7. I have nothing against Chicago, #5, but I lived there.......
for about 10 years, in the 90s,right in the middle of it ( Wicker Park area) and remember it as it really was.
True, Detroit & Gary always held a heavy rep, but Chicago was grim enough at times.
When I lived there, there was a constant daily parade of gangsta knuckleheads moving up & down the streets, on foot or car, looking for someone to mess with, or shoot down.
Hell, I remember walking to the subway one evening, less than a block away from my place, and getting caught in the middle of a drive-by wearing a damn tuxedo.
I tell ye true when I say there was not one night I can recall where I did not lie in bed at night and not hear gunfire at least a few times before I went to sleep.
When the sun went down on the weekends, there was gunfire all night long.
I also do not forget the time I was walking home in my neighborhood about midday, and some SOB jumped at me with one of those long kitchen knives, and with a police station within view a block away.
Now, I'm a big Irish lad, with plenty of muscle, and can swing it in gear if I have to, but I was always on my guard every day, and never forgot for a moment how easy it was wind up in a situation, literally out of the blue, where others would swing the knives & pistols out.
The years I spent in that city were the only time in my life where I seriously debated packing a piece.
Overall, I enjoyed Chicago in that I did some interesting things, liked my housing, ate like a king, had some good friends, and knew my share of ladies, but man, you always had to watch your step in the Chi, and if you are from there, you know I do not exaggerate.
