It was a proposition by Erdogan as he apparently made a deal with an Israeli firm behind close doors. There is nothing that Erdogan could not do for money and he has 19 files for fraud and corruption waiting in court. However, the area which will be cleaned off mines is Syrian-Turkish border, and most Turkish people and opposition parties fiercely oppose to the idea that this job would be done by a foreign company. Furthermore, Erdogan also proposed that after cleaning this area it will be hired to another Israeli company to do organic farming. The area is about twice as large as whole of Cyprus meaning it's huge, tens of times of Israel. And, the whole battle between Erdogan and Turkish opposition over this is the hottest debate in Turkey now. See, Erdogan is a friend of money, it looks like he made a secret deal and got his own share through a bribe, that's why he is pressing so hard to make Turkish people and Turkish secular left wing opposition party(they are very patriotic too), and nationalist oppostion to accept this deal. It seems far too unlikely though, millions of Turks are against the idea that the land, especially border land, to be hired to a foreign company. The job to clean the mines for Israel is not going to happen for sure. Under pressure by opposition, Erdogan's party removed that option from the proposition.

If you love Israel and if you want Israel to earn money you should be backing this proposition made by Erdogan. Israeli companies could earn billions from this job. Zvi, I understand your point. But, one has to double check deals if Erdogan is involved. Erdogan is the guy who supported Iraqi war, thanks to Turkish left wing opposition and nationalist opposition Turkey refused to collaborate with the US on Iraqi invasion in 2003. Then a few years back, Erdogan did some secret talks and unofficial deals with Sami Ofer while Ofer was already under corruption isues in Israel. There are far too many examples of Erdogan's way of dealing things. There are many huge corruption scandals which involves Erdogan himself, his party members, his family and his businesses. He is a man of money and would not hesitate to do anything to get more cash. Olmert may look like an angl next to him in terms of corrution. He wouldn't arrange a bid without already speaking with possible winners for his own gain.

Alot of people said alot of things during operation cast lead. Your closest ally such as the US said negative things about Cast Lead. Famous jewish people also criticized Israel about Cast Lead...Are they all enemies of the State of Israel? Can't friends voice different opinions? Turkey and Israel are allies by Bilateral treaty. Go and research the meaning of the term "ally". We have no space for conspiracy theories and/or rhetoric which is border line antisemetism. It is people like you that cause harm to Turkey's international relations. Your counterparts in Israel do just the same on the other side. Us Turks and the Jewish peoples have had cordial relations for in excess of 600 years. I don't think we will have any problems today due to afew fundamentalists on both sides. Go read the Turkish Governments White Paper on International Relations, especially the section on Israeli-Turkish relations. And observe how close the ties are between the two states.
