the very term "magen david" (shield of david) makes little or no sense when it refers to a six- (or five-) pointed star. why should a six-pointed star, davka, protect david (or his descendants)? but when it refers to two interlocked daleds (the first and last letters of "david"), it begins to make far more sense as the heraldic shield or monogram of david. but this only works for pre-aramaic script, where the daled was a triangle (like the phoenecian/greek delta), which would have predated the babylonian exile (and the adoption of the aramaic script). and as king david's monogram, what could be a more fitting emblem for the flag of the restored jewish kingdom?
