1. Wishful thinking feels nice for a while but is of no lasting
Hen   (06.08.09)
benefit. The people of the USA are turning insane - we can argue about the why and wherefore, but they have in recent months turned their country from a capitalist into a communist-fascist one. The USA is rapidly becoming a police state with a personality cult centred on Imam Hussein. Don't trust the USA, the USA has gone insane and is no longer Israel's friend. Be realistic, wake up and smell the Starbucks coffee.
2. Yawn !!!... same old Hogwash from Ettinger
Peter Morris ,   New Zealand   (06.08.09)
Ettinger probably dosen't realize it but since the advent of the Internet western populations are much better informed on the Middle East. With statistics such as 1500 killed in Gaza by IDF mainly civilians versus 13 killed in Israel some by "friendly fire" and they start wondering "maybe what the media has been saying all this time needs reexamination." Factors such as the Bernie Madoff heist, more transparency in political funding are going to mean Israel's hold over US Congress and Senate is not a given. The selective sort of reasoning applied in the above article also is no longer accepted without a second thought. Perhaps times are changing even if Israels man in the Whitehouse i.e. Rahm Emanuel has an influence.
3. Measured article
David Olesker ,   Jerusalem Israel   (06.08.09)
No reason to panic, no reason to be comlacent, every reason to act.
4. Straight thinking from an Israeli
Sidney ,   USA   (06.08.09)
How unusual, how refreshing.
5. I agree with #1
Steve   (06.08.09)
It could be that this "special" relationship between Israel and America is changing. President Hussein's hostility toward Israel is open and blatant. What American voter did not know about this man and his associations with Israel-haters? Mr. Obama's entire adult life, he maintained these repulsive associations. What American citizen did not know about Mr. Obama's hateful minister of twenty-something years, Jeremiah Wright, who Obama could no more disown than he could disown the black community or his white grandmother. Were Americans Germans in the early nineteen thirties, who would they have voted for? If my advice were heeded, Israel would work toward becoming as economically and militarily independent of the U.S. as is feasible. No need to intentionally make an enemy of America; just wean yourself off this unhealthy dependency. This U.S. president has his sights set on the Jewish state - "the source of all the tension in the region" - and no one of any significance in the U.S. appears to be standing in his way. Times are a-changing.
6. great article!
oded   (06.08.09)
and obama should read it! the us needs israel as much as it needs the us... obama knows well enough that "a 2 state solution " with its current players is simply impossible. it's a great sound bite, but that's all. israel must act now,to change the dynamics in the ME... iran must be prevented of acuiring a nuclear bomb. end of discussion.
7. Special Note to Israel. Armadillo Time
Gideon Reader   (06.08.09)
Wait. Wait. Patience. Make like an Armadillo. Ball up and wait him (the ZerOfool) out. He has brought in a gigantic economic back hoe and is going full speed ahead towards ruining the U.S.'s ecomomy; peeing on everyone's economic parade and telling them it is a gentle spring shower. The electorate, including the idiots who placed him in office, (but excluding the U.S.Jewish voters who are too freaking dumb to understand and weill support him until the last train heads to the metaphorical "East"), are twigging on to his ignorance, arrogance and drooling, blathering, three card monte economic incompetence. So between telling America that Islam is NOT about suicide bombers, assassins and murderous repression of the 7th Century, just LOVE and PEACE and all that repression is a figment of the racist's imagination, and making it too expensive to order a Pizza in, he will soon be too busy staying politically viable and ahead of the pitchforks and torches of the angry peaseants, and his Praetorean Guard of ACORN crooks and New Black Panther Party thugs will be swept aside like the sub class chaff they are. Turtle up. And his pet foulmouthed Court Jew Rahm (I was an Israel Commando)Emmanuel will fade with him.
8. Socialists/left still have the hope
Ruth ,   New York   (06.08.09)
First, socialist loved Lenin-Stalin. Then Left had a new hero Mussolini. Then National Socialist loved Hitler. Then came the saver Arafat;they loved him, they kissed him. Now the king. Can they found something little bit better than the king. Looking for answers from the Left??
9. Obama can't - but Bibi/Avigdor can
Hank N Tennessee ,   USA   (06.08.09)
Just stay the course - the Netanyahu/Lieberman government is bringing the change that you fear.
10. peres has many times jeopardized Israel
(06.08.09)
11. c'mon Steve "special relationship with Israel haters"
AY_Lamb ,   USA   (06.08.09)
I don't think Pres. Obama and the fascist evangelical wing of the GOP are having lunch and chumming around. Bush-Cheney and cronies nearly met their objective of subjugating the last remaining idolatry rejecting part of the world but, alas their evil lingers. The jesusite noise machine still rages and their minions are manipulating the defense establishment but, their may be enough of us to stop their machinations and imaginings. Keep gazing at that cross in the sky and wolfin down the pork guy and please by all means go each sunday to your church of Caesar and babble about calling yourself a Jew. Who knows ultimately this sorta thing might work?
12. Wow, AY_Lamb
Cameron ,   USA   (06.08.09)
God knows there are enough malevolent characters roaming the landscape these days, but to pad through your commentary, and realize there are spiteful, glassy-eyed, Lib robots like yourself in our midst, is just damn ominous. Your talkback was just creepy venom, son.
13. Delusions of the Jewish Right Wing
avramele   (06.08.09)
1. The Obama administration is not anti-Israel -- it is anti the Greater Land of Israel version of Israel and the destructive occupation --yes OCCUPATION 2. Given realistic hope and a bit of nudging a majority or Israelis want an end to the settlements and a return to sustainable borders 3. as for the results of the last election: 55 seats went to parties who support openly a 2 state solution but among the Likud MK's at least half a dozen (and the new ambassador to the US) would agreee to withdrawal and 2 state solution under the right circumstances --same goes for about a 1/3 of Yisrael Beiteinu. 4. The alternative for Bibi is not Obama and new elections versus maintaining his government. He can turn to Kadima and Labor and stay PM. Livni might even given up her demand or rotation if he comes around on 5. A smart Bibi response would put pressure on the Palestinians and the Arab world... Let's not be the one to never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity!
14. AY_Lamb #11: You are mistaken on several counts
Steve   (06.08.09)
1) Though I am an almost forty year registered Republican, I did not vote to re-elect George W. Bush in 2004. One term of this 'disaster' in the White House was enough. 2) I am not an Evangelical but a Jew who does not eat pork. Nor do I have to call myself a Jew. I am a Jew, born of a Jewish mother and a Jewish father. 3) Though I grew to deplore Bush's foreign policy visa vis Israel, for all the accusations by the left that the Bush administration was fascist, it is the left that is eager to circumscribe speech and other freedoms we hold dear. Fortunately, we still have the ability to speak freely - to criticize our government - no thanks to Mr. Obama and the Democrats, who would crush, extinguish, extirpate our right to speak the truth if only they can or could. In truth, these are the twenty-first century equivalent of last century's fascists.
15. To Hen #1
Brad ,   USA   (06.08.09)
As a U.S. citizen, reading your talkback was not pleasant except for the fact that it is entirely accurate. And, the lemmings in the U.S. are still blinded by Mr. young, cool, black, non-citizen, Obama. I hope Israel's leaders see the truth about Obama's muslim collaborating administration.
16. Well written! Israel is 4000 yrs old, Obama is 4 months old
Jae ,   Lynn US   (06.08.09)
You do the math. Pharoah also said no more Jewish babies. To heck with Obama if he tells Jews they cant have more kids in jerusalem. His belief in Jesus the Jewish rabbi who lived in whats now idiotically called "occupied territory" would be in question- surely jesus would not ask for making Judea and Jerusalem judenrein!!!!!
17. MOM-Cameron, I am liberal like the founders of
AY_Lamb ,   USA   (06.08.09)
the United States of America and proud of it. I use the term Fascist when I speak of the American "right wing" and usually somebody starts the "ooh you shouldn't call us names" argument or the "you are using "sophistry" or "ad hominem". I don't see the term "Liberal" as any sort of pejorative at all and actually I know it is something to be very proud of, liberal essentially equates to caring. Conservative and fascist isn't necessarily a pejorative or elaborate insult either, for crying out loud watch the Nuremberg tapes, the Fascist thought they were saving their countries and protecting the world. The problem with American conservatives and mid 20th century European fascist is they cherish their beliefs and their Nation/States so much that they will engage in extreme impassioned violence and contempt to preserve or expand them. American rightists devoutly yearn to assimilate "by any means" those that are different or deemed unacceptable by clerical interpretations of their religious text. Yeshayahu Leibowitz says it best "Christians that claim a deep love and reverence for Judaism or the Jewish people are the laity of those religions and haven't in fact read or understood the content or context of the their New testament" Look I am not religionist at all and, at most I could be called a Deist and I certainly oppose the theist that claim a religious onus to acts of aggression, malice, and oppression. The right wing in America claiming righteousness in the acts of murder and killing of the human are a "hate" from primordial times and for all times.
18. Obama is a paper tiger
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (06.08.09)
and a left wing loonie and the US population will discover that very soon Iran igmnores him North Korea ignores him .The truth whatever concession Israel makes will not be good enough for Obama He wants a one state solution called Palestine so Israel mibght as well do what it wants as a confrontation is inevitable the only question is when .Israel will get nothing in return for concessions only war and terrorism so Israel should not engage with him and increase settlement in judea as far as Obama is concerned Tel aviv is a settlement
19. Dr. Ettinger is wrong this time...
Shneerhere ,   Chitown   (06.09.09)
He is believing truths that existed 20 years ago, not now. Obama will push Israel out for the same reason Syria and and the Soviets need(ed) a Jewish scapegoat. He is ideologically committed to solving the Pali issue in Fatah/Hamas's favor. Twenty formative years of Rashid Khalidi, Rev. Wright and Susan Powers do not go unheeded. Watch out, USA is your new enemy, you just don't know it quite yet.
20. #11-american avangelical christians are more jews then you
mira ,   israel   (06.09.09)
will ever be. you are israel's hater a godless creature who has lost touch with reality and worship himself. i will take a christian any day then a a jew like u
21. Obama started many things, but it does not look like
leo ,   USA   (06.09.09)
he is succeeding in any of them. Gitmo? Crysler/Fiat deal? Employment/Unemployment? Economic recovery in general? What make you believe he will succeed pushing Israel around?
22. AY_Lamb 17: You are a liberal?
Steve   (06.09.09)
I cannot speak to your liberalism. Barack Hussein Obama is no liberal in the traditional or historical sense. He is a condescending, paternalistic, anti-Semitic, Chicago thug. There is nothing liberal about this man. Who else, other than a thug would lecture the Jews that it is in our interests to establish a Muslim-terror state in our land?
23. No need to panic
Lillian Tobin ,   elizabeth new jersey   (06.12.09)
So far, Yoram Ettinger is right. Unbelievably, every Prime Minister so far has, more or less, withstood the various pressures of American presidents and Secretary of State, some actually hostile. But now, we have a different reality - America is in deep financial trouble and, as usual, the Jews are being blamed. There is a backlash and worrisome rise in anti-Semitism. Bernie Madoff did not help the situation. Well financed extreme Islamofascism is causing much trouble on college campuses and involving some administrators and professors. Unfortunately, we are losing too many young Jews to assimilation and ignorance of our Judaic heritage.
24. In an effort to conserve
AY_Lamb ,   USA   (06.14.09)
Words - There is an American euphemism you need to acquaint yourselves with - "Frenemy" - Barak Obama must adhere to the Israel constraint and isolation policies initiated by his predecessor GWB and really back to Nixon if you really examine the evidence. The OSS, the forerunners of the CIA opposed the establishment of the "Jewish State" in the "Palestine" why?? because they feared and irreparable schism with the very malleable Arab Muslim states and Governments but, if you exam this policy even closer you will see a very religious connection and the academic influence of christian theologians on right wing American bureaucrats and officials over the decades. In short it is the deity-cide allegation that has been so pervasive for the last 2009 years for crying out loud. These Republicans since Prescott Bush (hilter supporter) all the way to George Bush (in the present) have had a propensity for christian militarism "No different from Adolf Hitler" please get real – “perfidy” towards "God Killers" is no perfidy at all, these evangelicals represent the very antithesis to Judaism. Barak Obama cannot abandon decades of policy overnight, he will find himself in a classic Caesar and Brutus scenario if you get my drift??
