be 51st state
Steve   (04.26.09)
Now is the time to see if Bibi has any balls. If we do everything Obama wants, we will lose the Golan, we will lose Judea and Samaria, and most importantly we will lose Jerusalem. We will be left with a Hamas-run Islamist state firing rockets daily into Tel Aviv. When Obama asks us to commit national suicide, we have to tell him 'no'. If he cuts off aid, and refuses to sell us military equipment, so be it. We cannot destroy our country. If survival means pissing off Barack Obama, we'll damn well piss him off. We cannot allow a man who is clearly against us to dictate to us how we should run our own country. Bibi has got to tell Obama 'sorry, we won't do that.'
60. Bravo!
Brad ,   USA   (05.01.09)
Israel is the Israeli state, and there are already plenty of third world terrorist states. We don't need another one.
