1. Of course it is better for you!
Ibrahim ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.09)
Who cares about Millions of Palestinians who have been denied their basic rights as humans, with all these checkpoints and racist walls and fences surrounding their cities and villages, while you are enjoying the home stolen by your Zionists brothers from Palestinian Arabs by force. Keep this status quo until someone will come and wake you up! Hopefully it will be soon.
2. status quo
Gregory ,   Rehovot   (04.30.09)
Exceptionally clear explanation. I hope this understanding will spread. One can only add that the status quo allows us to lead a normal life. Alternatives all look worse. On the other hand, it seems that the other side must worry about changing the status quo as they are unable to live a normal life. It may take time but at some point they may start to be more flexible when they recognize that we can live that forever.
3. The "palestinians" will never agree to a just peace and they
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.30.09)
could not govern themselves if they had a state. There is no solution other than leaving well enough alone and letting the arabs moan and groan and complain for another 61 years.
4. ronen,
boris, ,   ny, us   (04.30.09)
all the problems you mentioned are gone, if israel encourages arabs to immigrate to the countries of their origin or anywhere they want.
5. Great and intelligent analysis...
Ezra ,   Canada   (04.30.09)
...which would also lead to the conclusion that many settlements in Judea&Samaria strategic areas should be developped as military assets.
6. In praise of status quo = in praise of Apartheid state
Mandela   (04.30.09)
Carter was right after all.
7. Status Quo- Finally!
Shlomo ,   LA   (04.30.09)
Finally, a reasonable look at why we must stop the call to deal just to deal. Clearly the parties (and clearly mostly the Arab parties) are not ready to deal. Time and demographics favor Israel, so lets allow the status quo to go on and to stop rushing into inane ideas that will not produce a viable long term plan (the 2 state solution).
8. YNET COMING TO ITS SENSES THANKS !!!
Trumpeldor ,   eurabyia   (04.30.09)
9. #1 YOU ARE WRONG
DAN ,   NEW YORK   (04.30.09)
THE LAND WASNT STOLEN, IT WAS PURCHASED. YOUR BROTHERS STARTED A WAR AND LOST. DONT GAMBLE, AND GO ALL IN, THEN DEMAND YOUR CHIPS BACK. THEY NEVER HAD SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE LAND, THEY TRIED TO EXTERMINATE THE JEWS WITH MASSACRES AND WAR. AND THEY HAD ALL THE BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS UNTIL THEY CAM EUP WITH THE IDEA OF INTIFADA AND STARTED BLOWING THEMSELVES UP ON OUR BUSSES. FOOL ME ONCE.... GO MOVE TO JORDAN YA MANYAK, THATS THE REAL PALESTINE. GO ON GET MOVING. TAKE ALL THE SHKUTZ WITH YOU. BECAUSE YOUR NEVER GETING THIS LAND BACK. EVER!!
10. #6, why do i suspect you'd think that no matter what.....
Danny   (04.30.09)
11. #4 how are you going to pull that off?
David G   (04.30.09)
I imagine few (particullarly on the right) would be upset if the Palestinians would enmass decide to move to other nations. The problem you do not want to face is how will you make those states accept them? The Arab nations know very well that if they accept a million West Bank Palestinians into their contries the conflict would be over, and so they have done everything in their power to prevent that from happening. What are you going to do to change their minds?
12. Delusional analysis
Avi ,   USA   (04.30.09)
From the author's point of view, the Palestinians must be some form of automatons without needs and without will. Otherwise how can he ever assume that the current situation is sustainable? Furthermore, Mar Shoval, you forgot to mention that the democratic problem is not solved either in the current situation. Israel is a democratic country just for Israeli citizens. An independent, demilitarized Palestinian state is fully possible and would solve all problems. The Palestinians will never be able to build any significant military capability covertly. More so, I think most of them got the message after the last Gaza operation: don't mess with Israel.
13. Oh Boy, Some People should be writters
GHook93 ,   Chicago   (04.30.09)
The current situation is unsustainable. There have been cases, although not recently, where a 1 group takes over another aka US and the Indians and Hawaii. China over Tibet. England and Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Gilbater and the Fauk Islands. The Arab crusades in eh 6-9 century taking over the ME and North Africa. More often than not it fails. In this situation it won't work. So you have 4 choices: (1) Annex all of Greater Israel and having either a non-Jewish state (giving the Arabs equal voting right) or apartheid! (2) Expell all the Arabs, good luck! It would be impossible without being invade about every Muslim Army, including Egypt and Turkey, and losing support from the West, including the US (3) Status quo - continuing the occupation is not going to work out in the long run. (4) The 2 state solution #4 is the only real solution!
14. Ronen, you are delutional
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (04.30.09)
While I appreciate where you are coming from and what your goal is: to avoid the creation of a Palestinian state, I strongly disagree that we can leave the status quo. Enough Arabs and Jews are killed each and every year to quash any thought of leaving the status quo. Instead, we need to strongly consider finishing the population reallignment that began in the 1950's.
15. STATUS QUO = SECURITY ......IT'S ALL THAT MATTERS
david   (04.30.09)
No one can guard Israel like Israeli's, primarily because you almost have to have lived there for many months before you can begin to comprehend what might happen if Israeli's we're to 'outsource' their security. We can look to southern Lebanon as a primary example, the UN guards the border in principal, but do they really prevent Hezbollah from arming, aiming & shooting 10,000's rockets? Har Dov does more for Israel's security in the North then do UN troops. It is NOT currently possible for Israel to abandon the Judea & Samara high ground, evacuate & displace 500,000 citizens & expose the rest of it's population to a threat of swift annihilation. Any 'friend' that refuses to recognize these concerns will need to be thoroughly, consistently & deliberately reminded.
16. #1 the Palestinians do not have a state BECAUSE....
Aaron ,   SF, USA   (04.30.09)
...they chose war over compromise!!!!!!!! likewise, their conditions were pretty damn good before 1991. Then Arafat decided that to reach peace and freedom the Palestinians need to attack Israel daily. Backwards thinking from corrupt leadership.
17. UNHCR needs to absorb the UNRWA
Aaron ,   SF, USA   (04.30.09)
Even *truthful* Palestinians will admit that one of the biggest problems is their special treatment as a group of refugees with different definitions than all the other refugees in the world. Peace will come when the Palestinians realize they are not special, yell at the UN to make this move, and let them all resettle in their historical homeland, JORDAN.
18. #2 Gregory, you are a racist. This is what racism is.
Khalid ,   Gaza City   (04.30.09)
"One can only add that the status quo allows us to lead a normal life." Oh and what about the "rockets that kill civilians"? And what about the "crazy terrorist suicide bombers"? So it turns out you are living fine after all? What about Palestinians wanting to live a normal life?? You occupied our lands since 1967, and there was not even one Kalashnikov in Gaza or West Bank until 1999. So at least you admit that Iraelis do live "normal lives", and I can attest to you that we Palestinians do not. Please for the sake of everything that is good, just show us a little bit of justice, trust me you can still live normal lives, just not at the expense of millions of human beings.
19. Agree with #16 and want to add
Jeffrey ,   Boston   (04.30.09)
that the Quran does not teach compromise it only teaches domination and submission.
20. #1 israel small place too many people, a staus quo wont last
something's gota giv   (05.01.09)
21. Pals waiting for Israel's destruction
Sam ,   Canada   (05.01.09)
The Palestinians don't want any Jewish state. So, that removes the 2 state option. Israel won't accept a bi-national state. So, that removes that option. By default, the status quo will remain for a very long time.
22. Forgetting Demographics
Shlomo ,   LA   (05.01.09)
As it stands, in 20 years, Arabs will be at or under 20% from the sea to the Jordan, if the UN actually helped resettle those who want to leave (like they do everywhere else in the world but Israel), this number could be far lower and the need for a 2 state solution (which is a temporal need that will go away in time) is solved, and everyone can keep on. The only issue becomes when to get rid of the Waqf and take back Har Habayit.
23. Just send all arabs that came here prior to 1945 back to
Yosi M. ,   GiloJerusalem Israel   (05.01.09)
countries of origin. Heck, you would empty 2/3's of the arab areas, Jenin would become a ghost town and so would Ramala and Jerico. Ibriham and Khalid would have to go back to Egypt and Syria. It would end the apartheid of the arabs toward Jews, remember that not a single Jew lives in arabs towns and that arabs are forbidden from selling to Jews on pain of death. By the way Khalid, racism is hatred, you are a hater and racist.
24. Many other solutions
i ,   jerusalem   (05.01.09)
The big bad T-word for one. Name any arab country ( aside from the rapidly faliling Turkish experiment) that is not a dictatorship or reign of a minority over a poorer than poor and illiterate minority. The dissolution of Jordan's government would harm very few people, and the local trash can install the strongman of their choice. The same game can be played in Syria, and even better because the East Bank is by rights ours also. Egypt is a pot ready to boil over, and since anarchy is a flavor preferred by many Palis, that may be a prime relocation target really soon. Good Luck Y'all Mabrook!
25. Brilliant article
Gershon O ,   London UK   (05.01.09)
Well done to Ronen Shoval for introducing a new "paradigm"! I cant agree more that our problem is that people are looking for a "solution" to essentially an insoluble problem. We must learn to "manage" this situation just as we learn to manage certain incurable diseases. This will yield far more and better results. One disagreement : the withdrawl from gaza helped the demographic issue but degraded terribly the security situation - that is very bad and endangers hundreds of thousands of Jews in the south
26. status quo better than utopia
leib ,   madison wisconsin us   (05.01.09)
The success of disengagement from Gaza alone without extending it to Judea/Samaria would have been more solid had Israel retained the Philadelphi corridor. Also a partial Oslo would have been far better had Arafat not been brought to the territories but a Palestinian Authority been established with the locals. Of course without the promise of the second step in each case perhaps the first would never have been agreed to.
27. #11
boris, ,   ny, us   (05.01.09)
on one hand, as you should know, on one hand about 100000 arabs per year want to leave israel on their own, who wants to live in these mess, the other arabs may need some help and even strong nudge. as you noticed arabs nowadays are all over the world,so it is not israel's business to tell them where to go on another hand if israel adds more refuges to already existing in arab countries(could be done as a result of lebanon war, gaza or future operations) they would have to live with it.
28. "Convenience"
Canderra ,   US   (05.01.09)
So for "convenience" you will give up on safety, morality, AND demographics? What a great example of the moral deterioration of a country that defines a large number of its citizens as THE PROBLEM. To say nothing of the non-citizens confined to enclaves.
29. # 28
Shlomo ,   LA   (05.01.09)
Status quo is not for convinience, it is for a lack of workable options. As to morality, you must be joking. The PA is about to kill a countryman for merely selling land to a Jew, but somehow, Israel is immoral for having a security border. Funny, when I cross to Canada I don't view the border as apartheid, merely a border. Why is it one peoplewould kill their countrymen over property, but then claim how immoral it is to be screened before entering Jewish land that they would kill each other over if they sold any property to them. Again, you must be joking right?
