Obama is a great orator, but North Korea and Iran will need more than a good speech. Nor can reaching out to the Moslem world transform Fatah, Hamas Hizbolla, and Syria into peace loving democrats. The obstacle to peace is still the embrace to xenophobia and jihad in the Arab world.

It would be grand if he succeeded. Then perhaps some compromise of principles might have been worth it. His speech did address head-on issues that are important to Israel. However he made the glaring omission of the Jewish refugees, and painted Islam in a much rosier light than the reality. It is obvious why, but it is a dangerous line to follow. If he is wrong his stance will lend legitimacy to Muslim aggression while sweeping under the rug serious issues. It is a gamble, and it seems that we've been pushed in with the chips.

President Obama is clearly obsessed with the "two state" solution and "uprooting Jewish settlements". And do it all now. But, he does not seem to have a true handle of the complexity of the situation and the implications of these policies. Imposing or "pressing forward" with an idea, basically an unproven hypothesis, is very dangerous for us and could lead to some horrible consequences. What we have learned over the years here is that foreign meddling in this region, regardless of "good will" or concern for their interests, tends to work to the detriment of the Jews.

Even Israeli's don't get it. Sharon did not give up Gaza. It was not his to start with. He withdrew from Gaza knowing if there was a "big bang" i.e. Israel attacking neighbouring countries then those still in Gaza would be vulnerable. There were no unprovoked rocket attacks from Gaza. In fact since Hamas came to power there have been no suicide operations and most rocket attacks have unsanctioned by Hamas. The ratio of Palestinians killed to Israelis killed is staggering in that period i.e. 100 : 1. The seperation wall was built to remove a deterrent threat from Gaza. Israel is now able to kill without the fear of retaliation.

If Obama was really interested in peace rather than appeasing the Arabs, he would have read Netanyahu's book "A Durable Peace", and then he'd know what kind of peace would work in the Middle East.
